Planning a conference at the best of times is intense. Add in a lingering pandemic and the first attempt at a hybrid conference then planning a conference can become extremely stressful. Selecting sessions for a conference can fall under the responsibilities of librarians contributing to the profession and completing service requirements. This paper maps the research, creation, and implementation of a rubric to guide the evaluation of session proposals for a technical services library conference and the creation of a webpage to inform those thinking of submitting a proposal. Summary I feel that I have had a successful reference encounter if I have: (a) used effectively my knowledge of reference sources, (b) properly negotiated the sometimes intricate psychological thicket of the reference interview, and (c) made the user feel positive about the reference department even if no answer was found to a particular question. Conversely, if I neglect one of these factors, I may have failed to help a user. If I am too tired, inattentive, or preoccupied to pay full attention to a reference question I am likely to forget a resource or a reference technique that would answer the user's question. Failure can be intellectual, psychological, or ethical, or some combination of these. I can forgive myself for simply forgetting a reference source. But it is more troubling to neglect to pay full attention to a question because something about the user irritates or threatens me. If I let a personal response to a user interfere with my professional obligation to listen nonjudgmentally to a question then I am not employing my intellectual powers to their full capacity and consequently not living up to my ethical obligation as a professional librarian to give service to all members of the public. This essay will discuss examples of encounters which demonstrate the pleasure of reference work when I live up to these principles and the pitfalls of reference work, when I do not live up to them. 相似文献

Evaluators of library programs have different perspectives on why to conduct an evaluation and also how to do so. The author
suggests that a minimal approach to conducting a library program evaluation is to prove that the program exists. But this
perspective has expanded to include different degrees of interest in the client and operations, culminating in a combined
focus that leads evaluators to conduct outcome assessments. The chapter includes speculation on what motivates managers to
undertake an evaluation, a review of some ways that library evaluations are conducted, and a discussion of several examples
of program evaluations. Though there are not single directives for undertaking a library program evaluation, there are a variety
of tools and advice to entice librarians to do more of them as a way to improve understanding the value of a library to its

This phenomenological study examines the unique perceptions of immigrant women concerning the public library as a meeting place, a support to integration into American culture, and a provider of programs for acquisition of the English language. The library offers a place for observing the culture of the new country from a distance to active participation; it is an arena for comfort and consolation in a difficult life situation as well as an arena for activity and participation. It provides support in developing friendships, acclimating to a new culture, learning a new language, and providing avenues to employment. Three mothers, who fulfilled the criteria for the study, were selected from an initial focus group. Women from Kurdistan, Mexico, and Indonesia were interviewed individually to gain an understanding on the issues brought forth in the focus group. They participated in interviews over the course of 6 months. These programs became a fortuitous blending of an established community with a group of families looking for a support community in a new country. This study has implications for institutions serving immigrants as they look to find a community of support, to learn English, and to acclimate to American culture as they create a comfortable identity that blends their home country with the new country. 相似文献

This article describes the development of a system for changing a university library's collection development strategy from the traditional “just in case” model to a “just in time” approach. The reasons for such a change included a desire to be more responsive to user requirements, a need to be more flexible in acquiring interdisciplinary resources and new formats, and a substantial cut in the library's budget. The Collection Development librarians envisioned the collections as a service, using a simpler and more versatile accounting structure. The Access-Based Collection Development (ABCD) model emphasizes making materials available at the point of need rather than having them on hand in anticipation of use. ABCD has four overarching themes: to be sustainable, to be holistic and inclusive, to be flexible and scalable, and to use evidence for decision-making. The infrastructure of a typical search engine can be used to calculate and resolve persistent document identifiers: a string that can uniquely identify and locate a document on the Internet without reference to its original location (URL). Bookmarking a document using such an identifier allows its retrieval even if the document's URL, and, in many cases, its contents change. Web client applications can offer facilities for users to bookmark a page by reference to a search engine and the persistent identifier instead of the original URL. The identifiers are calculated using a global Internet term index; a document's unique identifier consists of a word or word combination that occurs uniquely in the specific document. We use a genetic algorithm to locate a minimal unique document identifier: the shortest word or word combination that will locate the document. We tested our approach by implementing tools for indexing a document collection, calculating the persistent identifiers, performing queries, and distributing the computation and storage load among many computers. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This article describes an “on-the-road” usability study and explains the study's methodological challenges, solutions, and recommendations. The study concerned a library-consortium website, which is a communication and educational tool for librarians who are physically dispersed throughout the state, and an intranet for remote users. Rather than traveling to numerous locations or attempting a remote usability evaluation of the website, the lab took a mobile laboratory to a professional conference where a large number of website users were gathered. Four doctoral students used the talk-aloud protocol to interview 14 conference participants. The interviews were recorded with Morae software on laptop computers, and participants were asked to complete 13 tasks. Although there proved to be difficulties in mobile usability testing, the conference provided a space to describe the project and recruit participants. While the optimal place to conduct usability testing is in either the lab or the participant's natural environment, advantages in taking it to a conference include access to a diverse range of users and the ability to generate interest in the project among users. 相似文献
