Discussions of cataloging and metadata education are popular in social media outlets, scholarly literature, conference meetings, and so on. This article, the third installment of a longitudinal study on the state of information organization (IO) education, analyzes the recent literature to identify new and continuing themes related to IO education. It provides an overview of the curricula of the 58 library and information science graduate programs in the United States and Canada accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). It examines the current conditions in 2012–2013 and compares them to data from earlier studies. It provides an overview of the types of IO courses available, program requirements, the number of schools offering IO courses, and the number of schools teaching those courses. 相似文献

Definitions of “quality cataloging” may differ from cataloger to cataloger and from institution to institution. If an objective definition of quality is elusive, how can an institution assess the quality of cataloging work? This article discusses definitions of quality cataloging in the literature and different ways it has been evaluated and measured. Academic library catalogers' perceptions of quality cataloging will also be explored, as well as how these perceptions are formed. 认为新环境下的信息组织课程是对传统“编目”课程的继承与发展。因而,在教学思路上,一方面,信息组织课程要保留传统“编目”课程的精髓;另一方面,传统编目理论与技术又需要调整定位。同时,要强调信息组织理论素养和计算机技术在信息组织课程的重要性。在课程设置上,应考虑到信息组织在信息资源管理学科的位置和所承担的任务与职能,可采用层次化课程设置方法;在教学方法上,要注意平衡理论与实践,并兼顾各种载体和重视计算机教学。 相似文献

A collaborative cataloging project for music sound recordings between two University of California campuses matches available staffing at UC San Diego with the need for better access to a high-priority collection of audio CDs at UC Santa Barbara, with promising results. In the pre-digital environment, cataloging rules and library workflows were developed to manage these publications.
