According to Lakoff et al, metaphor is the main mechanism through which we comprehend abstract concepts and perform abstract reasoning. As a great poet, Robert Frost realized the cognitive functions of metaphors and used them frequently and skillfully in his poetry. By doing so, he was able to convey abstract and philosophical reflections through simple language and enrich the theme of his poetry. This thesis conducts a survey of the definitions of metaphors and makes an analysis of the metaphors employed by Frost in his poetry, trying to answer two questions: 1) How does the use of metaphor help to convey the poet’s abstract and profound philosophical reflections? 2) How does the use of metaphor help to enrich the themes of Frost’s poetry? 相似文献

This paper contrastively studies the generic structures of sixty abstracts from English teaching and learning journals written by Chinese writers and English native writers.Analysis of the data is based on Swales’ IMRD(Introduction-Method-Result-Discussion) model and all the data are coded through SPSS.Result indicates 1) English natives tend to write longer than Chinese.2) The rhetorical structure of the abstract tends to be more complete in the international journals.3) English natives tend to write more about the background details while the Chinese natives focus more on the result explanation.It is hoped that this comparison would shed some lights on abstract writing for Chinese writers. 相似文献

It intends to explore characteristics of Chinese undergraduate students’ English abstract by analyzing the most common problemsoccurred in their writing. Some tentative strategies are also provided accordingly to improve the current situation. Corpus approach isadopted to examine the length, structure and linguistic feature of selected abstracts and a statistical interpretation is also given. As a particular genre,Abstract is a growing field of study in linguistics. Move analysis is one aspect that has conducted to describe RA abstract. This article analyzed the particular genre with the purpose of helping them work out good abstracts for academic writing to improve their ability of doing research. One hundred abstracts were selected randomly from all the 450 graduation papers written by Eng lish-major pre-service teachers in 2010 in Hunan First Normal University in China. These informative abstracts were analyzed with the framework of Hyland’s 2000 Model. The results revealed that these English-major pre-service teachers haven’t done well in the abstract writing for their graduation paper, most of whom have no good understanding about the move model and move sequence, which impli cates that explicit introduction of terms of genre, move and move sequence etc., and training on how to write good abstracts in future study are really needed. 相似文献
