Inspired by the "Year of the Trustee" celebration, the article reviews educational opportunities afforded trusteei during the last decade or so in one state, Alabama, and offers suggestions for those planning educational activities at the local, state, or regional level. Conferences and workshops conducted for Alabama trustees by the state library agency (APLS) during the 1980s am discussed briefly, results of a survey of Alabama trustee's continuing education preferences am reported, and programs presented for trustees by the Alabama Library Association and the Southeastern Library Association during this period am listed as suggestions for program planners. After offering specific advice for those planning continuing education workshops, the article reports on workshops, videotapes, and speakers' kits available from ALTA, the American Library Trustee Association.  相似文献

We read and hear a good deal these days about the proper role of federal agencies, Congress, and broadcasters themselves in properly controlling quantity and quality of television advertising in the U.S. There seems to be a fair amount of criticism expressed and implied by government officials, the general public, broadcasters, agencies and advertisers on the whole question of advertising regulation—suggesting most of these people are dissatisfied to some degree much of the time. An interesting comparative situation is found in Britain where the Independent Broadcasting Authority has followed a unique approach to these problems for a number of years—and apparently pleases most participants and the TV audience. In the following discussion, Mrs. Marting describes the IBA approach and deals with its possible applicability here. The author is completing the Ph.D. at Ohio State University after earlier earning a journalism MA at Alabama, and spending a number of years in public relations and advertising.  相似文献

The article is a memoir of the author's career, which she spent primarily at the University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign. As Slavic Bibliographer there, she organized the Slavic Reading Room in the Slavic and East European Library and was the first head of the Slavic Reference Service. She reinvigorated the American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies (ABSEES). She was a founding member and/or was very active in virtually all of the national and international Slavic librarians' organizations. In addition, she served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS). Beyond just Slavic librarianship she established the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs at the University of Illinois and served as its founding director. She was also a member of George Soros's Network Library Program Board, part of his Open Society initiative.  相似文献

In this review of revolutionary changes in methods and materials used to teach reading, Bernice Cullinan describes research that supports literature-based programs and reports on a survey of statewide reading initiatives. She also describes the activities of groups that help teachers and librarians implement literature-based programs. She has been president of the International Reading Association, is a member of the Reading Hall of Fame and received the Arbuthnot Award for Outstanding Teacher of Children’s Literature. Elizabeth L. Lorbeer, Associate Director for Content Management, and Nicole Mitchell, Reference Librarian, both of the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham, delivered a presentation at the Mid-South eResource Symposium, hosted by Mississippi State University Libraries, August 11, 2011. Lorbeer and Mitchell described how a team at Lister Hill Library developed a plan that involved Pay-Per-View (PPV) article acquisitions to reduce journal spending. Emergency Management Agencies (EMAs) in the U.S. operate at federal, state, and local levels, each with a common purpose “to prepare for, prevent, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of incidents” (Homeland Security, 2008). As Homeland Security (2008) explains, local EMAs (LEMAs) lay the groundwork for prevention and other activities, coordinating with nearby LEMAs and local entities, including private and non-governmental organizations. LEMAs have been studied little; most research on online LEMAs and State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) has been limited to website content, providing an incomplete picture of how they provide online service to the public. Bertot & Jager argue that functionality, usability, and accessibility are critical elements in evaluating e-government, noting that if users cannot get to or find the content, the content becomes irrelevant. This study contributes to addressing this gap by evaluating Alabama LEMA websites, based on a combination of content rubrics used in prior EMA studies and usability heuristics, factors that can affect user trust, and thus a site's usefulness. It also looks at how Alabama LEMAs are using social networking on their websites.  相似文献

One reason for the continuing popularity of basal reading programs is that they help to reduce the countless, decisions teachers must make every day. They do not, however, eliminate teachers' decision making. Using a basal series selectively and critically requires teachers to make daily choices and frequently to overrule the basal authors' suggestions. Considering the importance of the decisions to be made with respect to basals, preservice and inservice education should provide specific guidance in evaluating and using these instructional materials, at the same time that teachers are strengthening the general knowledge base that supports prudent decision making. Margaret Early, chair of the Department of Instruction and Curriculum in the College of Education at the University of Florida and past president of the National Council of Teachers of English, has served on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association. She is the senior author of a basal reading program published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich.  相似文献

A library's Web site is well recognized as the gateway to the library for the vast majority of users. Choosing the most user-friendly Web architecture to reflect the many services libraries offer is a complex process, and librarians are still experimenting to find what works best for their users. As part of a redesign of the Oregon State University Libraries’ Web site, entry points for specific user groups were created. One of these user groups was graduate students. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways other academic libraries design their Web sites for particular user groups, specifically graduate students, in order to determine how the Oregon State University Libraries Web site compared to peer institutions. This study analyzed 112 Association of Research Libraries’ Web sites and 26 Oregon academic libraries’ Web sites to determine the availability of resources and services specifically promoted to graduate students. Since graduate students may view the library Web site through the lens of new student, researcher, or instructor, Web sites were also examined to see if sites were created with any or all of these roles in mind. Nearly a quarter of Association of Research Libraries' Web sites that were examined contained a link on the homepage for graduate students, and another 20 percent provided graduate-student information at a lower level in their site hierarchy. A majority of sites had events, subject guides, or course guides for graduate students. Information for graduate students was typically framed in the context of graduate students as researchers. Ideas and examples are given for ways to improve Web site design to better serve this user group. In order to provide improved services to these students, future studies will explore what graduate students need from academic libraries and the ways these students conduct themselves in their various roles of researchers, instructors, and new students.  相似文献

A full bibliography on one of the most active areas of broadcasting —CATV—is long overdue. Don Le Duc originally prepared this compilation while working on his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin. It is based on an extensive clipping file collected by Kenneth Lichty of India, California, and by the author's major professor, Lawrence W. Lichty of the University of Wisconsin. Support for completing the collection came, in part, through a fellowship awarded by the Department of Communication Arts and a travel grant from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Le Duc is a member of the State of Wisconsin and United States Supreme Court Bars, and is on the publications committee of the Federal Communications Bar Association and the communications committee of the American Bar Association. Formerly on the faculty of the University of Maryland, he will be assistant professor in the Department of Speech at the Ohio State University starting this fall.  相似文献

During the past six years the Journal of Broadcasting has brought to its readers bibliographies on specific topics (audience measurement techniques, content analysis, etc.) and from publications devoted to a specific field (law, economics, journalism, etc.). The bibliography published below belongs to this second category. Education on the Air, the yearbook of the Institute for Education by Radio‐Television, is a continuous record of the deliberations of a convention devoted to exploring the informative and cultural uses of broadcasting. Under the direction of I. Keith Tyler, the IERT was for many years the only major association devoted exclusively to this subject area, and many of the present organizations now in the field are “spin‐offs” from these annual meetings hosted by the Ohio State University. Within the framework of the IERT, the subject of broadcast journalism has not been neglected. Over a period of almost 30 years, this use of radio for informing the public of the events of the day was discussed in various IERT sessions.

This bibliography was prepared to assist researchers and students interested in the growth and development of broadcast journalism as reflected in the IERT annual meetings. Dr. Heath is professor of journalism at Oklahoma State University, and is former chairman of the Council on Radio‐Television Journalism of the Association for Education in Journalism. Mr. Wolfson is working toward his doctorate at Michigan State University. They collaborated on this bibliography while at Iowa State University.  相似文献

Between 1880 and 1950, the role of women as authors of elementary readers flowered and faded. From 1880 to 1915, female authorship dominated. Over the next fifteen years female authorship withstood the challenge of the scientific movement in education. Women’s role as solo authors declined, however, during the Depression, World War II and the postwar years. These changes are explained by the deteriorating environment for female professionalism, changes in the concept of reading expertise, the expanded role of publishers in textbook development, and the differences between men and women in opportunities for graduate study. E. Jennifer is Monaghan a professor in the Department of Educational Services, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. She is the founder of the History of Reading Special Interest Group of the International Reading Association and author ofA Common Heritage: Noah Webster’s Blue-Back Speller.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This essay reports on the latest efforts to assess the collections of materials relating to the Russian Revolution held in the Hoover Institution and the New York Public Library (NYPL). The first section reviews the presentations made by Bertrand Patenaude, Michael Herrick, and Robert Davis during the roundtable “Collecting the Revolution” at the annual meeting of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies in November 2017. The second presents additional information documenting the development of NYPL’s and Hoover’s collections located in The Wisconsin State Historical Society Archive and the Archive of the Russian State Library.  相似文献

本文旨在弄清南京国民政府时期国家档案馆运动的起源、过程及其意义。通过梳理原始档案及相关史料后发现,在中华图书馆协会、行政院档案整理处、国史馆筹备委员会等为代表性的学术与行政机构的推动下,《呈请政府组织中央档案局案》(1929年1月)、《重设国史馆案》(1934年1月)、《建立档案总库及筹设国史馆案》(1939年1月)等议案先后提出,傅振伦主笔的《全国档案馆组织条例草案》与毛坤撰写的《国家档案馆规程》则分别代表了官方与民间对国家档案馆制度设计的努力。尽管当时的档案界从实践与制度设计两个层面对国家档案馆建设作出了持久的努力,却未能实现创建国家档案馆的终极目标,但这一运动为新中国的国家档案馆建设工作留下了宝贵的实践经验与思想遗产。  相似文献

Information literacy involves the location and access of information through retrieval systems, and many information retrieval systems are designed with specific capabilities to support these very skills. In some cases, system enhancements go beyond simple support and alleviate some of the searcher's responsibilities by performing certain tasks for them. By comparing information retrieval functions to the Association of College and Research Libraries' information literacy standards, this article investigates the extent of support that these enhanced systems can offer, and gives librarians greater insight into how these design enhancements could have an impact on information literacy instruction.  相似文献

Certainly one key to a licensee's response to community needs is the perception by top station executives of their station's role in the community. The following article is an adaptation of some research findings of a dissertation conducted under the supervision of Professor Walter B. Emery at Ohio State University in 1971. The author, now an assistant professor in the department of speech and dramatic art at the University of Iowa, received a research grant from the National Association of Broadcasters to help conduct the study.  相似文献
