ABSTRACT

Due to limited disclosure requirements, obtaining private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) information presents challenges to academic researchers. However, the universe of commercially available resources that focus on private equity and venture capital has increased substantially over the past decade. This article examines recent academic business literature to evaluate whether resources from newer providers in this subject area (CB Insights, PitchBook, Preqin, PrivCo) are gaining traction among academic researchers. It also matches the resources that researchers are citing to library holdings in an effort to measure library support for PE/VC research. The results indicate that data from traditional providers (Dow Jones, S&P Capital IQ, Thomson Reuters) continues to be heavily used and that libraries are providing moderate support for PE/VC research.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article is an interview with three librarians with extensive experience in private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) research. Two of the participants work in a business research consultancy and one works in an academic library within a graduate business school. They shared their thoughts on what is unique or noteworthy about conducting research in these areas. Topics covered include: a typical workday; common research requests; information resources used; differences in research in private equity and venture capital; the information needs of entrepreneurs, students and professors; and challenges that arise in conducting PE and VC research.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The venture capital and private equity investment fields are not as well understood as other sectors of the financial industry, especially those focused on publicly traded instruments, such as stocks and bonds. To help business librarians understand venture capital and private equity firms, this article looks at how these businesses invest. By briefly examining investments by three venture capitalists and three private equity firms, readers can begin to understand the methods and aims of those investors. This article describes investments by venture capital leaders Georges Doriot of American Research and Development, William J. Casey, and Tom Perkins of Kleiner Perkins. It also describes some of the criteria applied by those venture capitalists to select firms in which to invest: how they evaluated companies and the executives who ran them. The article also looks at three private equity firms, Warburg Pincus, Tribeca Asset Management, and the Carlyle Group, companies those PE firms purchased, and factors that made those acquisitions profitable.  相似文献

Sharing and Transforming Access to Resources Section (STARS) is a new section of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) that will bring together librarians and library staff involved with interlibrary loan, document delivery, remote circulation, access services, cooperative reference, cooperative collection development, remote storage, and other shared library services, as well as publishers, producers, and suppliers of products and services that support resource sharing activities. ABSTRACT

Given the high visibility of venture capital and private equity (VC/PE) in business news, entrepreneurs may be misled on the role and relative size of this financing model. In reality however, VC/PE is quite difficult to obtain, particularly for young entrepreneurs. With this in mind, I assess seven popular models for financing that may be of interest to entrepreneurial students. These seven models include: self-funding/bootstrapping; friends, family, and colleagues; banks; accelerators; angel investors; peer-to-peer (P2P) lending; and crowdfunding. Each model is summarized and evaluated for their advantages and disadvantages. A discussion of relevant resources for each model is also provided.  相似文献

In few areas are the risks and opportunities for publishers as great as they are in new technology products. Richard Johnson discusses the opportunities publishers have in expanding into software, audiotapes, online databases, CD-ROM, and video. The government of Armenia and the Next Page Foundation supported the Sixth International Forum of Translators and Publishers held in Yerevan from 5th to 8th November 2012. Antje Sorensen and Richard Balkwill from the International Publishers Association led a two-day workshop entitled ‘The Role of Copyright System in the Promotion of Publishing as a Cultural Industry’. Presentations on international perspectives on copyright and the mechanics of trading in translation and other rights were blended with discussion and debate. The international issues of digital open access and free information were of less concern to local publishers than the effective application of and compliance to recent copyright laws in the country. Piracy was still sapping publishers’ business and continuing to deter potential foreign collaboration and co-publishing deals. The forum was enriched with an extensive program of cultural events and social gatherings.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The science and technology subject group within the reference department of the University of Tennessee Libraries brings together librarians from reference and other departments who have collection development and subject liaison duties. The authors describe the group's composition and explain how the sci/tech librarians work cooperatively toward goals set by both the Libraries' Reference & Instructional Services and Collection Development & Management departments. The sci/tech group's primary cooperative functions are to facilitate librarians' mutual assistance in organizing projects, share insights for reference and collection development/management activities, plan instruction efforts, discuss web site development, promote mastery of resources and tools, and address other concerns. The subject group enables librarians to clarify plans and procedures and to come to grips with complicated budget matters. A fundamental benefit of group discussions is that they provide an opportunity to explore viewpoints from librarians outside the reference team, leading to more well-rounded decisions. Together with the other subject groups, the sci/tech librarians and their coordinator identify major needs for information and work to provide solutions that improve library services to the academic community.  相似文献

As an assignment for the Reference and User Services Association and as part of the American Library Association Emerging Leaders Program, the authors created a databank to house the results of a large-scale interlibrary loan staffing survey. After examining the pros and cons of several software solutions, the authors decided to use a Web-based database product, Dabble DB. The paper discusses the scope, outcomes, and value of the Reference and User Services Association interlibrary loan survey, the development of the authors’ project plan, and recommendations for the use of cloud-based database products in library operations.  相似文献

Summary

The presentation, “E-Journals, Kansas Style,” looks at the traditional roles that researchers, publishers, and libraries have had in the production, distribution, cataloging, and archiving of peer-reviewed journals. This discussion then went on to talk about a few of the factors in today's academic society that have seen these roles begin to change: spiraling cost, the technology boom, and WWW ease in publishing, to name a few. The focus of the presentation then turned to the cooperative undertaking between the Great Plains/Rocky Mountain Hazardous Substance Research Center (HSRC), Kansas State University, and the KSU Libraries, and their joint venture to produce a peer-reviewed electronic journal.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the level of international scientific publication by Kazakhstani researchers, and considers the problem of access to international scientific resources in Kazakhstan, a developing country. Key areas of the discussion are Kazakhstan's strategic plans and policies regarding science, roles of international publishers in science, and the relationship between international publishers and the government of Kazakhstan. The article bears the informative meaning and has no research and findings. However, this is a good start point for the author and other Kazakhstani library and information professionals to study the subject more deeply and propose solutions for the good of all.  相似文献

Abstract

A contribution to an issue devoted to end-user research needs and information-seeking behavior, this paper describes a cooperative venture between faculty members, librarians and students to assess and improve methods of bibliographic instruction for business classes in order to assist students with their research needs. At St. Edward' s University' s Scarborough-Phillips Library, bibliographic instruction (BI) of business information is offered to students upon the request of faculty members of the Business School-it is not a required credit course. A new approach to eliminating information overload in BI sessions was attempted, proved successful and will likely be repeated.  相似文献

To fill this gap, we introduce the concept of emotional labor to the library context, presenting a qualitative analysis of librarians' experiences. Guidelines developed by the American Association of School of Librarians and the Reference and Adult Services Division of the American Library Association can aid school library media specialists in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of reference and information services for the school community. This article discusses the value of such professionally sanctioned guidelines and uses two documents, Information Power and "Information Services for Information Consumers," as the basis for a checklist for assessing building-level school library media reference services. Abstract

The purpose of the article is to provide a first exploration of success drivers and inhibitors of mobile business start‐ups in Germany. Based on this objective we reviewed various written sources and interviewed specialised venture capital managers. This led to the identification of about 50 m‐business start‐ups in Germany. Most of these new ventures address business rather than residential customers. Our preliminary analysis suggested nine general hypotheses on internal success factors likely to be of particular importance for m‐business start‐ups. Among these factors were the pursuance of a fo‐cussed differentiation and pioneering market entry strategy or the ability to adapt services to the variety of mobile devices in the market. Young m‐business ventures follow different business models (e.g. application infrastructure provision, application service provision or mobile portal operation), which possess model‐specific success drivers or inhibitors. Further, more long‐term research with larger samples is needed to validate and to specify the article's rather general hypotheses on success factors of German m‐business ventures.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

After a brief look at the Polish book trade under communism, the article examines developments since communism's collapse in late 1989, concentrating on monographs. The initial mushrooming of publishers was followed in 1992 by the failure of Sk?adnica Ksi?garska as the monopoly book distributor. Since then, a number of private wholesalers have emerged; publishers are also distributing their out-put themselves. The system is now working well for the majority of publications. However, it is often not particularly effective for scholary books. Reasons, consequences, and tactics for coping are discussed.  相似文献
