Faced with diminishing staffs and budgets, and the difficulty of recruiting skilled serialists, librarians are exploring alternative methods for getting the job done. Several members of the National Library of Medicine staff describe their experiences with Flexiplace, a program that allows employees to do most of their work from home with small purchase orders or contracts for services. Flexiplace is described, and the successes and limitations of working with contracts for special language cataloging, binding preparation, check-in, and other tasks are discussed.  相似文献

Summary

Cochenour designed this workshop for serialists who have had little or no experience with Internet browsers. After defining essential concepts and functions of browsers, the presenter and two assistants led the sixteen participants in a series of exercises in Netscape Navigator. Attendees learned to customize a Web screen, assign HTML markup tags to text, and incorporate images and links to other Web sites into a home page. Ms. Cochenour provided two handouts, which contained not only basic information about browsers, but several pertinent references as well.  相似文献

Wendy Robertson shared her experience with digitization projects in which she had been involved at the University of Iowa Libraries. She emphasized the need for serialists to take a participatory role in any digitization projects that include serials. Serialist participation is necessary due to the complications that may occur when digitizing serial runs. Robertson provided practical information regarding digitization projects in general terms, while also mentioning some of the specific technical aspects. She presented a wide variety of existing serial digitization projects in order to show how they are organized. Robertson concluded that a serial digitization project will benefit greatly, by being better organized and more accessible, when a serialist is included in its production.  相似文献

The future is not perfectly predictable. However, as serialists it is our job to predict the future in some very real ways, and current trends give us valuable tools for at least figuring out a range of possible future scenarios. Certain trends in particular point to highly likely developments in the near future, and wise libraries will position themselves to deal with those developments. They include a continued drift on the part of researchers away from printed resources, from the library catalog, and from non-unique collections, with a concomittant rise in the importance of unique collections and locally-produced scholarships. Libraries can future-proof themselves by, in part, turning decisively away from resources and services that patrons are abandoning and towards those resources and services that are likely to grow in importance.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article will describe how a revolution in customer service provision beginning in 2002 has led to an evolution of library services. When the reference and circulation desks were merged to create a single service point, responsibilities were broadened, core competencies were developed, and staff members were cross trained. In 2005, an analysis of staffing and work patterns demonstrated a need to build upon the original model to better utilize staff and ensure coverage of the desk. Reference librarians were moved to “on call” status, technical services staff were added to the schedule, and core competencies and procedures were refined.  相似文献

Graduate students at the University of Manitoba were surveyed to find out if they used reference management software (RMS), features used, challenges and barriers to using RMS. Interest in different types of PDF management features and training options were also investigated. Both users and non-users of reference management software were invited to participate. Non-users managed their citations and references with a variety of other tools. The principal reasons for non-use were that students were not aware of options that were available, and the amount of time needed to learn the program. RMS users also mentioned the steep learning curve, problems with extracting metadata from PDFs, technical issues, and problems with inaccurate citation styles. Most of the students saved PDF documents to their computer. Students were most interested in full-text searching of PDFs, automatic renaming of PDFs, and automatically extracting citation metadata from a PDF. PDF annotation and reading tools were also of some interest. Mobile features were of the least interest. There were no statistically significant differences in the interest of PDF management features between the user and non-user groups but there were statistically significant differences in the interest of some of the training options between the groups.  相似文献

The research aimed to discover the perceived impact and to identify the value of four information skills teaching interventions within the curriculum in three faculties at the University of the West of England. Faculty and library staff interviews and student focus groups were used to gather evidence about the perceived impact of the interventions, to identify possible enhancements and to investigate the drivers and barriers to embedding information skills teaching within modules. Staff and students were positive about the structure, content, and administration of the library interventions and the impact of librarians on the success of the sessions. The overwhelming majority of comments relating to the perceived impact of library interventions (84%) were positive and none was negative. One fifth of the comments noted a perceived increase in confidence in searching for information. Improved searching behavior and development of new skills were reported. Where skills were assessed students were motivated to engage, particularly when marks were awarded. The librarian/faculty staff relationship and a desire to improve student engagement with library information skills teaching were key factors in driving the embedding and assessment of library interventions.  相似文献

This study tested Feeley and Barnett's (1997) Erosion Model (EM) of employee turnover which predicts that individuals who are more central in their communication network will be more likely to remain at their position (or less likely to turnover). Seventy employees from three different organizations were surveyed about their attitudes toward their jobs and were also asked to indicate (by checklist) which employees they spoke to regularly at work. Turnover data were obtained at 3 and 6 months time after the surveys were completed. Results generally supported the Erosion Model of employee turnover. Those employees with high Degree or number of links in the network were less likely to turnover. Employees who required fewer links to communicate to all others in the network (i.e., Closeness) were also less likely to turnover but this relationship only approached statistical significance (p = .06). Betweenness, defined as the frequency with which a person falls between pairs of other positions in a network, was also significantly related to employee turnover. It was also predicted, based on Feeley and Bamett's EM, that the relationship between network position and turnover would be mediated by an employee's level of commitment to the organization and his or her intentions to leave work. Closeness significantly predicted commitment while Betweenness and Degree were unrelated to commitment levels. Organizational commitment was negatively related to intentions to leave work and, unexpectedly, commitment levels were positively related to employee turnover. The results were discussed and the applications of this research for management practitioners were considered.  相似文献

目的:了解当前国际情报学研究现状,总结研究热点,提供参考信息。方法:采用引文分析方法,对国外6种情报学核心期刊2001~2006年发表的学术论文进行调查分析,并用SPSS对高频被引文献进行同被引聚类分析。根据各个类中的文献内容分析当前研究的热点。结果:检得SSCI数据库中相关文献2320篇,其参考文献出现频次高于30次的论文47篇。高被引论文聚类分析树图分6类。结论:当前情报学研究热点主要集中于六个方面:网络信息资源评价、文献及作者同被引分析、信息组织处理、用户信息检索行为研究、情报学在医学领域的应用及基本理论阐述。  相似文献

为了提高编辑对科技论文摘要的编辑加工水平,通过对我国2009年理工类科技期刊报道性摘要的统计分析,找出了摘要撰写中存在的3类主要问题:缺少研究目的或者研究目的不明确;研究方法不充实,逻辑性差;结果表述过于简单、笼统,结论表达空泛。结合编辑工作实际,举例说明摘要的编辑加工技巧。认为科技论文摘要是可以通过编辑与作者的共同努力而更加完善的。  相似文献

[目的/意义]从主题时序视角出发,以中国图书馆学会年会主题和年会论文集题录为研究样本,进行相关主题词的分布和演化分析,梳理中国图书馆界近十年来理论与实践发展脉络。[方法/过程]获取2007-2017年间中国图书馆学会年会的相关主题词,从中选择高频词,利用Excel构造主题词共词矩阵,利用Ucinet和SPSS工具进行主题词静态分布分析,结合"流行研究热点权值(PRHW)"指标对主题词进行动态演化分析。通过词频、中心性、聚类对比分析相关主题词的静态分布特征;通过词频时序和共词时序分析主题词的动态演化特征,并采用PRHW指标进行识别和演绎;从7个类团中抽取两个典型主题词构筑全主题词的共词时序网络。[结果/结论]相关主题词的静态分布特征表现为:年会主题词和论文集主题词高频词一致性较好,论文主题词更微观具体;二者都不具备显著的中心性;聚类结果根据相近原则归并出7个具体类团。主题词的动态演化特征表现为:分长期关注、早期关注、近来关注上升和近来关注下降四类,相关主题的微观演化特征得到了精细化呈现。  相似文献

选择2009—2010年《第三军医大学学报》因存在学术不端行为而退稿的84篇稿件,2011年10月利用全文数据库追踪其是否在其他期刊发表。结果显示:有34篇(40.50%)已公开发表,其中仅6篇有所修改,其余均原文发表,仍然存在学术不端;其中17篇(50.00%)在退稿7个月后发表,有7篇(20.59%)在3个月内发表。针对其可能原因,建议所有期刊联合起来,主动防范学术不端,重视稿件查重工作,规范学术不端行为的判断标准,提高编辑责任心及对学术不端的鉴别能力,依托学术不端检测系统建立共享问题数据库,以及加强对作者的宣传教育,建立有效的监督机制。  相似文献

A total of 529 respondents who had participated in fantasy sport in the past year completed a survey regarding their media consumption habits and motivations for play. Significant age divides were uncovered between players who were younger than age 35 as opposed to respondents who were 35 and older. Overall, younger participants consumed 4.2 more hours of sports media content per week and were more likely to participate in fantasy sport because of entertainment, enjoyment, and surveillance desires. In contrast, older participants were more likely to participate in fantasy sport to pass the time, even though consumption research indicates that they spent less time devoted to the activity than their younger counterparts. In addition, younger participants were more likely than older participants to exhibit a desire to establish and exhibit elements of personal sports knowledge. Implications for communication researchers interested in media and/or sport are articulated.  相似文献

SUMMARY

An analysis of 96 question and answer pairs from the Bayside Library Ask a Librarian Service found that 54 percent of the queries were received from Bayside residents. Forty-seven percent of the e-mail reference questions were classed as research queries. Although only 25.1 percent of the queries were submitted for formal education purposes, all of these were research questions, and took longer than any other category to answer. In 2001, only 6 of the 54 questions submitted were tertiary level questions, but it took a median time of 95 minutes to answer each one. The 24 general interest category questions took a median time of 47.5 minutes to answer, which is almost half the time it took to answer a tertiary level query.

Librarians from three other public libraries in Victoria offering e-mail reference were interviewed, and compared and contrasted with the Bayside Library Service.

Issues of disproportionate labour, the appearance of the passive role of the e-mail reference user, and the wisdom of public libraries devoting significant resources to answer questions for formal education were raised.  相似文献

[目的/意义]从内容差异来探索论文未被引规律,不仅是论文未被引现象研究的重要内容,也有利于扩展基于内容的引文分析方法范畴。[方法/过程]以CSSCI作为来源数据库,以图书馆情报与文献学为样本学科,依据该学科学者的h指数分布特征随机选择200名学者作为样本对象,下载其1998-2015年的所有被收录论文数据;下载样本学科1998-2015年的所有收录论文数据,并离析出对应被引论文、高被引论文的相关数据;以6年为时间窗口,将发表后1-3年内被引的论文定义为被引论文,其余的为未被引论文;析取未被引论文、被引论文、学科整体论文及高被引论文的关键词,按关键词频数从高到低排序,选取排序前50的关键词构成关键词向量,计算关键词向量的内积、欧几里得长度和余弦相似度。[结果/结论]图书馆情报与文献学领域在21世纪初形成较为稳定的研究内容体系,其未被引论文与学科整体论文、被引论文、高被引论文的内容相似度都较低,表明研究内容对论文未被引有重要影响。  相似文献

An academic medical library expanded its iPad loan service to multiple campus libraries and conducted an assessment of the service. iPads loaded with medical and educational apps were loaned for two-week checkouts from five library campus locations. Device circulation statistics were tracked and users were invited to complete an online survey about their experience. Data were gathered and analyzed for 11 months. The assessment informed the library on how best to adapt the service, including what resources to add to the iPads, and the decision to move devices to campuses with more frequent usage.  相似文献
