ABSTRACT

In January 2000, the University of California created the Shared Cataloging Program (SCP). Based at the University of California, San Diego, the SCP is a “centralized cataloging model” for the California Digital Library consortium collections. This article will take an evolutionary look at the perpetual challenges of sustaining a consortial cataloging model and highlight the efforts of the SCP in the ongoing quest to eliminate the redundancy of efforts by centralizing the optimization of cataloging efficiency.  相似文献

This article provides an overview of the status of strategic planning in academic libraries. It discusses the trend towards “dialogic” (e.g. Appreciative Inquiry) rather than “diagnostic” (e.g. SWOT) approaches to strategic planning—a trend aligned with a dialogic movement in organization development. The authors explain the difference between dialogic and diagnostic methods and what made Appreciative Inquiry (AI) a good choice for strategic planning at Oviatt Library, California State University, Northridge (CSUN). In the final section, the authors present a case study of the Oviatt Library project with information about the planning process including staffing for the project. Although focused on academic libraries, the information about strategic planning frameworks and processes is applicable to any type of library.  相似文献

This article is a response to the excellent “Using Mobile Technology to Observe Student Study Behaviors and Track Library Space Usage” by Susan Thompson. Thompson reviews the literature regarding user counts on mobile devices and describes the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) Library's evaluation of SUMA, Counter+, and CloudOn. After trialing these mobile technologies, CSUSM selected CloudOn. At New York University Abu Dhabi, we use Google Forms to conduct user counts on an iPad and Google Sheets to evaluate these data. We find that Google Forms are easy to set up, modify as necessary, and present the data in easy-to-manipulate spreadsheets.  相似文献

北京大学图书馆的前身是京师大学堂藏书楼,1904年京师大学堂藏书楼改名为图书馆。藏书楼的负责人叫提调,图书馆的负责人叫图书馆经理官。从1898年创立,到1912年5月改名为北京大学校,京师大学堂共经历了4任藏书楼提调和4任图书馆经理官,合计7人,分别是李昭炜、骆成骧、梅光羲、徐廷麟、王诵熙、刘绵训、任钟澍,他们为京师大学堂藏书楼(图书馆)的建设发展作出了历史性的贡献。  相似文献

根据国家职业教育改革要求,围绕推进高职教育高质量发展的目标,结合南昌职业大学首批本科层次教学改革试点的总体部署,南昌职业大学图书馆积极探索常态化助力思政课教学的服务新模式。该馆采用在品牌活动《南职大悦读视界》中设置“主旋律影视展播助力思政课教学服务项目”,结合在《南职大讲堂》品牌活动中设置“助力思政课教学系列专题讲座”的办法,构建适合助力学校本科层次思政课教学改革试点需要的特色服务项目。本文仅以其中的主旋律影视展播助力思政课教学服务项目为例,推介应用需要与动机原理,采用以“热爱共产党、热爱新中国、热爱社会主义”为主题助力思政课教学的方法,创建独具特色的辅助思政课教学的基本服务形态。此举旨在介绍该馆如何有效提高助力思政课教学服务能力的同时,促进高校图书馆在增强图书馆资源满足能力、改进图书馆服务教学的策略、提升大学生政治思想素质、丰富大学生业余文化生活等方面有所创新,有所作为,切实为学校培养德、智、体、美、劳全面发展的社会主义建设者和接班人贡献图书馆人的智慧和力量。  相似文献

This article is based on a symposium held at the University of California, Berkeley, and sponsored by the Library, University of California, Berkeley; the Librarians Association of the University of California (Berkeley Division); and the School of Library and Information Studies, University of California, Berkeley. The author examines government information controls in the context of the constitutional and statutory tradition of open access to government information in the United States. He discusses the restrictive climate in which the Reagan administration views public access and warns that restrictive national security policies may actually curtail economic growth, retard defense programs, and undermine the Constitution.  相似文献

For years, academic institutions have established and maintained institutional repositories (IRs) to collect, preserve, and showcase their institution's research and scholarly output. Tammy Sugarman, Associate Dean for Collections at Georgia State University Library, presented “Library Technical Services: Key Ingredients in the Recipe for a Successful Institutional Repository” at the Mississippi State University Libraries eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit held at Mississippi State University, Mitchell Memorial Library on August 3, 2012. Sugarman provided historical background on IRs and explored the professional and organizational changes taking place in academic libraries to support IR programs, focusing on contributions of technical services units.  相似文献

Despite a variety of definitions, children’s books and picture books generally adhere to certain conventions. Depicting the Holocaust in children’s books challenges these conventions. The authors review the Holocaust literature for children, paying special attention to two picture books: Let the Celebrations Begin! by Margaret Wild and Julie Vivas, and Rose Blanche by Roberto Innocenti and Christophe Gallaz. Their analysis leads them to conclude the books for children that deal with horrific events should be viewed as a category of their own. Virginia A. Walter is an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has a Master of Library Science degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. Susan F. March is on the faculty of Kehillath Israel Religious School in Pacific Palisades, California. Abstract

When Villa Madonna College moved from Covington to Crestview Hills, Kentucky in 1968 to become Thomas More College, the designers of the new campus knew that the library would be a vital component of academic success for future students. As Thomas More transitioned from “College” to “University” in 2018, the library had unfortunately endured a long slow decline. With a recent renaming to the “Benedictine Library” in 2017, administration knew that more substantial changes were needed. In April 2018, the library started a new course with the 16th Library Director in institutional history. This column illustrates the ambitious first two years of the new library administration, and details the work completed in the library’s “digital modernization plan”.  相似文献

SUMMARY

This article will discuss three years of collaboration between the Freshman Engineering Program and the Engineering Library of the University Library System at the University of Pittsburgh. This collaboration has resulted in a library research project that is integrated into the freshman curriculum. The project ultimately provides the students with a research structure for presentations in an annual mock professional conference. The mission of the Freshman Engineering Program's academic and advising components is to create a first-year experience that promotes the student's continued pursuit of an engineering degree through commitment to clearly understood and self-declared goals. The goal for the Engineering Library is to introduce library research as a necessary skill-set for successful engineers. The successful outcome of all of these goals requires the collaboration between “teaching” faculty and “library” faculty and results in better prepared, more focused students. Developing and integrating a library research project into the freshman engineering academic curriculum is a significant opportunity for library instruction, and the approach demonstrated here may be transferable to other disciplines.  相似文献

This is the fifth in a series on the economics of broadcasting written by Kenneth Harwood. Articles on the “ecology” of broadcasters (Vol. 6, No. 3), distribution of payrolls (7:4), “On Earning a Non‐Profit” (11:1), and “On Public Broadcasting for Private Profit” (11:3) already have appeared in the Journal. Dr. Harwood is professor and dean in the School of Communications and Theater of Temple University, chairman of the board of Broadcast Foundation of California, and an active member of numerous professional associations. ABSTRACT

The article examines the application of innovative approaches in the information literacy training of library and information science students in Bulgaria. The change of the educational paradigm in the field is presented based on recent developments in one of the oldest Bulgarian institutions that prepares librarians and information specialists—the State University of Library Studies and Information Technologies. The active learning strategies suitable for information literacy skills development courses are studied by the use of three methods: “learning by doing,” “interaction in the learning group,” “learning by trial and error” within the practical training of students. The prospects for transforming information literacy instruction through the elaboration of digital educational games and a game-based learning model in the frame of the international project tiLIT are also outlined.  相似文献

Abstract

The University of Texas at Arlington's Library began using an online chat reference in 2002. The service, called Collaborative Digital Reference Service, later became “Ask a Librarian.” Slightly over one year later, the library joined the University of Texas System's “Ask a Librarian” service. Both services are powered by software suite called QuestionPoint. In May 2003 and May 2004, the library's reference staff shared their views towards this new reference tool by completing a questionnaire. 为应对高校图书馆图书借阅量逐年下滑、阅读推广活动读者参与热情不高的局面,广西财经学院图书馆通过“静心阅读”活动的举办,有效提升了读者的阅读体验。“静心阅读”案例也给高校图书馆的阅读推广活动带来启示,指出高校图书馆需要重视满足读者个性化需求、提高活动的有效性及应采取的一些激励措施。  相似文献
