Reference collection development should be seen as an integral part of the overall management of academic research library collections. The reference librarian benefits from participation in the development of collection development policy statements based on a collection evaluation using the Research Libraries Group (RLG) Conspectus. The writing of cormprehensive collection development policy statements using the RLG Conspectus to evaluate subject collections requires that collection management librarians and reference librarians work closely together and integrate the development of the reference collection into overall collection development plans for the library. This article discusses some of the functions of collection management divisions and the potential components of a Conspectus-based comprehensive collection development policy statement. The sharing of the process between the collection management librarian and the reference librarian/selector is described. Benefits the reference librarian gains from the process are discussed. 相似文献

The heart of the library lies in its collections, and collections have to be built continuously. Budgetary constraints perforce stress the need for better defined collection development policy, although the ultimate goal should be an improvement of library service rather than any reduction of library cost. A written collection development policy facilitates a consistent and balanced growth of library resources, and a dynamic policy is one that evolves as the institution grows. Such a policy is based on the understanding of the needs of the community it serves and seeks to define and delimit the goals and objectives of the institution. A collection development statement is not a substitute for book selection; it charts the forest but does not plant the trees. It should be used as a guidepost, not a crutch. Book selection requires judgment and the courage to choose. A sound collection development policy, on the other hand, provides the necessary rational without which a collection may grow amoebalike, by means of pseudopodia. 相似文献

Factors affecting the role and development of academic and research libraries during the more immediate future are discussed. Consideration is given to the advancement and improvement of library service in the context of access to information and materials, and the reliance on resource sharing through cooperation of an informal nature and through networks. Implications are outlined: specifically, the resulting importance of document delivery, the effects on collection growth and management and on the relationship of the academic library with its parent body and with other libraries. Recommendations are made for increased access to library holdings through distributed networks, the improvement of interlibrary loan, the implementation of cooperative collection management, a reappraisal of collection evaluation criteria, and the appropriate ritualization of management skills and technology. 相似文献

There is a trend among academic libraries to increase collaboration between interlibrary loan and collection development to improve patron access to materials and build library collections. Instead of borrowing returnable materials, interlibrary loan may initiate purchases that will become part of the library's collection. This can mean anything from an organizational change combining interlibrary loan with the acquisitions unit or creating new workflows to facilitate purchasing. At the University of North Texas Libraries, the Interlibrary Loan office is a unit of the Access Services Department. Buying instead of borrowing for the ILL unit began with a Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) program and has expanded with the establishment of the University of North Texas Libraries' access-based collection development policy. Interlibrary Loan provides “Just-In-Time” (JIT) access to materials not available through regular interlibrary loan sources and adds relevant materials to the Libraries' collections. 相似文献

Maintaining a clinical HIV/AIDS section in an academic library collection that is both current and historically significant for research is essential. This article reports on a collection management project that was undertaken to weed HIV/AIDS books in targeted clinical areas of an academic library using a timeline model developed by Ondrusek (2001) as a supplement to traditional weeding methods. The combination proved effective for identifying clinical materials that were outdated and needed to be deaccessioned while maintaining historically relevant materials in these areas. 相似文献

[目的/意义]开放科学环境对研究型图书馆资源建设与服务提出新的要求,分析在开放科学环境下研究型图书馆--美国国立医学图书馆转型现状,有助于为国内研究型图书馆转型提供借鉴。[方法/过程]在分析开放科学构成要素的基础上,从图书馆发展战略、图书馆资源建设和图书馆服务3个角度,总结美国国立医学图书馆为应对开放科学的发展要求而做出的战略层面的演变,并重点分析其资源建设实践（开放资源建设、数据中心建设、资源语义化组织和软件工具开发等）和服务实践（科学信息开放共享服务、公共信息服务、数据管理服务、开放教育服务、新媒体及移动服务等）。[结果/结论]美国国立医学图书馆从政策引导、资源基础、平台支撑、服务方式、服务途径5个角度很好地践行了开放科学的发展要求。研究型图书馆应逐渐由信息资源中心向数据中心转变,从战略决策、开放获取平台建设、数据中心建设、软件工具开发等角度来推动开放科学发展。 相似文献

This paper investigates how information resources are shared electronically between libraries at the national level in China. It examines the digital library project related issues for both information policy and information-technology. Issues pertaining to information policy include co-operation and collaboration between information service providers, collection development, intellectual property protection, management and administration on the digital library projects, and public information services (user clients). Issues pertaining to information technology include use of UNICODE, metadata, interface standards (Z39·50) and others. Using a combination of system analysis and program evaluation methods, the current practice of developing a national digital library infrastructure is investigated, issues regarding national information countermeasures toward these digital library projects are studied, and suggestions for developing further nation's countermeasures in the digital library project are presented.
