对Internet上60个国外学术信息主题网关的概况进行调查,从主题覆盖、资源类型、分类和组织、浏览和检索、网页设计等方面对其主要特点进行分析,归纳国外学术信息主题网关的主要特点,认为国外学术信息主题网关涉及学科全面,分类和著录规范,强调资源的选择性,网页设计简洁明了,整体制作标准规范,值得我国同行予以借鉴。  相似文献

SUMMARY

There is a proliferation of Internet sites covering environmental themes. Many of these sites provide reference information in varying degrees. This article highlights environmental Web sites that provide a wide range of pertinent reference sources to a diverse audience. More than 50 highly selective Web sites are included in this paper. Some of these Web sites provide access to library catalogs, full-text articles, and other online resources. 网络社区收藏的资源往往倾向于满足日常信息需要,涉及的主题范围比较专指,而传统的图书馆分类主题词表则倾向于学术性和综合性,不适于网络社区用户的需要,因此需要建立适于这些特定用户群的分类主题词表。本文作者曾经参与了一些数字化图书馆的项目,设计开发过一此专门用于这些目的的小型核心词表。这篇文章介绍了作者们在开发过程中遇到的一些问题以及解决这些问题的方法和策略。小型“核心”主题测表可以定义为为网络社区资源专用的主题分类表。通过对元数据记录中的主题词频统计分析,作者确定哪些是核心词,然后再将这些核心词分成网络、图书馆、机构组织和设施、图书馆类型、组织名称和服务、地名、一般主题词、和参考工具等8个大类。在这8个大类下再进一步细分到二级类目。本文展示了三个图书馆的实例,它们主要是为公共图书馆的用户设计的。通过解释他们在这三个项目中的做法,作者讨论了在开发过程中的技术和成本以及在维护方面的问题,并且比较了一些类似的词表。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Saint Leo University faculty provide instruction at SCE sites located on eight community college campuses and three military bases in the Florida region. This article will examine ways in which the Distance Learning/Reference (DL/Ref) librarian facilitates off-campus student access to both the university library's online and print resources and to library resources at nearby supporting, or “proximal,” libraries for students who are too far from the University Campus to use anything except the Ask-a-Librarian, 1–800 reference, and Interlibrary Loan services. These students must rely on proximal libraries, which include large public library systems, library consortia, community college libraries, and military base libraries, for access to print resources as well as Internet access to the university's online content. Providing library access services for such a large, disparate group requires the additional combined efforts of administrators, other faculty librarians, and supporting libraries.  相似文献

Quality online maps and mapping resources, while indispensable to library users, can be challenging to locate. The range of available map types continues to expand and includes road maps, historical collections, political and physical atlases as well as maps and images of the moon and certain planets. Interactive mapping sites continue to grow and provide unique opportunities for users to interact with socioeconomic, historic, and physical data while creating unique and personalized maps. ABSTRACT

Digital collections of full-text e-books are proliferating on the Web and provide a wealth of open content for students. To examine whether academic libraries are providing a digital gateway to these resources, ten e-book titles from open digital collections were searched in the online catalogs and Web pages of ten academic libraries serving distance learners. Only three of the digital collection e-books were available from any of the library catalogs, and none were found on library Web pages. Availability of the ten e-book titles through Google and other digital discovery tools also had mixed results. Continued projects for improved delivery of open online content are necessary. In order to fulfill their role as digital gateways for their academic communities, libraries must pursue metadata standards to support cross-searching, collaborative projects, and development of e-resource search software, which integrates with the library catalog.  相似文献

This study reports the results of a survey conducted at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to determine the extent to which Internet users are aware and make use of the Internet resources and services. The study examines the information searching behavior of Internet users. A questionnaire and follow-up interviews with the postgraduate students, research scholars and academic staff were conducted to collect data. A total of 489 questionnaires were distributed to the selected sample of eight faculties; 405 valid samples were collected. The data were analyzed according to the background of Internet users, Internet information searching behavior, use of Internet resources and services, quality of Internet information, problems of the Internet access and need for Internet literacy. The study found that the majority of respondents had a 5 year history of Internet access. The academic staff spent more time on the Internet than the students and research scholars. Although Internet search engines were the preferred information searching tool, other methods such as databases, gateways and World Wide Web (WWW) were also used. Online journals and databases were the preferred information sources among the Internet users. Respondents chose e-mail, WWW and search engines as important Internet services. About 60% of respondents believed that the good quality of information on the Internet made it a useful tool for education and research. Slow speed, lack of training and information overload were indicated as some of the factors affecting Internet usage. Further, recommendations are made to improve the use of Internet, including a well-planned Internet literacy program and preparation of subject gateways.  相似文献

Course-related library Web pages can be designed to introduce students to an academic library Web site and provide access to information relevant to specific courses. These pages are most often developed to support a library instruction session. The author's course-related pages are designed on a template that includes the main features of the library Web site (e.g., links to the online catalog, reference information, and interlibrary loan request forms), a list of pertinent online indexes and databases, links to electronic journals, and recommended Web sites. Technical and organizational issues related to creating and maintaining such pages are discussed, as are outreach efforts and faculty/student response to incorporating this type of Web page into library instruction. ABSTRACT

This study used a quantitative survey to investigate the knowledge and use of online databases and the library's online public access catalog by final-year business associate degree students in five selected Jamaican community colleges. The study sought to determine students’ knowledge of electronic library resources, their value for electronic and print resources, the purposes for which students use electronic library resources, the influences on student use of electronic library resources, and the effects of training and instruction. Results from the study indicated that students are increasingly using Internet search engines for research purposes rather than online databases. Results also indicated that electronic library resources such as the OPAC are being underutilized by community college students. It was evident that proper instructional guidance is needed and welcomed by students. The findings of the study are critical to the implementation of policies and procedures geared toward sensitizing school administrators, library professionals, and other stakeholders to the benefits of increasing students’ knowledge and use of electronic library resources. Data will aid administrators in strategic planning and investments pertaining to these resources, and provide recommendations to improve knowledge and use of these resources within libraries. The research illustrates the special needs of community college students in Jamaica, particularly relating to needed instructional programs, in an effort to impart knowledge and promote the use of electronic library resources in these colleges.  相似文献

Abstract

Governmental, non-profit, and commercial organizations are putting a variety of materials online which provide access to information previously published in print, or on stand-alone fee-based databases. Although it is still difficult to locate information efficiently on the Internet, access to relevant materials has been improved by subject-organized online indexes of resources. These indexes take some of the chaos out of locating relevant materials. Rapid growth in online in electronic publishing combined with access to resources via organized indexes to online information make the Internet useful to reference librarians and educators. Summary

The objective of this article is to examine some of the valuable philosophical resources available on the Internet, especially for librarians who need to determine what resources to provide to faculty, students, and staff. Some main uses of the Internet for philosophical research are: accessing texts, using search strategies to examine the texts, reading and writing electronic journal articles, accessing information from encyclopedias and dictionaries, browsing through paths of interlinked Web sites, searching the Internet for sources, and participating in online discussion forums. This article examines the Internet as a source of primary and secondary texts, journal literature, research databases, reference works, specialized limited area search engines, organizational information, and discussion lists. 为了了解青少年的网瘾情况,了解他们网络利用与图书馆利用之间的关系,我们运用问卷调查法对北京海淀区250名中学生进行了调查。调查结果显示,上网中学生中有网瘾的人数约占186%,有网瘾倾向的人数约占32.6%。网瘾青少年对网络环境下的娱乐活动存在偏好,对图书馆的网络资源和服务存在一定的需求。青少年充分利用图书馆能在一定程度上减少对网络的过度依赖。当前图书馆由于种种原因未能向公众提供优质的知识信息服务,很大一部分青少年因此不能或不愿利用图书馆。  相似文献

在高速信息网络化环境中,图书馆中的信息资源共享已超出传统印刷型文献的范围,而包括各类电子书目或全文数据库和用户能通过网络获取的网络信息资源,网络化图书馆将不再发展庞大馆藏,而是建立合作性馆藏以满足用户的信息需求。  相似文献
