Abstract There is a difference between recognising what kind of sum is needed to solve a mathematical problem on the one hand and doing the sum correctly on the other. There are good grounds for pursuing this distinction. One is that the easy availability of calculators makes the second element a great deal easier for children who know how to use them. Another is that current work on children's cognitive development shows that there are many problems which children have the skill to solve but nevertheless fail to solve because they do not always realise when the skill is needed. I report a pilot study which demonstrates the same sort of thing with subtraction and which deals with the conditions which might encourage children to use the mathematical skills that they do have more effectively. 相似文献

In this chapter, conclusions are drawn and implications are suggested. Of the non-cognitive variables included in the study, the students’ Priorities were the most important in predicting GPA. In general, non-cognitive variables provided important information on admissions. Weighting adjustments are used in some studies to compensate for biased estimators produced by survey nonresponse. Using data
from the 2004 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and the NSSE poststratification weighting algorithm, this study
found that weighting adjustments were needed for some, but not all institutions. Unfortunately, no simple criterion for determining
when weighting adjustments were needed could be identified. In addition, weighting adjustments reduced the precision of estimators
for a majority of the institutions. Based on these findings, institutions and researchers concerned about compensating for
nonresponse would be well advised to carefully evaluate the need for, and consequences of, weighting before employing weighting

This study examined relations between reactivity (i.e., peak response) and regulation (i.e., response dampening) in 6-month-old infants' cortisol and behavioral responses to inoculation (N = 62). Data showed that reactivity and regulation were unrelated for both cortisol and behavior. The independence of reactivity and regulation suggests that measures of both are needed to characterize infant cortisol or behavioral response to stress more completely. For both reactivity and regulation, cortisol and behavior were unrelated, suggesting that measures of both are needed to assess infant stress more adequately. There was considerable variation in the timing of the peak cortisol response, suggesting that obtaining only a single poststressor cortisol sample does not provide a sensitive measure of cortisol reactivity. 相似文献

Science is undergoing a crisis that has been referred to, since the early 21st century, as a crisis of confidence and a crisis of replication. This article reviews questions pertaining to the replication crisis; questions addressing the quality and credibility of the sciences; specifically, questions linked to what are known as false positives, null results, and questionable research practices (p-hacking, harking, cherry-picking). As an outcome of our review and analysis, a set of recommendations to strengthen the elaboration of reliable and valid research studies is provided. Changes are needed in order to foment meta-research, open science practices and replication studies; notably, changes are needed in the instruction of research methods; in the use and interpretation of statistical data, as well as in research culture in general. We conclude that the replication crisis presents an opportunity to improve research practices and the quality of scientific production in all fields of research, including research in education. 相似文献
