This article reviews the work of Jong-Hsiang Yang in science education and his efforts in creating a research culture in Taiwan.
Following in Yang’s footprints, the rebuilding of science education, implementing a new science curriculum, and gaining the
academic status of science education, we go through the important years of the development of science education in Taiwan.
His leadership in introducing interpretive research methods and expanding international studies catalyzed profound changes
to science education research in Taiwan.

The article explores the role of immigrant parents in middle school science as both teachers and learners as part of an urban
middle school curriculum, the Linking in Food and the Environment (LiFE) program. The curriculum engaged parents as partners
with science teachers to teach science through food. Over a 2-year period, parents attended a series of bilingual workshops,
collaborated with classroom teachers, managed activities, guided student inquiry, and assisted in classroom management. The
following study analyzes the role of culture, language, and identity as four mothers navigated their position as ‘insiders’
in a science classroom.

In this article, we concentrate upon the lifeworld resources that comprise the funds of knowledge for children living in a
rural community in the southeastern United States. Through interview conversations with a group of third grade children, we
identified three lifeworld resources—interdependence, garbage dumping, and feral dogs—that rural teachers might draw on to
generate curriculum that is connected to the community in which they teach. Through such connections rural teachers may increase
the likelihood that they will remain teaching in rural schools.

We engage in a metalogue based on eight papers in this issue of Cultural Studies of Science Education that review the state of conceptual change research and its possible affect on the teaching and learning of science. Our
discussion addresses three aspects of conceptual change research: theoretical, methodological, and practical, as we discuss
conceptual change research in light of our experiences as science educators. Finally, we examine the implications of conceptual
change research for the teachers and students with whom we work.

Since many teachers and students recognize other kinds of knowledge (faith) based on other ways of knowing, consideration
of these realities is appropriate for the science education community. Understanding the multitude of ways that clergy view
relationships between science and faith (i.e. alternative ways of knowing) would assist in understanding various ways that
people address complex issues arising from ideas about science and faith. We administered a questionnaire composed of multiple-choice
and short answer items to 63 United Methodist ministers. Findings included (1) that formal, organized faith contexts (e.g.
church services) serve as informal science education opportunities, (2) participants demonstrated considerable diversity regarding
the types of relationships developed between science and faith, and (3) participants recognized a need exists for better understandings
of science and its relationship to faith for them, their colleagues, and their congregations.

In this article, we describe the results of a study of chemistry high school teachers’ beliefs (N = 7) of the chemistry curriculum and their roles, their beliefs on the teacher as developer of materials, and their beliefs
about professional development. Teachers’ beliefs influence the implementation of a curriculum. We view the use of a new curriculum
as a learning process, which should start at teachers’ prior knowledge and beliefs. The results reveal that it is possible
to develop a new curriculum in which teachers’ beliefs are taken as a starting point. Promising approaches to prepare teachers
for a new curriculum is to let them (co)develop and use curriculum materials: It creates ownership, and strengthens and develops
teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK).

This article examines Mary Budd Rowe’s groundbreaking and far-reaching contributions to science education. Rowe is best known
for her research on wait-time: the idea that teachers can improve the quality and length of classroom discussions by waiting
at least 3 s before and after student responses. Her wait-time research grew from and helped inform her staunch advocacy of
science education as inquiry; Rowe saw wonder and excitement as central to the teaching and learning of science. She spent
much of her professional life designing professional development experiences and innovative curriculum materials to help teachers,
particularly elementary school teachers, enact inquiry in their classrooms.

This commentary first summarizes and discusses the analysis of the two translation processes described in the Oliveira, Colak,
and Akerson article and the inferences these researchers make based on their research. In the second part of the commentary,
we describe procedures and criteria used in adapting tests into different languages and how they may apply to adaptation of
instructional materials. The authors provide a good theoretical analysis of what took place in two translation instances and
make an important contribution by taking the first step in providing a systematic discussion of adaptation of instructional
materials. Our discussion proposes procedures for adapting instructional materials for examining equivalence of source and
target versions of adapted instructional materials. We highlight that many of the procedures and criteria used in examining
comparability of educational tests is missing in this emerging research of area.

A recent survey of studies [Tenopir, Hitchcock, & Pillow (2003). Use and users of electronic library resources: An overview and analysis of recent research studies. Washington, DC: Council on Library and Information Resources.] concluded “both faculty and students use and like electronic resources and most readily adopt them if the sources are perceived as convenient, relevant, and time saving to their natural workflow” (p. iv). However, the results of access studies show that actual use of online content is relatively low. This is because navigation to the online content in these various collections is not convenient, requires multiple steps in order to reach relevant content, and is not integrated into a student's natural workflow. In our research, we have designed, implemented, deployed, and evaluated a method for making content available to students that targets the content to their current need.

In this essay, we state that establishing technology curricula by national governments causes a shift in the policy actions
of educational technology support: from a technical rationale with a main focus on funding and resources to a pedagogical
rationale with a main focus on student competencies. We illustrate our point of view by describing the formal educational
technology curriculum recently administered by the government in Flanders. This curriculum is written in terms of attainment
targets and has clear implications on the nature of educational technology which is no longer dependent on teachers’ individual
efforts or willingness, but is becoming compulsory at the school level. Furthermore, we present two levers that facilitate
the integration process of educational technology in general and the realization of technology curricula in particular. Technology
coordinators should act more as curriculum managers and change agents, and schools should jointly establish a technology policy
plan.

This paper demonstrates a formal statistical test that can be used to help researchers make decisions about alternative statistical
model specifications. This test is commonly used by researchers who would like to test whether adding new variables to a model
improves the model fit. However, we demonstrate that this formal test can also be employed when alternative representations
of variables or constructs are considered for inclusion in a regression. An empirical example is provided using information
from a widely cited US Department of Education report. Substantively, we find evidence that an alternative representation
of an important policy variable would have been a better fit to the data than the index that was used in the analysis conducted
in the report.

Faculty experiences of innovative approaches to learning and the changes to their knowledge emerging from such experiences
constitute an important area of inquiry that has to date largely been ignored or has been approached with research methods
ill-suited to examining such experiences. This paper adopts interpretative meta-ethnography as its research framework to investigate
the changes to faculty knowledge that occur when they adopt problem-based learning (PBL). The paper presents themes that emerged
through the analysis and argues for future inquiry.

Program assessments are an essential part of the ongoing survival of teaching centers performed by faculty development personnel
at institutions of higher education. Little research is available to guide developers in performing these assessments. In
this article we describe assessments conducted at three Canadian universities and highlight the theoretical models used to
guide the process. Reflections on the strengths and challenges are discussed for each program assessment for the purpose of
assisting faculty developers in performing similar program assessments of their faculty development offices.

imitative reasoning and the lack of creative mathematical reasoning found in empirical data. By relating reasoning to thinking
