This article reports the results of a survey of the provision and use of fiction in Nigerian public libraries. Evidence shows that, despite carefully framed acquisitions policy statements regarding fiction, in actual fact the public libraries allocate only a small percentage of their meagre book funds to fiction. Consequently, the fiction collections of these libraries are very small, and library clients borrow much less fiction than nonfiction. Nevertheless, Nigerian public libraries have a special interest in acquiring and promoting the reading of indigenous fiction. 相似文献

The traditional library organization for over forty years has been divided into technical services and public services. The age of automation, however, is bringing these two areas much closer together, and in some large academic libraries, the technical services librarian and the public services librarian are the same person. The work done in serials acquisitions and collection development is now available online in many libraries. Several libraries also have automated serials control and cataloging capabilities. With the advent of online access to serials, reference, interlibrary loan and library instruction services have simplified the work demands for the reference librarian. This conclusion suggests that cooperation between technical services and public services is the logical solution to provide the best possible service to the library patron. 相似文献

[目的/意义] 科学合理地评价我国各省公共图书馆发展水平,可为促进公共图书馆资源均衡配置和评估定级工作的开展提供有益的参考。[方法/过程] 从基础条件、财政支出、资源利用、民众受益4个维度构建公共图书馆发展水平评价指标体系,采用PLS结构方程模型对2012年我国31省公共图书馆的发展水平进行评价。[结果/结论] 我国公共图书馆发展水平区域差异显著,东部地区公共图书馆发展水平最优,中部地区次之,西部地区较差。运用聚类分析方法,将我国31个省区公共图书馆的发展水平分为5类。 相似文献

As a background, an attempt was made to present efforts made by different bodies and institutions in the country to automate their entire library systems. Also disclosed are the reasons why the libraries opted for automated systems, the successes achieved by some of the libraries in automating their systems, and the problems faced by the libraries who succeeded in automating some of their systems as well as those who are still in the process of doing so. Branch libraries are considered important for effective public library service to large communities. This study was aimed at investigating the administration of branch libraries in a developing country, Nigeria. A pretested mail questionnaire was used for data collection. Usable responses were received from twelve state public library services which had 66 branch libraries. The branch libraries were inadequate for the populations they were meant to serve. They were poorly funded and staffed, and had small collections. Though efforts were made to reflect the interests and needs of the branch libraries in book selection and other aspects, heads of branch libraries had inadequate administrative powers for efficient management of their units. 相似文献

[目的/意义] 近年来,公共图书馆的作用日益显著,因此需要对其效率及效率影响因素进行测评与分析,这有利于公共图书馆合理利用及配置资源。[方法/过程] 运用Super-SBM方法,对我国大陆30个省、市、自治区的公共图书馆效率进行测度,并根据测度结果对我国公共图书馆进行排序和分类;运用Tobit模型,从内外因两方面分析公共图书馆效率的影响因素,其中外因包括地区人均可支配收入、人口规模、城镇人口密度以及当地居民受教育程度,内因包括财政拨款、新增藏量购置费、专业技术人才情况、图书馆活跃度、图书馆电子化程度和公共图书馆面积。[结果/结论] 通过效率测评,将我国公共图书馆分为4类,并通过回归分析,指出我国公共图书馆存在着资金浪费、人员未能人尽其才、所举办活动质量不高等方面的问题。 相似文献

Does the medical school library in the United States operate more commonly under the university library or the medical school administration? University-connected medical school libraries were asked to indicate (a) the source of their budgets, whether from the central library or the medical school, and (b) the responsibility for their acquisitions and cataloging. Returns received from sixtyeight of the seventy eligible institutions showed decentralization to be much the most common: 71 percent of the libraries are funded by their medical schools; 79 percent are responsible for their own acquisitions and processing. The factor most often associated with centralization of both budget and operation is public ownership. Decentralization is associated with service to one or two rather than three or more professional schools. Location of the medical school in a different city from the university is highly favorable to autonomy. Other factors associated with these trends are discussed. 相似文献

One of the bedrock of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is eradication of poverty and hunger. In an attempt to actualize this goal, the role of public libraries in information provision to agricultural extension agents in Nigeria becomes paramount. This paper discusses provision of information to agricultural extension agents in a developing country. It starts with the concept of extension agents and the essence of information provision to them. It further discusses types, sources and challenges of public libraries in information provision to agricultural extension workers in a developing country. Some of the challenges are as follows: poor funding of public libraries, demotivated staff, and so on. Based on these discussions, the paper recommended adequate training and retraining of staff, adequate funding of public libraries by the federal, state and local government, the revitalization of the abandoned mobile library services among others. The paper therefore concludes that information provision to agricultural extension agents by public library is very crucial for national development. The current state of poverty, hunger and lack in Nigeria and some other African countries could be reduced to a great extent if current, relevant and up-to-date information are provided by libraries to the concerned agencies. 相似文献
