The increase in the number of serial publications, the growth of holdings in libraries, and the maturation of librarianship are seen as largely responsible for the development of a specialty in serials librarianship by the time of the American Library Association's centennial celebration in 1976. This development often resulted in the organization of a separate serials department. In the decade following the ALA centennial several trends (e.g., economic stringency and automation) have converged to cause a re-evaluation of organizational patterns. In particular, the form versus function debate regarding serials organization is examined by reviewing professional activities and the published literature. 相似文献

The sources and access points of sport science literature are discussed, with the intent to provide a practical guide for the health science librarian, regardless of the size or type of library involved. Sport science literature is still scattered throughout publications directed to many different groups. Not centrally indexed, without standardized terminology, the holdings are dispersed among various types of libraries and documentation centers. SUMMARY There are between fifteen and twenty U.S. libraries that collect publications from Central Asia, defined here as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Collection development responsibility for these countries tends to rest with the Slavic selector, the Middle East selector, or both, divided by language. Vendors who can supply this material mostly also supply publications from other countries of the former Soviet Union. The author briefly discusses the history of collecting from this region and the results of a survey conducted in 2004. She presents evidence indicating that the main reason U.S. libraries are not receiving more books from the region is most likely because they are not being published, not because vendors are doing an inadequate job. 相似文献

This is a review of the literature and a selective, annotated bibliography on serials automation from 1976 to 1984 with an emphasis on recent English language publications. The bibliography is subdivided by topic: bibliographies; reviews and collections; bibliographic control, including ISBD(S), ISDS, ISSN, NSDP, CONSER, and AACR2; serials control, including chcck-in, claiming, binding and routing; systems and vendors; standards; union catalogs; fiscal control, and the organization of serials work. The selection of 150 citations highlights important events and trends and describes some lesser known developments. Bewildered by the profusion of entries for the various publications emanating from the Association for Computing Machinery, Special Interest Groups, the author sought and provides a listing of their titles. The author suggests that the variation in cataloging, many ignoring their affiliation with the association, makes it difficult to provide reference service. The lack of consistency, easily seen in union lists, may contribute to the public image of what librarians do. A representative sample of 300 printed monographs and analyzed serials distributed to depository libraries was searched in the OCLC online system to determine when, how, and by whom depository documents are likely to be cataloged. Particular attention was paid to differences between dates of distribution and cataloging for sales publications, for all titles cataloged by the Government Printing Office, and for those cataloged by the Library of Congress. Patterns relating to document distribution as well as to cataloging practices were discernible from survey results and are presented here. Major findings may be summarized as follows: 1) not all depository monographs are cataloged by the Government Printing Office; 2) sales publications are cataloged quickly, often before distribution by GPO; 3) the quality of cataloging records for depository documents available on OCLC is generally high; 4) the Library of Congress catalogs relatively few depository documents and is comparatively slow to do so; and 5) many different types of OCLC member libraries catalog federal depository documents, often before GPO does. The article concludes with a discussion of implications for future changes in documents cataloging policies among depository libraries, and argues for greater inclusion of documents records in the many online, public-access catalogs currently being planned or used. 相似文献

The Section on Acquisition and Exchange of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions was set up to provide a forum for librarians interested in the theory and practice of acquisition of library materials by purchase, gift and exchange. The Standing Committee of 12 librarians from several countries has inaugurated several studies in this area, and organizes open sessions at IFLA Conferences. Three relevant papers were presented at the 1988 IFLA Conference held in Sydney, Australia. Dr Leonhard gave details of conspectus in various countries, designed to overcome the problems of an increasing volume of publications coming at a time of decreasing real purchasing power. Mr Montag highlighted the problems caused by price differentials, particularly in the case of serials. Pergamon Press is reported to have surcharges up to 1590% for libraries in the case of its serials, whilst the Hogarth Press serials are up to 100% higher in Europe than in the USA. The Section is to survey this phenomenon worldwide, and report at the 1989 IFLA Conference in Paris. Miss Walters gave details of the work of ACPAD, which shipped some 3,000 cartons of library materials to universities in five developing countries in 1986/1987. Most of these come from Australian libraries weeding monographs, or converting hardcopy serials to microform. 相似文献

Reference work, like technology, is rarely value-free, and librarians often respond to over-used but urgent topics such as drug abuse, pollution or welfare in a negative, weary way. The role of the humanist at the reference desk is to foster a sense of community by helping students uncover the complexities of these issues, by introducing students to the work of people and organizations who care deeply, and by showing students how to become informed and involved. A currently developing resource is the flood of house organs from these organizations. While some publications are regular serials indexed in standard sources, others are not, but all are the best effort the organization can make to present the views of its members. The Portal to Texas History (http://texashistory.unt.edu) and the University of North Texas (UNT) Digital Library (http://digital.library.unt.edu) contain more than 445,000 items collectively, hosted by the UNT Libraries. These collections include a variety of serial publications such as newsletters, magazines, scholarly journals, annual reports, and yearbooks. Many of these serials are key resources for the user groups of both repositories. In this article, we discuss the importance of serials within our collections, some of the challenges, the standards we use, and how we leverage metadata to facilitate access to serials for diverse global users. 相似文献

Some types of publication are viewed by librarians as serials and by publishers as monographs. In the pre-digital environment, cataloging rules and library workflows were developed to manage these publications. The shift to electronic publishing, distribution, and access brings new considerations into play.
