Leadership, as a topic, has seen a lot of interest in academics as well as with practitioners. The search, however, has not yielded a concrete formula, though there are quite a few theories which have worked well in certain contexts. The context of special libraries is one such area which has a huge potential in discovering what leadership actions have worked well and what can be a framework for success in other special libraries, especially when the utility of special libraries is being questioned in a corporate environment. The dearth of leadership and leadership development literature in special libraries, from a practitioner's point of view, provides a good opportunity for sharing a small journey of success. The column builds upon the application of leadership actions deriving from diverse and merging fields like learning and development, organizational behavior, marketing, and human psychology of reading in making a case for the utility of corporate libraries in the development of employees. 相似文献

ABSTRACTSpecial libraries exist in an ecosystem consisting of the information industry, the library world, their own organizations, and workforce demographics. Librarians need to be aware of the trends shaping all of these facets. This column takes a close look at Outsell's Information Industry Outlook report for 2016 and its implications for special libraries. The outlook for special libraries is neither the previously forecast Baby Boomer retirement crisis nor the dire end of special libraries many feared during the recent recession. Instead, the special library world is transforming, creating both challenges and opportunities for special librarians. Millennials entering both the workforce at large and the library workforce will make their presence known. Savvy information professionals will stay on top of these trends and find their niche, whether in a traditional physical library or in emerging careers outside the library.Column Editor’s NoteSpecial libraries share concerns with their more general academic, public, and school counterparts, but they also have unique characteristics and concerns which merit separate consideration. Libraries of all types are evolving, and just as special libraries can learn from the general literature on libraries, practitioners in all types of libraries can learn from the experiences and best practices of special libraries. “The Specialist,” appearing in even-numbered issues of this journal, addresses the administrative concerns of special libraries. The column's scope is a broad umbrella of specialized librarianship and includes corporate, non-profit, government, and independent libraries as well as the specialized departments and branches of academic and public libraries. ��[Purpose/significance] In view of the differences between China and western developed countries in social system, social culture, economic development level, etc., this paper compares the different characteristics of the special services of public libraries in China and abroad, and provides reference for the development of the special services of public libraries in China.[Method/process] Based on the investigation of the status of the special services of public libraries in China and abroad, this paper respectively identified the main types of special services of Chinese and foreign public libraries through cluster analysis and conducted comparative analysis to reveal the commonalities and differences.[Result/conclusion] Comparing the characteristics of the special services of Chinese and foreign public libraries, this paper finds that the academic content of the special service of Chinese public libraries need to be improved, and the training of library professionals needs to be strengthened, and further attention needs to be paid to the interaction between libraries and their users in service process, so as to improve the attraction and influence of the special services of the public library. 相似文献

[目的/意义] 针对我国与西方发达国家在社会制度、社会文化、经济发展水平等方面存在的差异，对比国内外公共图书馆特色服务的不同特点，为我国公共图书馆特色服务的发展提供参考。[方法/过程] 在对国内外公共图书馆特色服务现状展开调查的基础上，通过聚类分析识别中外公共图书馆特色服务的主要类型并展开对比分析，揭示其中的共性和差异。[结果/结论] 对比中外公共图书馆特色服务的特点发现，我国公共图书馆特色服务内容的学术性有待提高，图书馆专业人才的培养还需要不断加强，应当进一步重视在服务过程中图书馆与用户之间的交互，以此来不断提升公共图书馆特色服务的吸引力和影响力。 相似文献

Summary The management issues facing those who deal with serials in special libraries may be common to all special libraries, unique to the particular discipline, or shared by all libraries struggling to deal with serials in the 1990s. A law librarian and a medical librarian described the history, nature, and use of serial literature in their respective subject areas, and discussed important customer issues facing their libraries, including the financial aspects. They were joined by a vendor's representative who summarized the similarities and differences in these library situations from a vendor's perspective, including the opportunities and limitations of the vendor/special library relationship. 相似文献

Librarians have been accused by both the political left and right of failing to acquire materials representing controversial views on social and political issues. Two bibliographies of monographs supporting conservative and liberal opinions are used to survey Ohio OCLC member libraries, searching for bias towards either side of the political spectrum. Conservative books appear more often in Ohio academic, public, and special libraries than do liberal titles. However, as books from either bibliography are in no more than 15% of all Ohio libraries, it appears the state's libraries have done a poor job in collecting controversial political materials. Further studies are needed to determine the extent, if any, of political bias among American libraries on collection development. 相似文献

高校图书馆的地方文献收藏与公共图书馆有所区别,为更好地制定高校图书馆的方志专藏发展政策,以广州中山大学图书馆为例,对其建馆85年来收藏的方志文献进行抽样统计分析,分别从复本率、出版时间、方志地域分布等方面进行评估,并在统计过程发现不足之处。最后小结高校图书馆地方文献馆藏发展应考虑的因素。 相似文献

The literature on the use of batch and on-line bibliographic data bases in collection development activities is reviewed. A sample of special libraries and medium-sized research libraries was surveyed to see how widespread is the use of on-line data bases in selection and collection evaluation. It was found that on-line data bases are being used primarily for bibliographic verification as part of the selection process. Very little use in collection evaluation was reported, although its potential was acknowledged. The author's use in evaluation is described. 相似文献
