A representative sample of 300 printed monographs and analyzed serials distributed to depository libraries was searched in the OCLC online system to determine when, how, and by whom depository documents are likely to be cataloged. Particular attention was paid to differences between dates of distribution and cataloging for sales publications, for all titles cataloged by the Government Printing Office, and for those cataloged by the Library of Congress. Patterns relating to document distribution as well as to cataloging practices were discernible from survey results and are presented here. Major findings may be summarized as follows: 1) not all depository monographs are cataloged by the Government Printing Office; 2) sales publications are cataloged quickly, often before distribution by GPO; 3) the quality of cataloging records for depository documents available on OCLC is generally high; 4) the Library of Congress catalogs relatively few depository documents and is comparatively slow to do so; and 5) many different types of OCLC member libraries catalog federal depository documents, often before GPO does. The article concludes with a discussion of implications for future changes in documents cataloging policies among depository libraries, and argues for greater inclusion of documents records in the many online, public-access catalogs currently being planned or used.  相似文献

The OCLC Union List Subsystem (OCLC ULS) provides a standard, high quality, and widely used means of managing union list data. Over the last several years, OCLC ULS tape products have been used by thirteen health sciences libraries or groups to update SERHOLD. These thirteen libraries or groups were surveyed to examine practices in using OCLC to update SERHOLD. The National Library of Medicine's (NLM) processing of OCLC tape products was assessed to determine how OCLC data are handled by SERHOLD. Most important are the assignment of OCLC holdings symbols, OCLC record selection criteria, tape pull cycles, and the processing of exception reports produced by NLM as a result of tape loads.  相似文献

Life After Input
《期刊图书馆员》2013,64(1-2):147-156
This article examines the original input of serials into OCLC by a medium-sized research library, evaluating both to what degree and in what way the records are used thereafter, as well as the role of CONSER in the upgrading of records. In addition, the impact of the OCLC Oxford Project on the original input of serials into the data base is explored, followed by recommendations for the future role of n o n-CONSER OCLC libraries in the maintenance of member-input serial records.  相似文献

The Pennsylvania Union List of Serials (PaULS) is presently in the process of transition from development to maintenance. Since October 1, 1979, its development has been supported by the State Library of Pennsylvania with LSCA funds. The current article describes accomplishments of PaULS from early 1981 through April 1983 including the production of its "core titles" in COM fiche and the conversion of its records by OCLC to the format required for the union listing capability. Current and future problems for PaULS are discussed as are long-term maintenance issues. In addition, PaULS' role as one part of the national serials database is examined.  相似文献

Serials publishing in the Middle East over the last decade is most noteworthy. Unfortunately, a lack exists of proper bibliographical tools normally useful for the selection and acquisitions of serials, and vendors who specialize in supplying serials are few. In consequence, librarians have to use many channels in obtaining serial publications. As many serials published in the Middle East are non-commercial, publications, gifts and exchange methods must be resorted to in acquiring such publications.  相似文献

The number of journal titles available in digital format to libraries through aggregators and publisher packages has increased, but library resources to catalog these titles have not kept pace with the increases. More libraries are therefore turning to MARC record service vendors to provide batches of electronic serials bibliographic records, either full or brief. This study presents the results of a survey asking library personnel about their experiences with and attitudes toward MARC record services. Although many survey participants expressed satisfaction with the services, they also responded that they would like a greater number of more accurate full bibliographic records. Also, although a majority of libraries use a separate records approach with the services, a significant minority use a single record approach.  相似文献

Union listing of serials on OCLC can bring about an increase in interlibrary loan and turn-around time when implemented at a university library. Formerly accessible as a subsystem of OCLC, union listing is now available on Connexion Browser as MARC 21 holdings data. Immediately following a batch load of OCLC union listing records at medium-sized Louisiana university library, it was found that lending requests sent to the library were up 10% for all materials and up 13% for serials. An increase in borrower requests from patrons at the library was also observed when interlibrary loan request buttons were inserted into citation entries found on EBSCO host university databases.  相似文献

There is a long history of effective co-operation and national initiatives in controlling and sharing serial data in Australia. Prior to the 1980's this largely took the form of manually produced national union catalogues such as Scientific Serials in Australian Libraries: Serials in Australian Libraries, Social Sciences and the Humanities; and Newspapers in Australian Libraries. The commencement of the Australian Bibliographic Network (ABN) in 1980 provided the mechanism for both a national shared cataloguing venture and a truly national on-line union catalogue. The National Union Catalogue of Serials produced from ABN was dependent on the addition of holdings by ABN participating libraries. Several factors contributed to the growth of serials data on the national bibliographic database-notably the steady increase in the number of ABN participants undertaking serials cataloguing on ABN, serial conversion work on titles in the National Library card catalogues, and major serial conversion work undertaken by other Australian libraries. Allhough much has been achieved in the 1980's there remains much to be done to enhance the coverage of bibliographic and holdings data for serials on ABN.  相似文献

Union lists of serials are critical to the effective operation of interlibrary loan networks. The Michigan Health Sciences Libraries Association used the OCLC union list component to produce the Michigan Statewide Health Sciences Union List of Serials (MISHULS). MISHULS, which includes the serials holdings of ninety-three hospital health sciences libraries, is a subset of a statewide multi-type union list maintained on OCLC. The rationale for a statewide list and the criteria for choosing vendors are discussed. Typical costs are provided. Funding sources are identified and a unique approach to decentralized input is described. The benefits of resource sharing in a larger, multi-type library network are also explored.  相似文献

In 1979 the State Library of Pennsylvania awarded a contract of $99,304 to the Pittsburgh Regional Library Center to begin development of an on-line union list of serials for Pennsylvania. This article describes accomplishments of the first contract year, October 1, 1979 - September 30, 1980; the second year proposal for which a contract was awarded for $99,848; and accomplishments to date in the second year of the Pennsylvania Union List of Serials (PaULS). Plans for production of the initial core list of 2580 titles in COM by June 30, 1981 are described. OCLC developments including the introduction of its union listing capability are discussed and implications of these for the long-range future of PaULS are considered. Planning for the third year and beyond is reviewed and possible applications against the file and its usefulness as a tool for regional collection development are presented.  相似文献

The availability and content of on-line bibliographic records for curriculum materials are evaluated in this study. Records were selected from the OCLC OnLine Union Catalog, the predominant on-line bibliographic network providing cataloging to all types of libraries including school libraries and others supporting curriculum material collections. Based on a sample of shelflist cards for curriculum materials from the Instructional Materials Laboratory collection of the University Libraries at California State University, Northridge, a quantitative assessment is made of the content of the matching OCLC records. Study results suggest that the availability and content of OCLC catalog records for curriculum materials may satisfy the bibliographic information and access requirements of curriculum materials collection librarians.  相似文献

PromptCat is a new service offered by OCLC, in conjunction with monograph materials vendors, that provides libraries with a full bibliographic record from the OCLC Online Union Catalog (OLUC) simultaneous to the supply of materials from a vendor. The library's holdings are set automatically on the OLUC record. Because PromptCat eliminates the need for libraries to do individual title-by-title searching and record selection when materials are received, it will streamline local cataloging activities. It may also provide an impetus for libraries to reevaluate local editing practices and determine whether materials can be processed quickly upon receipt in acquisitions rather than in copy cataloging. This article addresses issues relating to PromptCat, including tests of the service conducted at The Ohio State University (OSU) and Michigan State University (MSU), an estimated cost/benefit analysis based on OSU's approval plan, and issues including coordination between OCLC, materials vendors, system vendors, and the library as well as workflow, organizational implications and staffing issues.  相似文献

Whether or not uniform titles serve any useful purpose has been debated almost since their implementation in 1981 with the adoption of AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. Second Edihon). The problems posed by a separate bibliographic record for each physical manifestation of the same intellectual work (e.g., original, reprint, microfilm) apply to some extent to all categories of material, but present special problems for union lists of serials. This article discusses these two problem areas of serials cataloging. A proposed solution to the multiple versions dilemma is also briefly discussed.  相似文献

This article briefly describes the experience of a concentrated serials course at the Columbia University School of Library Service in the summer of 1977. The course covered current issues in the acquisition, organization, preservation, storage, and servicing of serials collections, including problems of proliferation of serial titles, rising costs, and budgetary restraints in libraries.  相似文献
