Abstract

Librarians with an interest in electronic reserves were, for the most part, disappointed by The Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization Act (TEACH Act). The Act provided classroom instructors with relatively clear guidelines as how they could use copyrighted materials online classes without violating the law. Mention of libraries, however, was conspicuously absent and the Act offered no direct guidance for what sort of library materials could be placed on the Internet. The guidance it offers though is more indirect. It gives some sense of how the legislative branch views the rights and responsibilities of educators in the use of online materials. It will offer guidance to the judiciary when, inevitably, a copyright dispute involving electronic reserves ever goes to court. It is important that librarians understand the TEACH Act and what it meansto education.  相似文献

SUMMARY

At Rutgers University Libraries, the traditional reserve collection has migrated to a paperless electronic reserve service. To justify the change, Library Staff used two methodologies: a user survey and an analysis of reserve collections broken down by location and format, with circulation figures for each category. This change was made in stages; electronic reserves went to a digital only service. Librarians at Rutgers University are using electronic reserve services to gain experience with digital collections, homegrown and commercial databases, collections for distance education, and materials and services to remote users. In this paper we also look at some of the factors affecting academic reserve operations.  相似文献

Abstract

Assessment is an important part of any library service, including electronic reserves. This paper describes the assessment of electronic reserves services by means of a survey instrument administered at the University of Colorado, Boulder during the fall semester, 2003. As the University Libraries had moved from a predominately paper reserves environment to an almost completely electronic reserves environment at the beginning of that same semester, the survey offered a unique opportunity to compare student attitudes towards the two formats. We addressed planning for the survey, administering the survey, evaluation of the collected data, and reporting the results to teaching faculty.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The St. Lucie West Library, also known as the FAU Treasure Coast Campus Library, is a joint-use library facility, with Florida Atlantic University partnering with Indian River Community College and the St. Lucie County (FL) Library System. This article will discuss the circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, and collection management services of the three partners, as well as the training of new employees in this joint-use venture and the methods of managing the St. Lucie West Library. A list of suggestions for improving present and future joint-use libraries is included.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Jacksonville State University's Cole Library implemented electronic course reserves in 2002. As with any new service, a marketing plan was prepared to ensure success. This article details the methods used to market the new service to the faculty and students at JSU. Included is a discussion of some unexpected benefits of the marketing effort and how to address resistance to the change from a traditional print service to an electronic service. This article will help fill a gap in the literature by describing one library's attempt at marketing electronic reserves to ensure a smooth transition from traditional reserves to electronic.  相似文献

SUMMARY

In 2004, the Binghamton University Libraries created a task force to explore the possibility of providing access to electronic reserves through the newly available Blackboard Content System?. The Content System is used to collect, manage, and publish content in Blackboard. The task force used a psychology course to pilot the Content System for reserve material after the class professor assigned “Course Builder” privileges to the reserves staff.

Preliminary findings of the pilot study suggest that using Blackboard for course reserves allows library resources to be better integrated into academic course work. The task force plans to continue their investigation into using Blackboard for course reserves. Challenges that need to be addressed in this investigation include the issue of requiring Course Builder privileges for each course, gathering and managing statistics, and the management of documents saved in the Content System.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This presents the experience at Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries in developing a pilot project proposal for electronic reserves. The proposal served as the blueprint for planning as well as gaining the support of the library administration and library staff by discussing goals, scope, intellectual property management, budget, and timetable. Implementation of the proposal provided opportunities to identified obstacles and solutions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the 1990s, electronic reserves services rapidly developed in academic libraries following the emergence of the Internet, particularly the World Wide Web, as an information delivery tool. Because similar technologies are used to develop and access digital libraries and electronic reserves, the implications for the evaluation of electronic reserves go beyond traditional service satisfaction levels. User responses to electronic reserves are an indicator of the acceptance and technical challenges of digital libraries. As we examine user reactions, inferences can be made on such topics as user technical skills, institutional networking infrastructure and the electronic communication process in instruction. These inferences give us greater insights into the future use, satisfaction level and technical demands in the use of digital libraries.  相似文献

Abstract

The Library's Circulation Department at Colorado State University-Pueblo began using Docutek's ERes system on a limited basis during fall semester 2002. The nuts and bolts of implementing the ERes system were relatively simple compared to the challenge of revising our reserves policy to accommodate electronic reserves. While the staff realized the necessity of tightening up lax practices that become more glaring in electronic format, convincing the university community proved more challenging.  相似文献

Abstract

Distance Learning Library Services at the University of Kentucky provided an electronic reserves service as a pilot project for distance learning courses in the 2000–01 academic year. Distance Learning Programs, which is a part of the Distance Learning Technology Center, funded the project. Policies and procedures were formulated, an account was set up with the Copyright Clearance Center, and the service was marketed. Our first electronic reserves were available for the Fall 2000 semester.  相似文献

Abstract

After years of minimal electronic reserve use at the University of California, Irvine Libraries, a combination of opportunity, hard work and luck has made electronic reserves the central part of reserves as a whole. Reviewing the time from January 2003 to June 2004, this paper discusses the many different factors and circumstances that resulted in this change, including advantages resulting from software updates and resultant reorganization of workflow, as well as reflecting on where the Libraries would like to go next.  相似文献

Abstract

Health sciences libraries are expanding services that use online technologies to support teaching, research, and clinical care needs. Saint Louis University's Health Sciences Center (SLU HSC) Library has developed strong, user-centered, online services in interlibrary loan, bibliographic instruction, and electronic reserves. The authors present their successful experiences in using electronic technologies to improve library services.

Journal articles are provided, often the same day as requested through interlibrary loan, and delivered in electronic format using OCLC's ILLiad program. First-year SLU medical students now complete a self-paced, all online, Health Information Resources course that targets the most relevant biomedical resources, reduces student study time, and is viewed as a model for the entire curriculum. ERes, the electronic reserves program, allows faculty to provide course materials that are accessible at the convenience of students 24 hours a day. These online programs are examples of using electronic technologies to better support user needs for excellent library services.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Electronic reserves are being offered at colleges and Universities across the country creating an opportunity for collaboration between the library units of academic libraries. Library units with course reserves in medium and large academic libraries can capitalize on the benefits working with a centralized scanning unit, thus consolidating the scanning process of electronic reserves processing. The cooperation between library units to provide better service results in a positive relationship between course instructors, students, and the library.  相似文献

Abstract

This panel discussed various options and subsequent implications for the management of full-text electronic journal resources. Librarians, commercial vendors, aggregators, and integrated library system representatives shared different perspectives on this rapidly evolving area. It became apparent that regardless of the needs and resources of an institution, viable e-journal management alternatives are available that could address a wide range of functionality and budgetary commitments.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Born of the confluence of the traditional library and emerging technologies, Electronic Reserves offers a unique opportunity that we dare not pass. This paper will provide that opportunity by examining the growth of the Electronic reserves program at LSU, thereby bringing into focus certain trends which may affect both the future and development, perhaps even the survival, of electronic reserves. Further, the very evaluation process presented will provide a blueprint for the development and application of tools that can be readily incorporated into other local electronic reserve programs for effective evaluation.  相似文献
