This article explores facets of effective collaboration between a librarian and a professor in the education field at a master's-level public institution. When we reflected on what made (and continues to make) our collaboration work, we discovered what actions and approaches proved most critical. Accordingly, we frame what helped us collectively become more literate around four pieces of advice: (1) Move what you offer closer to end users and make it “just right”; (2) unite around similar purpose; (3) create wins for all; and (4) leave them wanting more. 相似文献

Since 2007, Brigham Young University Library has provided a paid internship program for undergraduates that allows them to work with a librarian in an academic setting to help them decide if they wish to pursue a master's degree in Library Science. This article describes the internship program and provides results of surveys given to both interns and library mentors regarding their expectations and outcomes. In a new addition to the program, interns now meet with multiple librarians to gain a broad understanding of library work and how different library areas function together. 相似文献

This study investigates the possibility of constructing an algorithm for allocating monographs from the shelves of the Washington State Library to storage, minimizing the probability of the materials' being recalled by user demand. Current circulation was analyzed to determine the distribution of the lengths of time since the previous circulation, with implied cut-off points for various levels of user satisfaction. Then a random sample of the shelflist was utilized to estimate the portion of the collection which could be stored at any given level of satisfaction. The method can provide management information for a decision as to desired user satisfaction and can indicate the consequent size of the core collection and of the stored collection. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This study investigated the post-master's educational needs and interests of information professionals. The population for the study consisted of members of the library associations of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Ontario, Canada. About 78 percent of the respondents held a master's degree in library science, 22 percent a master's degree in another discipline, almost 1 percent was enrolled in a doctoral program, 1 percent possessed a doctorate, and 16 percent had some other degree. Given the choice of an LIS only doctoral program or one combined with the field of business administration or computer science, the participants expressed a slight preference for the LIS only program. Of the other fields suggested by participants, education and public administration were the most popular. Participants also expressed a strong preference for non-traditional modes of instruction. 相似文献

In terms of positioning a student for Ph.D. admission, the decision to complete a thesis or comprehensive exams as one's M.A. capstone is based on much speculation, but little systematic study. This study surveyed M.A. and Ph.D. Communication program representatives about doctoral programs' admission preferences and practices regarding applicants holding M.A.s from other institutions, as well as perceptions of their institution's students' actual capstone choices. In nearly half the cases, doctoral program representatives were unaware of whether students admitted with M.A.s had elected the thesis, comprehensive exams, or some other capstone option. Additionally, the results show that Ph.D. programs prioritize students' writing samples, statements of reasons, and GRE scores when deciding admission. There were discrepancies between M.A. program representatives' perceptions of what information weighed most heavily with doctoral admissions committees and the priorities reported by Ph.D. program representatives. 相似文献

ABSTRACT In the fall of 2000, the State University of New York College at Geneseo implemented an electronic reserve system. After a successful pilot of this system in the spring of 2000 with four academic departments, it was fully implemented for all departments on campus. This paper describes the program selected, the procedures used, and how students, faculty and staff reacted to the new system. SUNY Geneseo is a primarily residential campus located in the village of Geneseo, 30 miles south of Rochester, New York. There are over 5,600 students, most of whom are full-time undergraduates, and 350 faculty, 260 of whom are full time. The curriculum consists of 47 undergraduate majors, 6 master's degree programs, and 24 interdisciplinary minors programs. 相似文献

This research article is based on a national survey, conducted in 2016, concerning the value of an advanced subject degree in addition to a master's degree in library science (MLS/MLIS) for liaison librarians. In the article we discuss perceptions academic librarians have about their own professional education, the potential merit (or lack thereof) of an additional graduate degree, and the relationship and interdependence between both degrees as perceived by those who have obtained them. Two groups of academic librarians are evaluated: those with both an MLS/MLIS and an advanced subject degree, and those with solely an MLS/MLIS degree. This study utilizes both quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate the current population related to our research. The overarching goal of this study is to ask questions and stimulate conversation about the value of an advanced degree and how academic library liaisons can acquire and develop skills required to successfully serve as liaison and subject librarians. 相似文献

The increased use of technology in academia combined with the challenges posed by growing enrollments of nontraditional graduate students have forced institutions to adapt educational programs to insure student retention and academic success. This case study examines student perceptions and responses to a required information literacy workshop, developed for a Masters in Social Work, herein referred to as an MSW program. A review of the literature on information literacy needs of graduate students (specifically nontraditional students entering MSW programs) is presented below. Also included are the results of a pre/post-questionnaire that was developed and administered in the fall of 2003/2004 along with classroom observations to determine if additional information literacy instruction was necessary. The findings suggested that there was significant need for additional instruction and that graduate students recognize the need for information literacy instruction throughout their MSW track. 相似文献

Online information literacy instruction: Can it impact learning as effectively as face-to-face instruction? Using a quasi-experimental design, this study examined that in relation to upper-level sociology students; it also considered whether library instruction affected participants’ perceptions of learning formats’ (i.e., online or face-to-face) effectiveness and the academic library's place in their research. Using a pretest/posttest design, no significant learning difference was found between the two instructional delivery formats. However, data suggested that instruction did impact online participants’ perceptions of the academic library as a place for research. Implications of this research and future directions for inquiry are discussed. 相似文献

The executive MBA (EMBA) is a high-profile, fast-track program that allows executives and managers to earn a master's of business administration degree while remaining employed. The unique needs of EMBA students provide business librarians with an opportunity to design a specialized outreach program, which can strengthen students’ ties across campus. This article examines the characteristics of EMBA students as well as the library outreach services provided to the Wichita State University EMBA program. Academic librarians have long been responsible for teaching information literacy competencies on college campuses, even as many are hesitant to accept the title of teacher. With inadequate instructional design preparation and one-shot sessions serving as a popular, if limited, instructional medium, librarians' design processes are often developed on the job and infrequently explored in the literature. Previous research has examined specific design models and instructional strategies, but few studies were found that determined how academic librarians select and implement these design decisions within the context of a one-shot. This Delphi study described academic librarians' design processes in an effort to develop practical takeaways for training and design of one-shot sessions using expert consensus. This study found (1) academic librarians find their master's degree curriculum lacking in instructional preparation; (2) participants preferred professional development that allowed for observation and direct experience; (3) consensus centering objectives in design decisions; (4) backward design was a frequently used model due to its ease of use, flexibility, and emphasis on objectives; and (5) the one-shot environment significantly impacted participants' design processes leading to modifications in their teaching. This paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for practitioners and recommendations for future research directions. 相似文献

A survey was conducted among library and information science (LIS) practitioners to examine the effect of the research methods course on LIS practitioners' work. Findings suggest the research methods course is a valuable component of the master's in library and information science (MLIS) program. Taking the research methods course increases LIS practitioners' research interest and assists them by helping them critically evaluate published literature and apply it at work, provide better assistance to library patrons, produce valid and reliable data to facilitate decision making, identify problems at work and design and implement studies to solve them, and write grants and for publication. Abstract This paper evaluates the comprehensiveness and composition of university library holdings of economics journals of three types of institutions: schools that offer a doctoral degree program in economics; schools that offer a master's degree in economics, and schools that offer only a baccalaureate degree in economics. This study develops and tests an instrument useful for evaluating the quality of academic libraries on the World Wide Web (Libweb). By consulting authoritative criteria used for traditional print resources and Internet/Web resources, a set of 68 essential indicators was generated and later reorganized and reduced to 16 criteria through factor analysis. After a survey of library experts, the instrument's reliability was verified by analysis of variance. Furthermore, a regression model considering both the respondents' demographics and the quality criteria was applied to identify 11 significant factors, which were later reduced to eight factors. These eight factors represent the most salient and nonredundant criteria. Two instrument forms are suggested for prospective users to evaluate academic Libweb quality and to construct and maintain a good site. 相似文献

This study investigated the relationship between an institution's academic library performance measures and undergraduates' library use and educational outcomes. The sample consisted of 7,958 undergraduates attending 36 colleges and universities representing four institutional types. Regression analyses determined the relationship between academic library performance measures and library use and self-reported gains in critical thinking while controlling for undergraduates' background characteristics and college experiences. Greater utilization of academic library services had a negative relationship with undergraduate library use at two institutional types. However, undergraduates attending research universities with greater academic library resources had higher self-reported gains in critical thinking. Regressions for the four institutional types explained 25% to 32% of the variance for library use and 22% to 27% of the variance for self-reported gains in critical thinking. The results provide a better understanding of how academic library resources and services affect both library usage and educational outcomes. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This article surveyed the sources of job satisfaction among 1,833 library and information science (LIS) master's program graduates in North Carolina from 1964–2009. The study examined the effects of traditional work-related variables such as income, flexibility, co-workers, fringe benefits, and setting on job satisfaction. In addition, the analysis introduces variables related to the notion of craft, professional achievement, and family dynamics to determine what impact they have. Craft combines the wish to perform one's work well independent of extrinsic factors or influences and the desire of the worker to create a quality final outcome or product. The major finding of the study is that craft and professional achievement are the largest determinants of job satisfaction among LIS graduates. Meanwhile, variables such as marital status, whether or not one has children, and breadwinner status had no discernible effect. Supportive co-workers, being a woman, and membership in professional organizations likewise correlate with job satisfaction, while being a full-time worker, anxiety over job security, and working in an academic library setting contributed to dissatisfaction. Although LIS graduates generally report being very content in their jobs, this study suggests that they are anxious about changes such as the increasing number of temporary and freelance jobs and the perception that full-time staff are doing more work with fewer resources. 相似文献
