Abstract

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the use and importance of examining dissertations listed in scholarly journals, while focusing on a critical period of French doctoral education in historical studies. French dissertations in history were bibliometrically examined from Revue historique, a mainstream history journal published in France. Prior to 1984, there existed three separate doctoral degrees in France for the social sciences and the humanities. Data from 1976 to 1990 were profiled reflecting critical changes to the French doctoral process as it underwent a period of doctoral reform. The period 1983–1990 is examined critically for its significance with respect to transformation and changes in degree structure, subdisciplinary evolution and periodization. Journals listing dissertations can be examined for their disciplinary indicators. Understanding these changes in gray literature is critical for researchers using French doctoral dissertations in historical studies.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The SUNY Express document and book delivery service was implemented in October 1993, within the context of cooperative resource sharing among the SUNY (State University of New York) University Center Libraries. This article discusses the fixed cost factors of the service, insights gained about actual costs, and the framework of additional cost factors influencing overall cost effectiveness of the cooperative. The article primarily presents the perspective of an individual institution (the University at Albany), but it also discusses cost factors generally applied to the four SUNY University Centers (Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo and Stony Brook).  相似文献

Abstract

French geography dissertations for the years 1985–2002 were examined for their salient characteristics in terms of degree production, dissertation type, institutional affiliation, and geographical reach. These dissertations offer a rich base of research conducted in a country known for its innovative geographical research and tradition. Particular strengths and trends were discerned and concentrations of institutional base and activity established. This study can serve as a template for other national research traditions and disciplines, and is especially useful for library science and those interested in characteristics of literature studies.  相似文献

Dissertation advising is an important form of mentoring. To investigate the impact of dissertation advising over time, advisor and committee member names were collected for 2400 dissertations completed over a 40-year period (1964–2004) in 32 North American information and library science schools. Several mentoring impact metrics are reported for a subset of the data, including the number of dissertations advised, the number of dissertation committees served on, the ratio of advising to committee membership, and the fractional “mpact” that weights advising and committee membership. The subset consists of data for six schools that produced at least three dozen dissertations and for which complete data is available. The data and resulting “mpact” metrics offer new ways to assess faculty impact and to investigate the nature and growth of a field.  相似文献

Abstract

The first and unique training centre in Library and Information Science (LIS) in Benin has been training students since 1982. Ten years after the introduction of Internet in the country, students may have been aware of the importance and the richness of its resources. To what extent do students use Internet-based resources? How do citations to Internet-based resources vary in students’ works over years? This study covers especially LIS students’ dissertations. The results show that the percentage of Internet-based resources cited in dissertations was very low until 2001. Even if the trend line shows an increase starting from 2002, Internet-based resources are very rare in the dissertations (less than 10%). A few students give references to the maximum of Internet-based resources.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The challenge of assigning subject headings to academic theses and dissertations in a timely and cost-effective manner is discussed. The paper describes a collaborative effort between cataloger and subject bibliographer at the University of Nevada, Reno. The project has proven effective in getting theses processed in a shorter amount of time, with less total time spent cataloging and analyzing the items. The authors believe that utilizing the knowledge of the subject specialist has also provided improved subject access, particularly in highly specialized theses and dissertations. Objective:

This paper describes the Lamar Soutter Library''s process and costs associated with digitizing 300 doctoral dissertations for a newly implemented institutional repository at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Methodology:

Project tasks included identifying metadata elements, obtaining and tracking permissions, converting the dissertations to an electronic format, and coordinating workflow between library departments. Each dissertation was scanned, reviewed for quality control, enhanced with a table of contents, processed through an optical character recognition function, and added to the institutional repository.

Results:

Three hundred and twenty dissertations were digitized and added to the repository for a cost of $23,562, or $0.28 per page. Seventy-four percent of the authors who were contacted (n = 282) granted permission to digitize their dissertations. Processing time per title was 170 minutes, for a total processing time of 906 hours. In the first 17 months, full-text dissertations in the collection were downloaded 17,555 times.

Conclusion:

Locally digitizing dissertations or other scholarly works for inclusion in institutional repositories can be cost effective, especially if small, defined projects are chosen. A successful project serves as an excellent recruitment strategy for the institutional repository and helps libraries build new relationships. Challenges include workflow, cost, policy development, and copyright permissions.

Highlights

  • The Lamar Soutter Library partnered with the University of Massachusetts Medical School Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences to digitize doctoral dissertations for inclusion in a newly created institutional repository.
  • Seventy-four percent of dissertation authors (209/282) gave permission for the digitization. The cost to process the entire dissertation collection in-house was $23,562, only $1,062 more than the estimate to outsource.
  • Digitizing the dissertation collection increased access: the print collection was used 723 times in the past 5 years, while the electronic collection was used 17,555 times in 17 months.

  • In-house digitization projects can be cost-competitive with outsourced alternatives.
  • A repository can be a catalyst for developing relationships in the institution by providing the library with a new avenue for outreach.

Recent studies demonstrated that it is possible to reduce Inverted Files (IF) sizes by reassigning the document identifiers of the original collection, as this lowers the distance between the positions of documents related to a single term. Variable-bit encoding schemes can exploit the average gap reduction and decrease the total amount of bits per document pointer. This paper presents an efficient solution to the reassignment problem, which consists in reducing the input data dimensionality using a SVD transformation, as well as considering it a Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP). We also present some efficient solutions based on clustering. Finally, we combine both the TSP and the clustering strategies for reordering the document identifiers. We present experimental tests and performance results in two text TREC collections, obtaining good compression ratios with low running times, and advance the possibility of obtaining scalable solutions for web collections based on the techniques presented here.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Researchers must choose between many sources when obtaining journal articles. University of Toledo faculty and graduate students in the sciences, pharmacy, and engineering were surveyed to ascertain their preferences in journal article formats and features, and their awareness, frequency of use, and preference ranking of four services: traditional interlibrary loan, electronic journals, and faxes from either a storage depository or the UnCover document delivery service. Speed and print quality topped the desired features; faxing was the least desirable format. Electronic journals and interlibrary loan were the most used services, though there are indications that interlibrary loan is used reluctantly.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The article presents a case study of Empire Express, a resource sharing network among the libraries of the State University of New York (SUNY) University Centers at Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook, along with Syracuse University. The network involves an expedited interlibrary loan service, in which requests and documents are transmitted via Ariel and books are delivered by UPS, The service was formed in 1993, based upon an analysis of interlibrary loan patterns which revealed considerable potential for equitable resource sharing among the SUNY University Center Libraries. Syracuse University, as a peer institution with complimentary collections, later joined the network, which is formed on the “miniature cooperative” resource sharing model. With data now available about Empire Express, it is possible to assess the service and gain insight about the “miniature cooperative” model as a strategy for equitable resource sharing.  相似文献

In the Winter 1967–68 issue of the Journal of Broadcasting Mr. Sperry published a highly selective bibliography of works on the FCC prepared following a search of the various periodical indices, lists of theses and dissertations, the Monthly Catalog of U. S. Government Publications, the Library of Congress Catalog and similar sources. Abstract

The researchers extracted a disproportionate stratified random sample from 40?years of thesis bibliographic records at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. Match rates for thesis authors in the LC/NACO Name Authority File and in Canadiana Authorities were examined. ProQuest digitization of older theses, the creation of an institutional repository, the move to electronic theses and dissertations in 2011, and the implementation of vendor-assisted authority control in 2017 impacted bibliographic records. In addition to the dearth of matches in general, results uncovered false matches and significant changes to Library and Archives Canada thesis authority control practices over the years.  相似文献

Objective: This study was undertaken in order to determine how health sciences libraries in a ten-state region are using Loansome Doc, with an emphasis on whether this tool continues to be used to serve unaffiliated health professionals. Methods: Usage data were examined and health sciences libraries were administered a survey to determine how they are using this tool. Results: Loansome Doc usage across libraries is low and declining, and a number of libraries do not serve unaffiliated health professionals with this tool. Conclusions: Use of Loansome Doc is low and declining, in part, due to license restrictions, declining interlibrary loan, and the prevalence of alternatives, such as OCLC's ILLiad, for document delivery to affiliated users.  相似文献
