Propelled by the recent economic recession that caused substantial declines in advertising revenue, some major newspapers have renewed their efforts to find alternative revenue models. This renewed interest in paid content strategy triggered another round of debates on the viability of the “paywall.” To address the recurring industry debate, this study, based on a national survey of 767 U.S. online adults, systematically evaluated users' paying intent for different newspaper formats, the amount they are willing to pay, as well as users' responses to various payment models being considered by the industry. Results showed the print edition outperforms other formats (Web & “apps”) in terms of usage, preference, and paying intent; and is perceived as the most valuable platform. Paying intent for the online formats (Web & apps) was weak, and so was people's response to each of the 6 payment models under study. Therefore, how users are charged does not make much difference—whether they are charged does. The analysis also identified the predictors of paying intent for newspaper formats and different payment models. Although multiplatform news delivery has become a reality, paying intent for digital news content remains elusive.  相似文献

Drawing on the theory of the economics of information, this study sheds light on the factors that influence willingness to pay for online news, using a telephone survey of 570 US (from the Pew Research Center) adults selected at random. Results of the logistic regression analysis revealed relationships between paying intent and predictor variables such as demographics (age and income), purchase of other digital products (online movies or TV content, software programs, eBooks and applications) and media use (Twitter). However, independent variables such as gender (demographics), video games and music files (purchase of other digital products) were not statistically significant. Future research on the economics of news may take into account these findings focused on studying paying intent.  相似文献

What future roles will publishers need to build on and develop given changes driven by the online system for the publication of research‐based information? By reviewing some of the key issues currently faced by publishers online, this article is an attempt to provide a constructive framework for working through both immediate tactical pressures and priorities, and longer‐term plans on product refinement and market needs. The areas of publishing affected by online availability are identified and contrasted with those that are not. Success rests on the ability of publishers to listen to and observe online users, to be open to the new opportunities that arise, and to be willing to adapt publications to provide value to the research community and libraries by making full and sound use of online as it becomes the dominant route for accessing research information.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 期刊从订阅模式转向开放获取模式有多种途径,其中"为开放而订阅(S2O)"是一种新兴模型,正越来越受到向开放获取过渡的传统出版商的认可与接纳。[方法/过程] 运用文献调研法与内容分析法,梳理S2O模型的背景、发展,比较9家出版商采用S2O模型的75种期刊的情况。[结果/结论] 指出S2O模型的潜在问题包含订阅机构的流失、图书馆/文献中心的财政预算审查障碍、订阅费用透明度较差;解决措施包括经费补充机制及提供S2O模型期刊的使用数据。从为出版商提供开放获取转换的新途径、有利于保障非营利性出版商的发展两个方面提出S2O开放获取模式,为我国开放获取的理论与实践带来重要启示。  相似文献

以百度百科为例,通过对比传统辞书的编辑规范,探讨基于网络平台的互动百科全书正在形成的编辑规范及其特点,具体分为道德规范、工作规范、技术规范三个方面。指出网络互动百科全书在年轻网民中有广泛影响,但网络词条的内容存在不足。如何完善网络词条的编辑规范并建立相应的评价标准,应该引起传统辞书出版界以及百度词条使用者的关注。  相似文献

This paper represents an exploratory study into an emerging culture in UK online newsrooms—the practice of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), which assesses its impact on news production. Comprising a short-term participant observational case study at a national online news publisher, and a series of semi-structured, in-depth interviews with SEO professionals at three further UK media organisations, the author sets out to establish how SEO is operationalised in the newsroom, and what consequences these practices have for online news production. SEO practice is found to be varied and application is not universal. Not all UK news organisations are making the most of SEO even though some publishers take a highly sophisticated approach. Efforts are constrained by time, resources and management support, as well as off-page technical issues. SEO policy is found, in some cases, to inform editorial policy, but there is resistance to the principal of SEO driving decision-making. Several themes are established which call for further research.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The online environment has radically changed the way in which users consume, discover and manipulate news. The growing relevance of social media platforms and digital intermediaries for news sharing and consumption increase the likelihood of citizens to be exposed to online news even when they are not seeking it. This digital transformation fundamentally challenges the way online news use and exposure have been conceptualized and measured, affecting also to citizens’ knowledge about public affairs and politics. This article examines the factors that predict the probability to be an “incidentally exposed news user” online. Specifically, based on a representative US sample from the Pew Research Centre, this study analyses the role of media preference, use and trust. Findings indicate that beyond users’ demographics and loyalty, readers’ news preferences, uses and trust, specially of social media platforms, affect their probability to be incidentally exposed to news online. These results have important empirical and theoretical implications for understanding the connection between readers’ news consumption patterns and online exposure, intentional or incidental.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 开放获取进程中的"双重收费"问题引起了出版商、图书馆及科研人员的关注与讨论。本文在此背景下分析探索学术期刊从订阅模式向开放获取模式转化的中国路径,以期引起高校图书馆对开放获取进程中"双重收费"问题的关注,为新时期高校图书馆文献资源建设的转型发展提供启示。[方法/过程] 通过文献调研与网络调研,梳理高校图书馆推动学术期刊从订阅模式向开放获取模式转化的必然性和可行性,以及当前学术期刊从订阅模式向开放获取模式转化的相关实践,分析总结高校图书馆在推动学术期刊从订阅模式向开放获取模式转化过程中的困境,并就如何实现转化提出相关建议。[结果/结论] 高校图书馆应从观念上认识到学术期刊从订阅模式向开放获取模式转化的重要性,把研究全面开放获取作为图书馆文献资源建设的重要工作之一,以高校联盟的形式主动开展评估调研,参与国家层面的规则制定,积极研究定价模式,推进相关政策落地,推动科研成果共建共享最大化。  相似文献
