Retrospective perceptions and views of engineering students about physics and engineering practicals

Hands-on practical work in physics and engineering has a long and well-established tradition in Australian universities. Recently, however, the question of whether hands-on physics and engineering practicals are useful for engineering students and whether they could be deleted or whether these could be replaced with computer simulations has been raised, mainly due to cost-cutting exercises. In order to ascertain the usefulness of hands-on engineering practicals and first year practical physics classes to their engineering degree, a retrospective survey was carried out with third year engineering students. The general picture that emerges from the survey indicates that the majority of the students found hands-on physics and engineering practicals preferable to simulations on a computer and that practical work is useful not only for linking theory to practicals but also for gaining technical skills. 相似文献

The objective of this paper is to describe a teaching strategy for enhancement of physics learning among students in their first year of industrial engineering by using a conception of learning according with the scientific methodology. We describe very concisely the theoretical basis of our proposal, which takes into account the recent contribution of research into physics and engineering education. Four classes of first years were taught by the proposed strategy and during 4 years all students of each class (about 952 students in total) were tested on their understanding of the physics programme. The results of the innovation support the fact that there has been a remarkable improvement in teaching effectiveness. 相似文献

The case study described in this paper investigates the relationship among some pre-instructional knowledge, the learning gain and the final physics performance of computing engineering students in the introductory physics course. The results of the entrance engineering test (EET) have been used as a measurement of reading comprehension, logic and mathematics skills and basic physics knowledge of a sample of 47 Computing Engineering freshmen at the University of Palermo (Italy). These data give a significant picture of the initial knowledge status of a student choosing engineering studies. The students' physics learning gain has been calculated using a standardized tool in mechanics: the force concept inventory (FCI). The analysis shows that mathematical and physical background contribute to achieve a good final preparation in physics courses of engineering faculties; however the students' learning gain in physics is independent of students' initial level of mathematics skills and physics knowledge. Initial logic skills and reading comprehension abilities are not significant factors for the learning physics gain and the performance on physics courses. 相似文献

Electrical engineering students were interviewed in order to reveal their understanding of important physics concepts needed for a semiconductor physics course. In particular, the concepts of diffusion, holes and doping were studied. We found that a hierarchy of understanding existed for all these concepts, where different students had grasped the concepts to different levels. Particular student conceptions are given. We think it is important for teachers in both the physics and the semiconductor physics courses to know about the existing student conceptions, in order to meet them in the education. 相似文献
