Successive entry cataloging was developed to cope with the mounting recataloging work required by latest entry cataloging practice. Successive entry cataloging in the automated environment has now become a hindrance to the efficient processing and retrieval of serial publications. Online updating of fields in a bibliographic record to reflect title changes can be done simply and economically. A single master record (earliest or latest entry) with access points for title changes prevent holdings from being fragmented. Latest entry cataloging may be desirable since users tend to request recent issues. It is desirable also for serials check-in.  相似文献

New forms of publication have called into question AACR2’s current division of the type of publication into monographs and serials. This paper analyzes the recommendations in the April 1999 report to the Joint Steering Committee (JSC) on AACR, “Revising AACR2 to Accommodate Seriality.” The JSC report presents a new type of publication model, which recognizes elements of seriality in resources that do not meet the current AACR2 definition of serial. Recommendations in the JSC report attempt to provide rules for the cataloging of new forms of materials as well as solutions to other current cataloging problems. Some of these solutions are based on incorporating and adapting the best of former rules and practices. Anticipated benefits of the rule revision include harmonization of AACR2 with international standards, reduction of needless title changes, and a more holistic approach to serials cataloging.  相似文献

The implementation of the NOTIS system at the University of Louisville Libraries has introduced various changes to Serials cataloging in Ekstrom Library. An initial goal was to provide a clean database, containing all currently received serial titles. The decision by Ekstrom Library to maintain a permanent order record on the current title necessitates frequent record manipulation as serial titles change. Bibliographic records are overlaid, which requires correcting copy holdings records and moving item records. Procedures within the Serials Section continue to change as staff work to provide a complete database of serial holdings.  相似文献

This paper proposes a way to program the online catalog to retrieve and display together related serial records, by using the current accepted practice of successive entry cataloging and those MARC bibliographic fields unique to a successive entry record. The underlying theme to the discussion is that the cataloging record alone need not always bear the burden of explaining itself to the user; in fact, the online catalog with its menu options and displays can and should provide a useful structure within itself, a structure essential to the effective use of any library catalog.  相似文献

Motion pictures are usually entered under title. This cataloging tradition is examined against AACR2 and earlier codes to determine its source, and to assess the extent of its compliance with, or deviation from the current cataloging code. The authorship conditions of motion pictures are discussed in an attempt to establish criteria for choice of main entry that are consistent with general principles of cataloging. Suggestions are made for modifying AACR2 to accommodate the main entry needs of motion pictures and other works with comparable authorship conditions.  相似文献

This article discusses the fact that recataloging of serial records is one of the most time-consuming areas in a serials cataloger's work. The factors lying behind the changes to the various parts of the cataloging record are reviewed and the methodology of making these changes is examined. The growing importance of cooperative cataloging is related to recataloging and to the cataloger's obligation to make complete and up-to-date information available to both the library user and the library world in general.

Summary

Many aspects of electronic serials cataloging have not yet developed standard practice, or are still in transition. This article will explore some problematic issues in electronic serials cataloging first by presenting current CONSER policy in these areas and then by examining the practices of three institutions who are cataloging electronic serials. For brevity, the term “electronic serial” will be used to mean “remote access computer file serial” unless the more specific term is needed for clarity. The five topics covered in this discussion are: Access and Location Information, Multiple Versions, Definition of Electronic Serial, Bibliographic Access Points and Display of Computer File Characteristics.  相似文献

Classification of periodicals can be done for either of two reasons- to place bound periodical volumes in the stacks close to monographs on the same subject or to organize the volumes in a separate periodicals area. Either reason provides a key to locating periodicals that does not depend on the patron's ability to interpret spine titles, title changes, or changing cataloging codes. If the choice is to integrate bound periodical volumes with the monographs, the same classification system must be used. For a separate bound periodicals area, many libraries have developed schemes to organize their titles on the shelves in alphabetical order by entry. Which choice is best depends on where a library chooses to shelve its periodicals and how the library staff believes patrons approach the task of finding titles.  相似文献

The article provides an outline from an historical standpoint of how Italian cataloging rules have dealt with serials and gives a general picture of the current situation and trends. The most recent of the three national codes issued up to the present lime (1921,1956, and 1979) recommends the creation of a separate catalog for this type of publication in conformity with a national standard (UNI norm 6392) conceived outside the framework of the functions of the general library catalog. There exists, however, a substantially uniform cataloging tradition that allows access by title and deals with title changes in accordance with the principle of successive entry. The only existing national periodical file was created by the Istituto di studi sulla ricerca e documentazione scientifica (ISRDS) of the Consiglio nazionale delle ricerche (CNR), set up in conformity with UNI norm 6392. The existence of this file, whose records are to be adapted and converted, forms the basis of a government project to create a periodical file within the catalog of the National Library Service (SBN).  相似文献

The AACR2 uniform titles used to identify serials (and, to some extent, the code's entry of serials in general) are examined, and difficulties are found to exist with both. The author therefore recommends that serial entry be restricted to title or uniform title constructed according to the generally accepted ISDS provisions for key titles.  相似文献

Serials represent a growing proportion of published literature and budget allocations. Since serials frequently contain the most current information and latest reports of research activity, they both generate many reference questions and supply the answers. Due to the continuing and changing nature of serials, their records are more difficult to interpret than are monograph records. The philosophy underlying the creation of serial records, the variations in serial cataloging rules, and the effects of automation partially explain what appears in our catalogs. A review of the essential elements in serial bibliographic records accents the unique characteristics of serials and the problems encountered in trying to create records that are consistent and intelligible.  相似文献
