This paper is aiming at analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of PPP approach in teaching L2 grammar. PPP approach, referring to the method of Presentation, Practice and Production, is one of the traditional language teaching instructions in classroom. There are advantages and drawbacks using PPP to teach grammar. The present research aims to find out (1) the general vocabulary learning beliefs of Senior One high school students in Guang zhou; (2) the general vocabulary cognitive strategies adopted by Senior One high school students in Guangzhou; (3) the differences be tween successful English learners and unsuccessful English learners in adopting cognitive strategies in their English vocabulary learning. A cohort of 68 Senior One high school students participate in the research. The results of the investigation show that the notion that vocabu lary should be learnt in context and through using is shared by the majority, that the most frequently used vocabulary cognitive strategies are inferencing, note-taking, contextualization and resourcing, that there is no significant difference between the successful English learners and the unsuccessful English learners in using identical vocabulary cognitive strategies.  相似文献

0. Introduction   Advances in computer analysis of the English language have shown that lexical patterns are widespread in language use. Some researchers call them “lexical phrases“ (Nattinger and DeCarrico,1992) or “lexical chunks“ (Lewis, 1993); others use the term “multi-word chunks“ or just “chunks“of language. Whatever the terms are, they are characteristic of language use and language acquisition and present advantages for language teaching and learning. A specific application of task-based learning in teaching vocabulary to young learners and a complete task cycle using role play to present vocabulary in China’s private language school would be described in the study. The participants aged between 7 and 9 are thought to be starters according to their language competence in Common European Framework of Reference for language. The rationale for stages in the task cycle will be fully explored with reference to Piaget and Vygotsky’s theory in teaching young learners. The advantages of the adoption of TBL with young learners will be illustrated and some possible problems in implementing TBL in China, a representative country of Confucian-heritage culture would also be discussed in the paper. The study indicates that young learners in China are quite welcome this new approach in their English classes, but the targeted learners’ age and background information need to be taken into consideration when actually implement this approach.  相似文献

Over the years, much importance has been increasingly attached to the ability of using English, especially the mastery of communicative skills, by the overall public and society. Despite the importance placed on English learning, criticism never stops, accusing Chinese learners of‘high scores, low abilities’,‘deaf English’, and‘mute English’. One of the effective approaches acknowledged admittedly to solve these problems is to promote English study through watching American situation comedy, also known as sitcom, besides its prominent survival and success imperceptibly exert improvement on the learning of English as well. Based on the analysis of the present learning situation and the learning obstacles of Chinese learners, this paper tries to briefly elaborate how American sitcoms can stimulate and positively affect the learning of English, in terms of factors of cultural spread, the shift of aesthetic value, the choice from current fashion, and the evolvement of learning style in this cyber age.  相似文献

The role of motivation in language learning has been studied since the 1960s. It is indeed one of the most important areas of linguistics. This paper suggests strategies of motivating language learners and focuses on the role which motivation can play in language learning. The concept of motivation from different points of view is defined, a number of suggestions on how to motivate language learners are presented and the role of motivation based on various motivational theories are highlighted. With regard to the role of motivation in language learning, it is concluded that motivation plays an increasingly important role in many aspects, such as identifying with the target language society, achieving long-term and short-term goals, improving language learners‘ internal and external powers and exerting a group force. It also indicates that there should be more research areas to be examined and a long way is probably requlred to go in future theoretical and practical study.  相似文献

本文通过问卷调查和词汇测试成绩,运用定量分析的方法,研究了普通本科院校英语专业新生词汇学习策略的使用特点以及学习策略与词汇测试成绩之间的相关性。结果表明:学生不同程度地运用各种策略来学习英语词汇;大部分词汇学习策略与词汇测试成绩之间存在一定的相关性,自我评估、上下文、构词法、猜测、视觉编码、听觉编码、意义编码等为比较有效的策略;优生比差生更善于运用各种词汇学习策略。该项研究对于英语专业新生的词汇教学活动具有一定的启示作用。  相似文献

本研究旨在考察超媒体注释对中国学习者在阅读中习得英语词汇的作用。试验结果表明:就语言因素而言,中文注释模式与英文注释模式对词汇的附带习得有显著性差别,中文注释模式优于英语注释模式;就图片因素而言,有图模式对英语词汇附带习得的效果并无明显的优势;而语言因素和图片的交互作用对词汇的习得有明显优势,中文+图片注释模式对于词汇附带习得最为有效。  相似文献

以英语专业本科三年级学生为调查对象,采用调查问卷和词汇测试等方法,了解词汇学习策略的总体使用情况,比较优、差生在策略运用上的异同。定量分析结果表明:(1)英语专业学生较多运用认知策略学习词汇,而对元认知策略和社会/情感策略运用得较少;(2)优、差生在词汇学习策略的使用上存在较大差异,优生更多、更善于使用各种策略。  相似文献

When learners acquire new words in a second language (L2), their lexical representations and links are initially imprecise. As new, similar words are learned, these representations must become more specific to avoid errors. This study investigated whether contrasting similar words triggers this sharpening process and facilitates learning. In a multiple-choice learning task, 114 adults acquired orthographically and semantically similar L2 (pseudo)words by either contrasting them or not. In Experiment 1, participants contrasted the L2 words, and in Experiment 2 they contrasted words in their first language. Only contrasting orthographically similar L2 words facilitated their acquisition. We conclude that contrasting underspecified representations serves as a learning mechanism that guides attention to relevant lexical information. As such, it enables learners to build more specific representations and is conducive to learning. Possibilities for further research and potential implications for L2 vocabulary instruction are discussed.  相似文献

Previous research suggests that presenting redundant nonverbal semantic information in the form of gestures and/or pictures may aid word learning in first and foreign languages. But do nonverbal supports help all learners equally? We address this issue by examining the role of gestures and pictures as nonverbal supports for word learning in a novel (e.g. original/pretend) language in a sample of 62 preschoolers who differ in language abilities, language background, and gender. We tested children’s ability to learn novel words for familiar objects using a within-subjects design with three conditions: word-only; word + gesture; word + picture. Children were assessed on English translation, immediate comprehension and follow-up comprehension 1 week later. Overall performance on the tasks differed by characteristics of the learners. The importance of considering the interplay between learner characteristics and instructional strategies is discussed.  相似文献

文章探索了用微软office工具Excel实现外语词汇随机性测试的方法,提出的词汇随机测试模型包括测试词语抽取随机性和受试学生选择随机性两个维度。提出的周期性随机测试模型遵循人类大脑记忆原则,符合大脑的记忆遗忘规律,可以用作外语自主学习模式中学生形成性评价的一个重要工具。  相似文献
