The academic reference librarian needs to know what the college faculty expect from their library. These needs seem often to be idiosyncratic if they do not fit the librarian's conception of the generalized user, but these needs must be identified and met in order to serve the faculty appropriately. Librarians need to be as aware of information acquisition patterns as they are of information sources.  相似文献

Limitations on both time and human memory make it impossible for the reference librarian or staff member to become aware of even a fraction of all the reference sources that have been published. There is, however, a small number of basic, fundamental or "key" sources that are widely used or widely recommended. In all likelihood these sources will answer a high proportion of all the questions that may appropriately be answered by published reference materials. This paper explores a number of ways that these "key" reference sources may be identified. The author concludes that a knowledge of the types or categories of reference materials that exist and what each type will do best, along with a knowledge of a corpus of basic, fundemental or "key" reference titles, will contribute to a firm foundation for effective and efficient reference service.  相似文献

POINTER is a microcomputer program that simulates the advice of a government documents librarian by suggesting the use of particular reference books. Using Government Publications is a two volume work which identifies search strategies and sources of information for handling many specific topics and types of questions associated with federal documents. A comparison of these two reference aids reveals advantages and disadvantages of each as well as the difficulty of developing a conceptual framework for federal document research.  相似文献

Abstract

Teaching faculty are a key resource for reference librarians. This paper includes a discussion of major forces affecting reference service as well as suggestions on ways for librarians to become better acquainted with teaching faculty. One benefit of making these connections is that when faculty know and have confidence in librarians, they are more likely to urge their students to get help at the desk, to schedule course-related instruction sessions, and to let librarians know if they have a particularly difficult or complex assignment. Another benefit is that such connections often lead to increased opportunities, from participation in campus-wide initiatives to the development of collaborative projects and other scholarly work. As a librarian relatively new to the profession, I know that such connections with teaching faculty have enriched my own career.  相似文献

Economic statistics collected, analyzed, and distributed by the federal government are valuable for answering economic questions asked by all different types of library users; scholars, students, analysts, and laypeople. Not only must the reference librarian depend upon the expertise of the patron, but also be aware of the factors affecting the data, have a general idea of the interdependency of agencies. and when necessary, a willingness to to alternative sources. The difficulties of finding retrospective economic data should not dissuade the librarian or patron from using federal statistics.  相似文献

Continuing education for the reference librarian, bibliographer and/or faculty member in an ARL library derives from every facet of the job. Certain functions, such as that of bibliographer, require formal orientation to the political climate of the teaching faculty. Other activities such as reference, online searching, and bibliographic instruction may involve prior experience but become more fully developed through the job itself. The role of faculty member necessitates publishing for promotion and tenure, which may include assistance from colleagues in critiquing papers intended for publication. Beyond diverse and demanding job requirements, however, the librarian needs intellectual and aesthetic development. A model used in the medical profession could serve librarianship well.  相似文献

Librarians are playing numerous roles within problem-based learning curricula. While many of these roles are described in the literature, there is no framework to describe and organize these roles. This paper proposes such a framework. It arranges librarian roles according to level of curricular involvement and includes the following levels: assistance at the reference desk, instruction at the reference desk, course-related instruction, resource management and utilization, consultation with faculty and students, and group facilitation.  相似文献

In March 2000, all 188 University of Southern Colorado (USC) nonlibrary faculty members were surveyed to determine their needs and opinions regarding library research instruction. Forty-four (23.40%) of the faculty responded to questions concerning their past experiences with library research instruction, the frequency with which they use various library and Internet resources, the types of library research instruction they currently use with their students, and their level of support for proposed new programs. Results showed an overwhelming interest on the part of respondents for an online library research skills tutorial. The survey also revealed the need for professional development opportunities for faculty. A higher proportion of respondents with 10 years or less of teaching experience than those with more than 10 years of experience indicated they had received formal library instruction from a librarian. However, no direct correlation could be shown between years of teaching experience and respondents' perceived value of library research instruction. Nor did a correlation exist to show that respondents with fewer years of teaching experience were more likely to ask a librarian to provide formal library instruction to their students. In fact, respondents with more than 20 years of teaching experience provided most types of library instruction more often than less experienced respondents. Overall, USC faculty rated their students' abilities to conduct library research very low. However, they had slightly more confidence in their students' abilities to find, evaluate, and use information they found on the Internet over information from traditional print sources.  相似文献

A significant problem in reference service at the present time is the shortage of reference librarians. The work of answering reference queries places great demands on such professionals. Success in answering reference questions is mainly based on the level of the librarian's knowledge and experience. The traditional method of answering queries emphasizes experience and mental "detective work" based on sources familiar to the librarian from previous searches. This is extremely difficult for the novice librarian, who usual1 lacks a history of exposure to the literature upon which to draw. The following paper presents a method for addressing queries by means of secondary reference books, referred to as the SRB method. It describes the process of answering queries explains the nature of SRBs, and introduces a method an techn~que for answering queries by consulting SRBs.  相似文献

Summary

The reference librarian in the setting of a Holocaust library serves several unique functions. Together with survivors and their families the librarian assists in reaching closure in their search for information about relatives who perished in the Holocaust. The reference librarian also serves as facilitator for future generations in learning about the Holocaust and coming to terms with the past. The paper also describes the tools and sources that enable these processes to be accomplished.  相似文献

Faculty perceptions of librarians' contributions to students' research skills has been linked to frequency of librarian contact in the extant literature. Yet, to date, no studies have tested this hypothesis via a large-scale nationally representative data set. In addition, the hypothesis that faculty perceptions of librarians might also be a function of faculty course goals has yet to be tested. This current study analyzed the most recent Ithaka S + R US Faculty Survey responses to evaluate the relationship between librarian contact, course goals, and faculty perceptions of librarians' contributions. The analyses support the conclusion that perceived frequency of librarian interaction and faculty course goals are both associated with faculty perceptions of librarians' contributions to students' research skill development. Furthermore, this study unveiled a moderating effect between perceived frequency of librarian contact and faculty course goals; that is, one is contingent on the other.  相似文献

Librarians have provided reference and research support for faculty to varying degrees for many years, and librarian support is needed more than ever today with the rapidly evolving nature of library resources and online information. Learning about faculty research needs and determining ways to support their research is an ongoing challenge facing librarians. This article describes a library program that uses academic department administrative personnel to connect with faculty researchers and helps clarify the roles that librarians, faculty, and administrative personnel play in the research process.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article explores best practices for supporting digital humanities (DH) activity and pedagogy in the undergraduate classroom on campuses without a DH center in the library. By examining specific aspects of librarians' curricular engagements, with a particular focus on reference and instructional activity, we discuss how reenvisioning these services aids in the development of effective support for both faculty and students engaged in DH. An included case study illustrates how redefining “traditional” librarian liaison roles and shifting expectations of faculty from one-shot instruction sessions to embedded librarianship models can be put into practice in undergraduate classrooms with a DH focus. The article concludes with a discussion of the librarian as digital humanist and how this role can positively impact undergraduate curricula.  相似文献

Prologue:
The reference librarian serves as the primary frontline professional responsible for aiding, either directly or indirectly, the library's users in their search for information. As such the reference librarian deserves our praise and commendation but such praise and commendation is seldom given in print nowadays as we tend, instead, to look at the downside of reference services be it burnout or the low percentage of reference questions that are answered correctly. Here, then, is an ode, although not in true poetic form, to the reference librarian that seeks to redress the balance by speaking of the noble feelings that we should all have for the essential professionals who serve Our Profession so well.  相似文献
