A bstract . In this essay Andrew Metcalfe and Ann Game argue that although the term "dialogue" is commonly used in educational theory, its full significance is diluted if it is seen as a matter of exchange or negotiation of prior positions and identities. As a meeting point, they argue, dialogue suspends the senses of time, space, and ontology on which identities are based. It is therefore not simply metaphorical to say that dialogue changes lives and opens minds. Using empirical material from interviews with Australian students and teachers, Metcalfe and Game draw out the relational qualities of genuine dialogue and the significance they have for how we understand everyday classroom life. 相似文献

For some eighty years, Bureaus of Jewish Education, working under a variety of names, have served the cause of Jewish education and the Jewish community. From time to time, as have all agencies of the Jewish community, the Bureaus have had to rethink their roles. Because of radical shifts in the way Jews live their lives, the nature of Jewish community, and the emergence of Jewish education as a priority, at least, in the rhetoric of Jewish life, this would appear to be such a moment. In doing so, agencies have to understand the questions and problems that are specific to their times and also revisit old questions to find new answers. An example of the former is what happens to the advocacy role of the bureau when the Federation, at least rhetorically, adopts Jewish education as a priority. An old question that, perhaps, requires new answers is “What ought to be the relationship between Bureaus of Jewish Education and denominational movements?” In this article, I wish to turn my attention to this question, and, perhaps, provide some basis for formulating policy and ideas about practice. My response cannot help but be affected by my experience as Director of the Department of Education of The United Synagogue of America but it should not be taken as the official position of The United Synagogue. 相似文献

A bstract . In this essay, Benjamin Baez and Susan Talburt analyze the U.S. Department of Education's Helping Your Child Series to consider how the government of children, families, and schools reflects a concern with two seemingly unrelated political objectives of neoliberal projects: creating responsible, self-reliant citizens and making schools more efficient. Where these two objectives converge is in their techniques: they both use the parent-child relationship and what appears to motivate it. Drawing on Michel Foucault's conceptualization of government as "the conduct of conduct," Baez and Talburt analyze two pamphlets with an eye to several themes: the "commonsensical" nature of its address to loving parents; the "responsibilization" of parents and children; the insidious entry of school goals and behavioral norms into homes; and the seeming empowerment of the parent as partner in his or her child's learning. Finally, the authors discuss how the logic of modern forms of governing families and schools might be contested. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The aging of college and university faculties mirrors general demographic trends in the United States (Administration on Aging, 2003). It also presents unique issues and challenges that reflect the work and retirement patterns of professors and the nature of academe itself (TIAA-CREF Institute, 2004). There have been major economic and policy changes of the past decade, including the uncapping or elimination of the mandatory retirement age for professors, the erosion of financial support for many public institutions of higher education, the use of more part-time and contract faculty, and the soaring costs of health care. These have all impacted college and university faculty and the institutions that they serve. Constructivism is a popular concept in contemporary teacher education programs. However, a genuine concern arises with the concept's application because many teachers and teacher educators claim that knowledge is constructed, without appreciating the epistemological and pedagogical implications such a claim entails. This article employs Phillips' (1995) analytic framework that divides the pedagogical applications of constructivism into three distinct categories: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Reviewing the constructivist epistemologies of Dewey and Vygotsky also enables the exploration of how constructivism might inform both our understanding of the impediments students confront when learning new knowledge and our understanding of general constructivist pedagogical practices. The primary objective in this article is to provide teacher educators and teachers with a richer understanding of constructivism—its limitations and its strengths—while offering concrete pedagogical strategies for its classroom application. 相似文献
