A recent survey revealed that very few libraries were doing any significant weeding in their reference collections. Yet weeding the reference collection may have as great an impact on the library as a whole as weeding the general collection. This article discusses some of the author's experiences weeding the reference collection at Georgia State University and the ways in which general weeding concerns, such as planning for staffing, establishing criteria, and formulating selection policies, may be applied to the reference collection. Reference materials differ in nature and use from materials in the general collection, and this article analyses the impact these differences have on the weeding effort.  相似文献

A carefully developed weeding process is an essential element in any thorough collection management effort. A successful weeding program requires detailed planning and careful development of criteria for selecting materials. Options for storage, staffing constraints, alternative methods for weeding, and preservation issues must all be considered carefully in implementing a weeding program. With careful planning that relates to the institution's goals, such a program can make a significant contribution to the effective management of any library's collection.  相似文献

This study postulates that too little discarding is being practiced and that library shelves contain quantities of unused and unwanted materials. It finds that few practicing librarians feel that sufficient weeding is being done. It finds also that most deacquisitions research is carried out in college and university libraries, since serious problems exist in such libraries. Finally, it indicates that deacquisitions is one of the best techniques available for the long-range building of useful collections, as weeding improves the efficiency and vitality of a collection in the same way that unnecessary items weaken it.  相似文献

The University of Dayton Roesch Library reorganized the collection development and acquisitions departments during 1995 and 1996 in order to improve the collection and make the process of acquiring materials more responsive to the needs of students and faculty. The old organization was department-based, with teaching faculty controlling most of the materials budget. The Associate Director for Technical Services coordinated the funds and supervised acquisitions staff. Perceived imbalances in the collection, student and faculty dissatisfaction with the process, and the desire for public services librarians to have greater influence in collection decisions led to a major reorganization. The new model distributes budget authority among all librarians based on subjects rather than academic departments. It empowers librarians to make purchasing and weeding decisions within their subject areas. Book and periodical acquisitions are combined into a single support unit that reports to the Coordinator and Head of Collection Management. The new organization has streamlined acquisitions processes to make ordering simpler, and the time between ordering and receipt has been shortened. The new model shifts the emphasis from process to service.  相似文献

Libraries supporting health sciences programs must periodically weed collections to remove outdated materials. Both print and e-book collections should be weeded. This article outlines the process Auburn Montgomery librarians followed to weed the NetLibrary e-book collection supporting the School of Nursing curriculum. The nursing courses are taught primarily online or as hybrid courses, increasing reliance on remotely accessible electronic resources. While this e-book weeding project is focused on a specific subject area and the number of e-books weeded is small, the basic method can be applied to larger e-book weeding projects in subject areas other than nursing.  相似文献

Weeding collections of older materials in order to make room for newer materials is now an accepted part of librarianship. Accordingly, a consistent set of objective principles for weeding now exist. Applying these objective principles of weeding to older social sciences materials is problematic in light of the epistemological debate over how the social sciences are, or should be practiced. This article will first discuss the debate over the nature of the social sciences. It will then outline the objective principles of weeding. These principles will be then be applied to an older social scientific journal that is a candidate for weeding. Finally, the article will discuss how the debate in the social sciences potentially can affect the librarian's judgment about these older materials.  相似文献

Just as the collection development policy is based on the objectives, scope and goals of a library, so is the broader collection management policy. Collection management goes beyond a policy of acquiring materials to address policies on retention, discard and weeding, preservation, and housing. A clear policy for each stage of materials handling contributes to the long range success of collection development. The author also points out the costs involved with each of these activities that library administrators must be aware of for effective management of the collection.  相似文献

Maintaining a clinical HIV/AIDS section in an academic library collection that is both current and historically significant for research is essential. This article reports on a collection management project that was undertaken to weed HIV/AIDS books in targeted clinical areas of an academic library using a timeline model developed by Ondrusek (2001) as a supplement to traditional weeding methods. The combination proved effective for identifying clinical materials that were outdated and needed to be deaccessioned while maintaining historically relevant materials in these areas.  相似文献

In 2008, the University of Louisville’s (UofL) Ekstrom Library printed reference collection numbered almost 30,000 volumes. Copious collecting and sparse weeding built up the collection during the era before the Internet. There had been considerable reluctance to address its more outdated sections due to competing priorities and inertia. A change of leadership as well as the recognition of changing use patterns had lessened the need for such a large collection. In 2011, three librarians began a title-by-title review process that resulted in an 86% reduction of the reference collection by 2014. This article describes that process, summarizes the results, and discusses the benefits and disadvantages of this approach.  相似文献

This study assesses the reference collection management practices and strategies used in the reference departments of academic members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Librarians who participate in the management of the humanities and social science reference collections within ARL member libraries responded to an online survey about collection development policies, acquisition processes, collection use, weeding, and marketing of their reference collections. The results of this survey suggest that a large percentage of academic ARL member libraries are weeding their collections regularly, measuring use of the print and electronic reference collection, and moving decidedly toward electronic reference materials.  相似文献

Library and archives conservation and collection management concerns are similar. Both need to be addressed in institutional policies and well defined objectives for procedures and priorities in selecting materials for long-range preservation. Collection weeding withdrawal from primary use to low-use retention facilities and decisions about treatment are key ingredients in a conservation program which is well integrated into collection management. Successful programs in either archives and libraries must be embedded into the policies and activities of the organization rather than being ancillary and remedial. The administrative emphasis must be on sustained, systematic and programmatic approaches to the conservation problems facing both archives and libraries.  相似文献

Although systematic weeding of library reference collections has repeatedly been recommended as an essential method for keeping collections accurate, current, and accessible, few practical guides have been put forth to assist librarians in this task. The present article reports on one library's successful weeding-by-commitee program. Through a process involving individual recommendation followed by group approval/disapproval, small segments of the reference collection were reviewed on a monthly basis. A written collection development policy provided the theoretical support for the decision-making that occurred. The benefits of the weeding program extended beyond the obvious reduction of outdated or unused material.  相似文献

This study examined the reference collection weeding and evaluation practices of a selected group of academic, public, and county library systems. Results revealed that only two of the fourteen libraries had written guidelines specifically for reference, and only one of these was a complete document. The most common unwritten criteria for weeding related to age and use of materials, and most libraries conducted systematic evaluation of the reference collection, primarily by means of comparisons to checklists or standard lists of recommended titles. However, most libraries did not regularly conduct formal use studies. The use of CD-ROM reference tools, which was fairly widespread and well accepted, was expected to have an increasingly significant impact on reference collection development in the future. Major findings are summarized, and a list of questions provided for further study and research.  相似文献

Abstract

The literature indicates most academic libraries do not have formal reference collection policies, or that if they do, such documents are not up-to-date. Kansas provides an optimum setting to examine college and undergraduate libraries as most institutions of higher learning in the state are small to medium in size. Kansas is consistent with the trends indicated in the literature. All academic libraries in the state were asked to submit a copy of their policy. Each document was examined in light of: rationale for having a policy, defining the nature of the collection, criteria on inclusion and exclusion, input from stakeholders, managing budget costs, electronic resources, and weeding. Selection criteria and sample polices provide a practical guide for the development of a policy. All formats are considered.  相似文献

Deselection is a necessary but politically sensitive part of an academic librarian's responsibilities. To provide an overview of the emotional dynamics involved in weeding an academic collection, this article analyzes editorials, articles, and book chapters chronicling faculty response to weeding from a psycholinguistic viewpoint. Using computer-based text analysis, these accounts are examined for the amount and type of emotional content they contain. These findings provide a template for what librarians can expect when beginning a deselection process and point to best practices for working effectively with faculty to create a robust and healthy collection.  相似文献

Computerization of reserve section records enabled a midwest academic library to institute a systematic weeding procedure and to create an easy, accurate, and up-tp-date indexing system for the reserve book collection. Data for the system is maintained on an IBM 3741 key-to-diskette data station, on floppy diskettes. The system produces an author (main entry) master list which reformats as a title index, a course number index, and an instructor name index. Implementation of the system resulted in the withdrawal of over 10,000 obsolete items and reduced the size of the reserve collection by 50 percent. Circulation statistics indicated that the elimination of the obsolete materials has not adversely affected the use of current reserve materials.  相似文献

This article describes the process designed to systematically weed two community college library reference collections in preparation for potential funding of a learning commons space. The author explains the methodology used to help facilitate the reassessment of nearly 10,000 reference titles by librarian liaisons. The goal of the project was to consistently capture each title’s weeding status designation along with required bibliographic data while stopping short of executing the weeding itself. Details about the process and consequences of the resulting category breakdowns are described in detail. The article lists key success factors such as working with teams from different departments to help manage the day-to-day procedures. Practical suggestions are offered about the use of collaborative tools, about methods for transmitting support data to liaison librarians to enable quick decisions, about goal setting, and about establishing consistent means of data collection.  相似文献

In the fall of 1985, four rural Illinois public libraries were weeded as part of a research project funded by the lllinois State Library. In each library, ten percent of the collection was removed by identifying books with low circulation rates in the circulating adult collection. Shelf time period and subjective opinion were used as weeding criteria. Although this cooperative weeding approach accurately identified books that would remain unused, weeding was not met with a corresponding increase in circulation.  相似文献

This essay presents the case for pruning an academic reference collection. Rather than a theoretical discourse on the virtues and vices of weeding, we present a practical discussion that focuses on the actual implementation of a reference pruning project. Thus we cover the planning stages, the logistics of organization, criteria for weeding, and the communication issues that seem always to arise during a weeding project. We also discuss various modes and modalities for dealing with conflict resolution as well as the vexing question of how to deal with reference serials in both their traditional and electronic formats. The emphasis throughout the paper is on the practical problems, issues, and concerns likely to confront librarians attempting to organize and carry out a reference collection review/pruning program.  相似文献
