The effects of the 2010–2015 economic recession on the Greek publishing market have been dramatic, by all means, affecting its structure, operation, quantity and quality features. What is interesting to investigate, thereof, is the response of the publishing environment to the economic downturn in the form of resilience, adaptation, innovation and change within the industry. While the ‘crisis’ has had more severe consequences for the firms at the top, connected often (but not always) to media groups, the experienced, specialized small to medium publishers and booksellers proved to be more resilient, sustaining a vibrant and diversified production within a fewer number of books published. New book titles were reduced by 35% between 2008 and 2012, with signs of further containment following to that. At the same time, a number of small, independent booksellers have sprung up, out of the need to support the distinct quality features of literary production, based on the ‘personal quality’ service model. An approximate 8% of the Greeks can be ranked among the ‘medium to systematic’ readers (i.e. reading over 10 books a year); they are the ones to support the volume and diversity of book title production, including some of the bestsellers, while the outbreak of the crisis concurred with a positive development towards the weaker strand of the readership. The international interest in the economic circumstances met in Greece has helped, to some extent, the export of rights of literary works either dealing with the individuals affected, or analyzing the reasons of the default. At the same time, digital innovation may prove to be a sign of a changing book publishing industry, striving to become international.  相似文献

Itinerant booksellers play very significant but less noticeable role in the book trade in Ghana and many developing economies. They are the mobile booksellers who carry their collections to the doorsteps of their consumers. This paper highlights the contributions of itinerant booksellers to book distribution in Ghana. The paper makes a case for and against itinerant bookselling in Ghana. First, the paper raises issues with the quality and content of some of the reading materials peddled by the itinerant booksellers and discusses their implications for copyright and book development. The paper then argues that in spite of their shortcomings, itinerant booksellers have the potential to assist in finding a lasting solution to the book distribution problems of the country, and, need to be encouraged and assisted by book industry players such as the Ghana Development Council, Ghana Book Publishers Association, and the Ghana Booksellers Association to contribute meaningfully to Ghana??s book business.  相似文献

The book market is one of the last media markets affected by digitization, so the question is whether this market follows the same patterns as other media industries before. Our study analyses if these digitization processes lead to a stronger market orientation thus commercialization of a market that traditionally has been understood as a market of cultural goods. We conduct a market analysis and a survey among authors, publishers and booksellers in Germany and Switzerland to answer this question. Our findings support the notion of an increased market orientation among publishers and booksellers. However, the tendencies towards commercialization cannot be attributed to digitization alone but might happen even without it.  相似文献

Between 1984 and 1989, the U.S. book industry drowned in a recorded $7.88 billion of returns: 23.87 percent of all books published during those years were returned to publishers by wholesalers and booksellers for full credit. This massive return of books undermined the stability of the book industry, causing many publishers to question the efficacy of a system that failed to operate successfully during a period of exceptionally stable business conditions, free from high rates of interest and inflation, recession, or a war. In this study the author addresses the book return phenomenon by: (1) analyzing statistics about the U.S. book industry and its twelve key market segments; (2) evaluating possible causes of the increase in returns; and (3) proposing some suggestions to reduce returns. Albert N. Greco also serves on the board of directors of the Book Industry Study Group, publisher ofBook Industry Trends, 1991.  相似文献

World Book Night
World Book Night US has been launched following the successful World Book Night in the UK in March of 2011. Both countries will now hold the annual event on April 23, 2012, and the hopes are that it will be taken up by other countries as well. Its main goal is to foster literacy by enlisting volunteers to go into the community in search of non- or light readers, with free, not-for-resale special paperback editions of 25–30 different titles. A million books in all. As part of the effort, all the attendant publicity is intended to shine a light on the value of reading in general. In both countries, every book constituency has come together in support of the campaign: publishers, authors, booksellers, librarians and others. Both the UK and US organizations are non-profit charities, with funding from publishers, booksellers and foundations; very corporate and individual donations are being sought. Each organization has an executive director, a board of directors or trustees, and then all-volunteer advisory, marketing, website and publicity groups. The million book production is coordinated by the director and a production committee, and a distributor gets the books to bookstore or library drop points, accomplishing the third goal, which is a reminder of the value of bookstores and libraries in the community and culture.  相似文献

The former Director of the Frankfurt Book Fair presents a concise history of what today is the largest international book fair including the key publishers, booksellers and authors who are part of the amazing global event. The interesting initial development and challenges of post World War II and related relocated German publishers are described. The initial efforts as a national book fair from 1949 to the present international event are traced. The turmoil and confrontation of political groups during the 1968 and subsequent years with actions taken was a difficult period for the fair but it survived to grow into a global event.  相似文献

Publishing has traditionally been an introspective industry, and while this is gradually changing, there is a need for publishers to adopt a more market-led approach. This requires the development of branding strategies to increase levels of recognition and consumer loyalty among the book buying public. The nature of the book as a product presents difficulties in applying branding theory to the industry and this study provides an insight into the issues involved in branding the imprint and the author and examines how some trade publishers are addressing these issues. The study also examines the public perception of brands within the trade sector and examines how much impact publishers’ brands have made with the consumer.  相似文献

While bookstores play the vital role in book distribution, little attention has been paid to concentration and conglomerate ownership in the retail book trade. In 1958, one-store book firms accounted for nearly 80 percent of book sales; by 1982 that figure had fallen to 26 percent even though single-store retailers continue to account for a majority of all bookstore outlets. Today the chains control at least 54 percent of bookstore sales. Buoyed by discriminatory discounts and publisher-subsidized advertising campaigns, the chains’ dramatic growth seems likely to continue despite the fact that they are less profitable than independent booksellers. The chains’ marketing orientation fits well with changes in the broader publishing industry, as publishers seek to rationalize operations in order to improve the bottom line. As books become just another commodity, sold through increasingly centralized and monopolized channels, access for alternative and minority voices is being for-closed.  相似文献

A panel discussion was held at the University of Minnesota to explore how librarians, publishers, and booksellers advance access to women's literature. Using the Twin Cities area of Minnesota as a model, the program brought together five professionals representing university and public libraries and socially conscious publishing and bookselling. The group addressed issues associated with the production, selection, and access to women's literature. Three conditions came to light, revealing the complexities of each function, the impact of contemporary trends, and the necessity of cooperation among publishers, booksellers, and librarians.  相似文献

Book as a medium of expression has experienced change from the days of Gutenberg, but never has it been so influenced by the new technologies which have spared no other sector. The general infrastructural development in Nigeria in relation to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is bedeviled by issues ranging from Government’s ineptitude to handling the energy sector and consequent costs of running businesses in Nigeria. Coupled with these, are high government taxes, high cost of equipments and obvious absence of general maintenance culture. Greatly affected are the services of writers, publishers, booksellers and libraries. The problems are not insurmountable, while governments are called upon to play their roles, the paper laid more emphasis on what key players in the industry should know and do in order to keep afloat in the future. The paper examines some of the recent technological developments as it relates to the industry. Of importance is the pace by which bandwidths are getting bigger and cheaper; Smartphones are becoming common place; and Social Media is becoming very popular and accessible by more elites. Again, individuals are becoming more and more equipped with free tools to self-publish. Recommendations are laid out in the paper on what must be done to remain relevant in this season of ICT revolution. The impact is already felt in developed countries. While in Nigeria, key players in the industry must learn to embrace ICT in developing the book industry.  相似文献

The development of the publishing industry for children and young adults is very recent in Morocco. Indeed it was in the 1980s that people became aware of its importance for future generations. The first national publications were mainly in Arabic language, stories were very short, books were of paperback format and the subjects were very much dominated by moral, social and religious didacticism. In the late 1990s, publishers started being more and more concerned with the appearance of the book (size, cover, illustrations, topic, etc.) and there are nowadays two publishers specialized only in children’s books—Yanbow al Kitab and Yomad—who produce books that respond to international norms. They are both very active in promoting reading and especially allowing children from disadvantaged social backgrounds to have access to books, price being a main constraint for those children. But there is still a lack of publishers specialized in children’s books in Morocco (two publishers for the whole country), not enough pleasant reading spaces and no real government policy to allow mass access by making books cheaper.  相似文献

The Book Culture Club at Hong Kong Baptist University goes beyond the traditional book talk format. Its vision is to nurture a culture that values reading, writing, and publishing books through a synergistic approach among the library, authors, potential authors, and publishers. Since its inauguration in early 2009, the club has offered eighteen programs and has attracted more than 1,200 attendees by March 2013. In this article, the author will describe how the Book Culture Club was formed, present a series of activities conducted, describe how events are prepared and implemented, discuss successful outcomes and offer reflections thereon, and demonstrate how good outreach initiatives for connecting many various parties can produce a long-lasting impact in an academic setting.  相似文献
