Abstract

This paper focuses on the outreach to over 3,000 students taking classes at over 80 locations within the State of Maine, as well as students taking classes nationally via the Web through the University of Maine System Network (UNE1). The discussion will briefly note the wide range of collections and services available through the University of Maine System's digital library and the Off-Campus Library Services Office. In particular, the discussion will center on reserve services for students at remote locations, using traditional paper copies and particularly electronic reserves, and the copyright issues that surround the e-reserve service.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the 1990s, electronic reserves services rapidly developed in academic libraries following the emergence of the Internet, particularly the World Wide Web, as an information delivery tool. Because similar technologies are used to develop and access digital libraries and electronic reserves, the implications for the evaluation of electronic reserves go beyond traditional service satisfaction levels. User responses to electronic reserves are an indicator of the acceptance and technical challenges of digital libraries. As we examine user reactions, inferences can be made on such topics as user technical skills, institutional networking infrastructure and the electronic communication process in instruction. These inferences give us greater insights into the future use, satisfaction level and technical demands in the use of digital libraries.  相似文献

The Rodgers Science and Engineering Library which serves students, faculty and researchers in the fields of science, engineering and nursing at the University of Alabama abandoned centralized scanning of electronic reserve materials and moved to branch library scanning in 2003. This article is about how the Library handled the transition in terms of management issues such as planning, executing, training, supervising, monitoring quality and promoting the remote service to faculty and students.  相似文献

Abstract

Assessment is an important part of any library service, including electronic reserves. This paper describes the assessment of electronic reserves services by means of a survey instrument administered at the University of Colorado, Boulder during the fall semester, 2003. As the University Libraries had moved from a predominately paper reserves environment to an almost completely electronic reserves environment at the beginning of that same semester, the survey offered a unique opportunity to compare student attitudes towards the two formats. We addressed planning for the survey, administering the survey, evaluation of the collected data, and reporting the results to teaching faculty.  相似文献

After years of minimal electronic reserve use at the University of California, Irvine Libraries, a combination of opportunity, hard work and luck has made electronic reserves the central part of reserves as a whole. Reviewing the time from January 2003 to June 2004, this paper discusses the many different factors and circumstances that resulted in this change, including advantages resulting from software updates and resultant reorganization of workflow, as well as reflecting on where the Libraries would like to go next.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The integration of electronic reserve at Columbia University with its Library Management System and the University's Course Management System was made possible due to a favorable authentication infrastructure and the consistent use of standard course designations in each system. The streamlining of electronic reserve processing was an important factor in the successful implementation of electronic reserve at the university. The use of an electronic reserve link resolver which facilitates the consistent generation of use statistics, ‘fair use’ copyright compliance, and the generation of proxied links to IP restricted resources was also important.  相似文献

Abstract

Implementing any new service or technology can require a process of trial and error. Often, it is useful to introduce the service as a pilot project, so that the staffing issues and technical details can be worked out prior to fullscale implementation. This is especially important at times when staffing and/or budgetary circumstances are uncertain. Doing so can give the library the ability to test technologies and assess the staffing and procedural impacts of a new service, and to make necessary adjustments in the process. At Christopher Newport University, that was the approach taken to implementing electronic reserves services.  相似文献

As we move into an era in which an increasing amount of information is available in digital form and more universities and colleges are providing distance education courses, electronic course reserves are becoming an essential part of library services. The Digital Reading Room (DRR), an Athabasca University collaboratively developed e-reserves system, facilitates immediate student access to faculty selected, course specific resources in a variety of media and promotes increased use of electronic information resources. Implementation of electronic reserves in academic libraries represents one of the most important advances in libraries for patrons in many years. Some academic libraries offer faculty peace of mind by assuming responsibility for copyright clearance for electronic reserve services. Libraries have the specialized equipment to scan and edit files to make them readable and easily downloaded by students. Libraries also have sufficient electronic storage to hold scanned material for future semesters. This paper examines how electronic reserves are managed in a large academic library system. The short history behind electronic reserves at Pennsylvania State University Libraries and the procedures associated with creating and maintaining the reserve system, will be considered, as well as offering a statistical assessment of how electronic reserves have affected the other services of the University Libraries. Finally, issues surrounding electronic reserves, fair use, copyright and Pennsylvania State University Libraries' procedures will be explored.  相似文献

SUMMARY

This article examines what is implied by the term “trusted” in the phrase “trusted digital repositories.” Digital repositories should be able to preserve electronic materials for periods at least comparable to existing preservation methods. Our collective lack of experience with preserving digital objects and consensus about the reliability of our technological infrastructure raises questions about how we should proceed with digital-based preservation practices, an emerging role for academic libraries and archival institutions. This article reviews issues relating to building a trusted digital repository, highlighting some of the issues raised and possible solutions proposed by the authors in their work of implementing and acculturating a digital repository at Rutgers University Libraries.  相似文献

Jacksonville State University's Cole Library implemented electronic course reserves in 2002. As with any new service, a marketing plan was prepared to ensure success. This article details the methods used to market the new service to the faculty and students at JSU. Included is a discussion of some unexpected benefits of the marketing effort and how to address resistance to the change from a traditional print service to an electronic service. The following is a cost comparison of students photocopying print reserve readings for a typical college course versus printing out hard copies of the same articles if they are offered as electronic reserves at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The prices quoted were taken from the website of a major office supply company the week of December 19. ABSTRACT

The article presents a case study of Empire Express, a resource sharing network among the libraries of the State University of New York (SUNY) University Centers at Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook, along with Syracuse University. The network involves an expedited interlibrary loan service, in which requests and documents are transmitted via Ariel and books are delivered by UPS, The service was formed in 1993, based upon an analysis of interlibrary loan patterns which revealed considerable potential for equitable resource sharing among the SUNY University Center Libraries. Syracuse University, as a peer institution with complimentary collections, later joined the network, which is formed on the “miniature cooperative” resource sharing model. With data now available about Empire Express, it is possible to assess the service and gain insight about the “miniature cooperative” model as a strategy for equitable resource sharing.  相似文献

Distance Learning Library Services at the University of Kentucky provided an electronic reserves service as a pilot project for distance learning courses in the 2000–01 academic year. Distance Learning Programs, which is a part of the Distance Learning Technology Center, funded the project. Policies and procedures were formulated, an account was set up with the Copyright Clearance Center, and the service was marketed. Summary

Library organizations need models for the integration of electronic resources management into library collections and services. The approach taken at Iowa State University was one of coordination and collaboration, with the goal of ensuring that issues arising from the increasing numbers of electronic titles will be handled effectively and efficiently. One part of this approach was the creation of an electronic resources coordinator position within the technical services division. Public and academic libraries continue to have a vital role in providing reference services. As more and more information is only available in electronic form, reference librarians need to reaffirm their core values. Some of the changes happening in reference include smaller reference collections, the disposition of printed reference books, and the increased use of electronic tools. Other topics include different service models for the reference desk, the changing nature of reference questions, and changes in staffing at the reference desk. ABSTRACT

In the fall of 2000, the State University of New York College at Geneseo implemented an electronic reserve system. After a successful pilot of this system in the spring of 2000 with four academic departments, it was fully implemented for all departments on campus. This paper describes the program selected, the procedures used, and how students, faculty and staff reacted to the new system.

SUNY Geneseo is a primarily residential campus located in the village of Geneseo, 30 miles south of Rochester, New York. There are over 5,600 students, most of whom are full-time undergraduates, and 350 faculty, 260 of whom are full time. The curriculum consists of 47 undergraduate majors, 6 master's degree programs, and 24 interdisciplinary minors programs.  相似文献
