Modern mathematics, and modern science in general, was embraced enthusiastically in the Indian subcontinent quite early, thanks to a large extent to the tradition of learning going back to the ancient times. By the early decades of the 20th century the Indian mathematical community had made important research contributions in diverse areas of mathematics, including number theory, real and complex analysis, diffrential geometry, diffrential equations, algebra, combinatorial mathematics and applied mathematics. Interaction with world leaders in the field, reforms in the educational system, establishment of societies for actively pursuing study and discussion of mathematics, publication of mathematical journals, were some of the major progressive steps taken. Apart from the indigenous leadership, participation of a few enlightened foreigners in the process also paved the way for the advancement of the subject in the country. We recount here the story of the early developments of the mathematical scene in India, and of the various players involved. 相似文献

To be associated with an important and challenging activity that is being carried out for the first time in the country is
a truly memorable and satisfying, even if somewhat disquieting experience. I was privileged enough to have this opportunity
when I was involved in the design and implementation of India’s first computer. TIFRAC (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research
Automatic Calculator) — so was it named by Jawaharlal Nehru when it was formally commissioned in 1960 — was a truly a unique
computer. Some of the features of this machine are described later in this article. It is also my intention in this article
to convey some of the excitement, adventure and sense of accomplishment that the successful completion of this exercise brought
to the design team. 相似文献

India is one of the most water stressed countries in the world. However, despite appreciable increase in funding for water research, high quality science that is usable by stakeholders remains elusive. I argue that this can be attributed to the absence of research on questions that actually matter to stakeholders, unwillingness to transcend disciplinary boundaries, and the demise of fleld-work research culture in favour of computer simulation.Conventional wisdom is these trends are driven by what is publishable. However, there is an increasing interest in the international community in interdisciplinary, problem driven, empirical research. Using examples of my own research in Chennai and Bengaluru, on water scarcity in urbanising watersheds, I offer some methods and insights. 相似文献

Takayasu’s arteritis (TA), also known as the “pulseless disease,” is a chronic vasculitis of the aorta and aortic branches.
TA with Crohn’s disease is rare and has not been documented in China before. In this paper we report on a case of Takayasu’s
arteritis associated with concurrent Crohn’s disease. A 17-year-old Chinese male developed upper limb sourness and a sensation
of fatigue, and his upper limb pulses were absent. He was diagnosed with TA and underwent an axillary artery bypass with autologous
great saphenous vein on the left subclavian artery. After the surgery, he regained the normal blood pressure. This patient
also had years of diarrhea and developed an anal canal ulcer, and was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and ulcerative
colitis before. Five months after the TA surgery, he was hospitalized for severe stomachache and diarrhea and was finally
diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. The possible pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for concurrent existence of TA and
Crohn’s disease may be associated with immune disorders, especially autoimmunity.

The combinatorial problem discussed in this article is very simple to state but needs the algebraic machinery of characters of abelian groups. 相似文献

Deleuze’s children 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Anna Catherine Hickey-Moody 《Educational Philosophy and Theory》2013,45(3):272-286
Children, the image of the child, and the gendered figures of the girl and the boy are thematics that run through the work of Deleuze and feature prominently in his joint writing with Guattari. However, there are many different children in Deleuze’s writings. Various child figures do distinct things in Deleuze’s work. In this article, I argue that his work on children can be utilized to rethink popular, teleological notions of childhood and ‘growing up’. 相似文献

This is discussion of one of Leo Tolstoy’s fictional dramatisations of aggressive but dull-witted pedagogy. In Anna Karenina, two adults badger a lively, deep-souled, active-minded boy, Anna’s son Seryozha, to learn his rote-lessons. 相似文献

Building on work by Fermat and Huygens, Hamilton transformed the study of geometrical optics in his very first paper, presented when still in his teens. His ‘characteristic function’ was an analytical way to describe wavefronts, and in his hands a powerful tool to look at families of rays rather than isolated ones. His prediction of internal and external conical refraction in some crystals and its spectacular verification in a few months established his reputation among his contemporaries. This formulation of optics uncovered many general properties, not easy to see in the conventional method of tracing individual rays. The deepest outcome of his early optical work was a parallel view of the mechanics of particles, which played a fundamental role in the birth of quantum mechanics and continues to be the standard framework for classical mechanics up to the present time. 相似文献

Who gave birth to me 14 years ago. Of course, my mother. My grandma often tells me when I was just born, I looked so small and thin, only nearly 5 Chinese pounds. So doctors put me into a warm box for weeks. My mother came to see me everyday although she was weak. I can't feel my mother's love at that time but I can feel it from my grandma's words. I was so thin and small when I was a baby, so I was always ill in my childhood. A day of my sixth year, I didn't feel well and had a stomac… 相似文献
