people' perception, evaluation and attitude are different among races,so there is cultural--difference.And vocabulary, especially culture-loaded words, can reflect this kind of difference when it relates to values, religions, life styles and stereotypes, while the ordinary words, such as “book, pen” etc, always only have the perceptive meaning. For example, when a child from the Anglo-American world learns the word “dog”,he will normally learns the cultural meaning of it: the dog is “man's best friend”,and he will like dogs,as the saying “love me,love my dog”.But a child brought up in the Chinese culture would be taught that the dog is a dirty and dangerous animal. So people who have been initiated into the culture which is associated with their mother tongue, are naturally inclined to interpret things with their own culture fervencies. As with teaching, teachers should not just make students master language points and grammars, but also irrigate the culture background of English and Chinese words.  相似文献

Introduction "How can we enlarge the students' vocabulary?" This is a very essential problem in the teaching of Enslish as a foreign language for non-English majors in our college. Firstly, their English level is low, They are not only lack of linguistic patterns, grammar rules, but also vocabulary, Secondly, they have only three hours of intensive reading every week, They should pass 2-grade college English examination through two years studying of English. Thirdly, botn the teachers and students are in very passive position in English language teaching and learning. Almost every lesson begins with vocabulary, then text reading comprehension, and exercises, which based on the traditional method.  相似文献

It is of great importance to obtain good collocation knowledge for fluent and appropriate language use as many words are used in a limited set of collocations. Studies on cognitive linguistics show that cognitive factors play an important role in collocation study as most collocations are metaphorically motivated, and that collocational behavior is influenced by a number of factors, including the semantics of the individual items themselves, the influence of other well-established meanings, the influence of metaphor, the influence of semantic prosody, etc.. Therefore, it is significant to explain and teach certain types of collocations in language teaching by considering the underlying factors which influence the collocational process. Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners have some special collocation problems in their English learning, which not only result from grammatical incompetence, but also from their lack of conceptual fluency and metaphor competence. The disclosure of similarities and differences between the conceptual systems of English and Chinese will help to illuminate the nature of negative transfer of their first language in collocation acquisition of Chinese EFL learners. The author of the paper, by disclosing the interaction between collocation and metaphor from cognitive, linguistic, and social perspectives, proposes semantic-oriented principle, pragmatics-oriented principle, and culture-oriented principle to incorporate cognitive factors to collocation teaching. It is suggested that stress should be given to the teaching of conceptual metaphor and its mechanisms in collocation teaching before students can finally improve collocation competence with a focus on metaphor awareness.  相似文献

Vocabulary acquisition is increasingly viewed as crucial to language acquisition.Meanwhile, learning vocabulary is often perceived as a tedious and laborious process.Chinese students usually feel bored in vocabulary lessons because they have not changed their learning habits, such as writing word on paper, trying to learn by heart. To help students find vocabulary lessons more interesting,we can use games. This paper analyses the traditional method of teaching vocabulary is not effective, whereas there are some advantages of using games, such as,games bring in fun, games are motivating and create context for language use and then gives two examples of applying games in my vocabulary teaching.Students prefer games and puzzles.Games motivate and entertain students but also help them memorize and recall the material easily. The conclusion is that learning vocabulary through the games is an effective and interesting means which should be used in any classrooms.  相似文献

Computer simulation of active suspension based on the full-vehicle model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The current method to solve the problem of active suspension control for a vehicle is often dealt with a quarter-car or half-car model. But it is not enough to use this kind of model for practical applications. In this paper, based on considering the influence of factors such as,seat and passengers a MDOF(multi-degree-of-freedom)model describing the vehicle motion is set up.The MODF model, which is 8DOF of four independent suspensions and four wheel tracks,is more applicable by comparison of its analysis result with some conventional vehicle models. Therefore,it is more suitable to use the 8DOF full-car model than a conventional 4DOF half-car model in the active control design for car vibration.Based on the derived 8DOF odel,a controller is designed by using LQ(linear quadratic)control theory, and the appropriate control scheme is selected by testing various performance indexes.Computer simulation 8is carried out for a passenger car running on a road with step disturbance and random road disturbance expressed by Power Spectral Density(PSD).Vibrations corresponding to ride comfort are derived under the foregoing road disturbances. The response results for uncontrolled and controlled system are compared. The response of vehicle vibration is greatly suppressed and quickly damped.which testifies the effect of the active suspenson. The results achieved for various controllers are compared to invesigate the influence of different control schemes on the control effect.  相似文献

Languages convey cultural information while they are used as tools to communicate. With the development of human society and the frequencies of intercultural communication, cultural differences may impact on people’s normal communications.Cultural differences between English and Chinese appear in many aspects of languages.Animal words are influenced by such cultural factors as geographical conditions, historical developments, traditional customs, mythology and fables, etc. So they are endowed with abundant cultural connotations.A similar animal word may have different connotative meanings in English and Chinese respectively, but sometimes different animal words have the same connotations.Whether they are different or not will reflect cultural differences between Chinese and English. Thus, through illustration, classification and comparison of English and Chinese animal words, the thesis aims to explore the cultural differences between English and Chinese. What’s more, the thesis aims to help English learns have a better understanding of English culture and develop the abilities of English language study.  相似文献

As one of the major individual learner differences in second language learning, motivation is frequently used to account for differential success in learning a foreign language. When comes to the definition of motivation,Ellis(2006:537) primarily defines motivation is "the effort learners were prepared to make to learn a language and their persistence in learning." According to Dornyei(2001a:8) motivation is The choice of a particular action, the persistence with it,the effort expended on it.In other words, motivation is responsible for why people decide to do something, how long they are willing to sustain the activity, how hard they are going to pursue it.  相似文献

The Holy Bible,as one of major sources of Western Culture, has a great influence on the Christian culture and Christian thoughts.Because language is a carrier of culture, the English study will be water without a source and a tree without roots if we ignore The Holy Bible which is the core of Christianity. To study English demands not only grammar and vocabulary, but also the culture behind the language.A brief analysis of connotative meanings of color terms, which are influenced by The Holy Bible and applied in literatures, will be given,in order to offer some help to English learners to know the connotations of color terms better,to understand literatures more profoundly and to have a general feeling about the impact which The Holy Bible has on language.  相似文献

It is known that the IELTS test has not been a good predictor of English capability in academic settings. More information is required. Are students not motivated to keep improving their English; what obstacles do they face? The English language issues facing international students from China at one University are explored through a survey and focus groups. It is observed that a lack of motivation is not the key factor. Rather one core problem is the very difficult demands of acculturation within a short time frame which would enable confidence for the students to continue to engage with other English speaking students. When faced with such immediate and hard to achieve acculturation, many retreat to their language groups. In the academic context, support for the transition to discipline based academic genres is double difficult as the time frame for second language learners is longer, but performance requirements are more immediate. Many first language students also have difficulties in this area, but have the easier language path to mastery. The study draws usefully on a comparison made with students studying English in China.  相似文献

Semantics, the study of meaning,is closely connected with translation, the practice of transferring meaning. The paper uses a lot of examples based on real translation practice to prove that semantics plays a very important role in translation practice.Understanding and making good use of semantic relations, including synonymy, polysemy, homonymy and antonymy, are quite important for a translator to deal with some complicated semantic problems in translation practice. The paper also discusses the concept of denotative and connotative meanings, two basic types of meaning in Semantics.Denotation means the literal meaning of a word which is given in dictionaries;and connotation, the associative and suggestive meanings of a word in its context.Be cause of cultural difference, words with the same denotations may have totally different connotations, which is why the concept of denotation and connotation plays a very important role in English/Chinese translation. In order to translate a text into another language correctly, translator must totally understand the meaning of the original word, both denotative and connotative mean ing,and be aware of the potential connotations of the word in the target language.  相似文献

A Rose for Emily is the masterpiece of William Faulkner, who is regarded as the founder of Southern literature. The Fall of the House of Usher is one of the most popular short stories written by the great American writer Edgar Allan Poe. They have common ends that the main characters of the two novels—Emily and Usher are all destruction of their unbalanced personality. This thesis will set a new point from a branch view of psychology—personality psychology to analyze the two characters Emily and Usher, how they change from pathological personality to abnormal personality, and finally destruct from flesh to soul. The deep meaning is to announce the human inner world will distract by the outside world.  相似文献

Jef Verschueren is the representative of European Continental pragmatic thought. He puts forward a new theory that pragmatics is a perspective on language and he uses the theory of adaptation to analyze pragmatics."The general concern for the study of linguistic pragmatics is to understand the meaningful functioning of a language as a dynamic process operating on context-structure relationships at various levels of salience"(Verschuren 2000:69).The focal points in contexts are the utterer and the interpreter, for the physical, social and mental aspects of contexts are activated by language users’cognitive processes.Verschueren divided interpreter’s roles into five types:addressee, side participant,bystander,listener-in and eavesdropper, which can explain the adaptation of context and language choices. This is also applicable in college English classroom as the English class is also a context. At present students taught at the same time by the same teacher do not master the knowledge at the same level. One of the reason is that students are not engaged in the class at the same level.According to the Verschueren’s theory, the best English teaching class is one that each student in the addressee of teachers.Addressee is a metaphor which means everyone should follow the teachers’explanation carefully and take part in the teaching activities. It has something to do with interaction theory, which considers students as active individuals but not passive receivers. One of the common interaction patterns is questioning. In this thesis, the question how to make students addresses through adoption of questioning approach in college English class will be researched.  相似文献

Motivation deals with the connection between word symbol and its sense. Motivated words are the words that can be described as motivated, that is, a direct connection between the symbol and its sense can be easily observed. Non-motivated words refer to the words that can't be explained as motivated, and there is no direct relation between the structure of a word and its mean-  相似文献

In recent years, with the renewal of English textbooks of all levels, the traditional grammar-translation method is out-of-date in the EFL class. In order to meet the challenges of our age, more and more teachers have cast their eyes on the communicative use of language, which compels them to create opportunities for genuine interaction in the classroom.Interaction, according to Brown(1980,p.159),is "the collaborative exchange of thoughts, feelings,or ideas between two or more people resulting in a reciprocal effect on each other." As the core of communication, interaction is a very important word for current language teachers, who are responsible for providing the stimuli for continued interaction in the era of communicative language teaching. The significance of interaction in EFL class mainly lies in its contribution to the active teaching of grammar, the initiating of students’ intrinsic motivation and the improving of their communicative competence(c.c.).In this article,I will elaborate on why and how I initiate interaction by providing a 100-minute lesson plan in an attempt to connect theory with practice.  相似文献

When examined carefully, it is seen that there is not an available and detailed cttrriculum designed for the aim of foreign language teaching with integrated cultural items of the target language in the programs of the schools under authority of the Ministry of Education and Turkish higher education institutions. In recent years, the specialists have an agreement on the issue that foreign language instruction should be carried out by the means of target language's history, literature, geography and also its social characteristics. The idiom "it's raining cats and dogs" can be misinterpreted by a Turkish student without the knowledge of this idiom's story in English history as "Cats and dogs are pouring down from the sky". An important French architectural building "Saint Mary Cathedral, Notre Dame de Paris" can be misunderstood as "Our Parisian Woman" by a student who is unfamiliar with French culture. Both examples show that encountered foreign words and phrases can be misunderstood and mostly these words are perceived and interpreted according to learners' own cultural figures. The aims of this study are to show the significance of culture-based foreign language courses and to make a contribution to the literature by regarding the views of researchers beheving that culture and language are inseparable concepts. In this context, Erzincan University French Language Teaching Department students' opinions on the relation between culture and language learning were received with the application of qualitative structured written response method. Then, document analysis of written comments was evaluated. Consequently, the analysis on the participants' written comments showed that a culture integrated foreign language course can make positive contributions to students' learning, language learning process and learning environment.  相似文献

Language and culture are intrinsically interconnected and interactive with each other. On one hand, language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it:language expresses, embodies and symbolizes cultural reality. On the other, language is influenced and shaped by culture;it reflects culture. This kind of relationship of language and culture is indispensible, which is clearly reflected in and especially ture with their play of roles in communication.Through the overviews of language and culture, and based on the case studies of three types of communication(cross-cultural,intercultural and multicultural communication),this article is aimed at discussing the relationship of language and culture in detail from the perspective of communication, and further explain and prove the importance of language and culture in successful communication.  相似文献

Language has changed greatly in the information age. Linguistic changes markedly reflect on the lexical aspects, for words are the most active factors in language. Netspeak is a kind of special language which is between spoken language and written language. Essentially, as a social variance of the modem language, it changes with the type or style of the language depending on the differences of the language carriers. It is an identity denotation for surfers on the Internet and a medium or tool for them to challenge traditions. This paper analyses the features and word-formation of netspeak. We can have a better understanding of netspeak in the new era with an understanding of the knowledge of lexical changes and word-formation.  相似文献
