Abstract

In the 1990′s, school library media specialists must stress their expertise as teaching professionals in order to make informed decisions relating to the automation of library catalogs. The cognitive paradigm provides a user-centered perspective of the information retrieval process and confirms the problematic nature of the new technology for children. By applying the cognitive viewpoint to online information retrieval, school library media specialists can help guide system design and plan instructional programs that are developmentally appropriate for children.  相似文献

Fulfilling the “promise inherent in the student workforce” (Burrows 1995, 85) must be a collaborative effort involving the Library administration, Circulation staff, Reference librarians, and the students themselves. Advances in library technologies have dramatically changed the way that libraries do business. Just as access to Internet resources has widened the sphere of the Reference librarian, automation has expanded the role of the Circulation desk assistant in filling the information needs of library users. Summary

Due to the wealth of information available on the Internet, using it for research is often difficult and time consuming. These barriers can be traced to the Internet's mystic appeal. This misplaced focus often leads users away from the very thought process that directed them to this resource tool. The following article stresses a research process rather than the delivering technology. It details the use of an established evaluation criteria that helps identify quality Net resources. The process also involves locating Net information based on resource type (museums, research centers, oral testimonies, library catalogs, etc.). ABSTRACT

The automated library system (ALS) has undergone significant changes since its inception in the 1970s. It is no longer simply a database to house and retrieve a library's holdings. It has become an integrated library system (ILS) comprised of robust clusters of systems involving every process and module related to libraries.

The Internet, open source, the increase in electronic resources, and the rising expectations of library users are changing the nature of the ILS. Library vendors are at times struggling to keep up with the demand for new services while providing support for existing services.

This article details the evolving role of the ILS and discusses where it could and should be headed.  相似文献

Abstract

Library automation assumed a great deal of importance in libraries in the mid 1960’s. Since then it has become a household word in librarianship. Library automation in university libraries in Ghana is a relatively new concept. Even though computers have been installed in the three university libraries in Ghana, computerization has not had much impact on the services provided by these libraries. This paper reviews the computerization projects in the university libraries in Ghana, with a particular reference to the Balme Library of the University of Ghana. Reasons for automation, areas of application and problems associated with automation are discussed. Also highlighted are barriers militating against successful university library automation, like financial problems, attitudinal problems, lack of co-operation among university libraries, hardware and software problems and personnel problems. Recommendations are made for the improvement of automation at the university libraries in Ghana. These include evaluation of existing systems, properly planned automation project, financial support and co-operation among the university libraries.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Studies report the need for personnel in all library fields to be skillful in software productivity tool usage. This skill is defined as encompassing collaborative and office automation software products and tools. Public library directors often find it difficult to assess this skill in applicants seeking employment. This research study, consequently, investigates the public library director's perception of the importance of professional job candidates having information technology skills as indicated by external certification in software productivity tools. The study divides the results based upon class standing among libraries and upon the tenure of the public library directors in their jobs. The conclusions support a positive response to the need for information technology skills and external certification of applicants by public library directors.  相似文献

The Internet and World Wide Web demonstrate the earliest stages of this evolving virtual library of the natural world, offering an increasing array of high-quality, innovative resources and services in the natural science arena. This article discusses the leading providers of natural science information on the Internet and highlights some of the exemplary resources they are delivering online. Abstract

The study surveyed the use of Internet among undergraduate students at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. A total of 1000 questionnaires were distributed using a stratified sampling method to select the respondents. Ten faculties were covered. A total of 664 questionnaires were returned and all were usable. The findings revealed a high percentage use of the Internet. The access point for them is cyber cafes. The university library though linked to the Internet is yet to provide access to students. Respondents pay for the access time through their pocket money for food, books and assistance from friends. Their use of the Internet has not affected their use of the library. Some problems they face in their use of the Internet include slowness of the server and payment for the access time. The study recommends that the university should provide access points for students. The university library also should continue to aim at ensuring that it gets enough funds from the government and sponsors to be able to provide access points in the library for use by students and include the use of Internet in its library instruction course.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The focus of this study is on the information-seeking behavior of the off-campus students in 2 of the 7 satellite centers of the Centre for Continuing Education, the outreach arm of the University of Botswana. Although the university deeply committed itself to the project, the university library could not afford to establish branch libraries in all the off-campus centers. With the nearest university branch libraries located some 160 km and 200 km away from the centers of study and only branch offices of the public library available, the findings revealed that the library and information needs of the students were not significantly met. As printed sources were revealed as their preferred choice of information format, e-mail and the Internet sources were not given much priority, even though there was evidence that suggests the students were adequately equipped through the teaching of information skills. Abstract

Over the last decade, an increasing number of academic institutions have built satellite campuses and developed online courses to meet the needs of distance learners. As these academic institutions have expanded, demand for library service has increased significantly. In an attempt to expand its course offerings to distance learners, Regent University began offering online courses during the early 1990s, and it also developed a new satellite campus. As the Regent University Library has explored new and varied ways to serve students on the new satellite campus and other distance learners, the implementation of services has been challenging, but rewarding, for the library staff.  相似文献

Abstract

Using the Internet as an information source is a fairly new proposition for most researchers, but the depth and breadth of coverage on the net mark it as an important research tool. While the prospect of having volumes of data at one' s fingertips may seem like a dream come true to researchers, it must be recognized that certain precautions need to be taken. Websites should be evaluated and judged before their content is accepted for use. The evaluation of websites contained herein will show that assessment of Internet-based information is necessary. It is also a model of a method by which to perform these evaluations. Also evident from these evaluations will be that as long as certain steps are taken to ensure the dependability of the information sources, there is no reason to doubt the validity of the Internet as a source of information, both scholarly and general.  相似文献

This article explains the IPT process and Olivet Nazarene University's IPT program development using HTML forms, C programming, and OCLC formatting. This paper describes the emergence of popular information networks, the resource centre forums in South Africa in the 1980s and 1990s. Such forums have been established virtually countrywide. Collectively they have identified priorities for their regional development and national co-operation. They represent a significant response to a need for alternative library and information networks to serve the struggle for democracy. Abstract

The National Commission on Libraries and Information Science published recommendations for a national information policy in 1976, and concerns regarding the protection of privacy and equal public access to online information were introduced. From the mid 1970s to the early 1990s, federal government agencies were beginning to publish materials and maintain records electronically. Most current U.S. government information was available on the Internet by the late 1990s, and depository libraries were required to provide workstations that would facilitate access to documents. Documents librarians, already concerned with the lack of attention to archiving online federal information, were provided with an example of the vulnerability of online publications in the early 2000s when federal agency Web sites were made inaccessible-quickly and easily. The possibility that too much government information was available to anyone with access to the Internet was becoming a national concern. Using government documents as resources, this article retraces the events that were occurring in federal government agencies during the movement of government information to the Internet.  相似文献

The Internet Public Library is an experimental educational initiative of the University of Michigan School of Information. The author, a Michigan alumna, argues that the Internet Public Library can play a role in the education of reference librarians, with particular attention to the traditional reference skills it fosters. She discusses her own experience with the IPL and QRC, its digital reference tool, as a library student, positing that the value of the IPL lies in the way it renders individual aspects of the reference process explicit and forces its users to examine them piece by piece.  相似文献

Abstract

Albanian-language publishing in Kosova during the 1990-1999 period was very much affected first by Serbian censorship and persecution, then by the war. The situation has improved since the fighting stopped in the summer of 1999, with most of the seven main publishers having reopened. The author reviews major newspapers, news magazines and other periodicals from Kosova, then lists books by important authors brought out by various publishers. The Internet has proven an important means of communicating news and culture, especially during the recent disruptions; several sites are listed. A section follows showing some significant library collections of Kosovar Albanian material. The author suggests acquiring such publications directly from their publishers and gives contact information. Finally, there is an English-language bibliography of recommended reading about Kosova in general.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In 1998, a group of adult library patrons and individuals in Loudoun County, Virginia, brought a suit against library trustees, board members, and the director of the county’s public library, claiming that the library’s use of Internet blocking software was an infringement on their First Amendment rights, leading to the federal court case Mainstream Loudoun v. Board of Trustees of the Loudoun County Library (1998). Using an in-depth case study approach and going beyond a review of the court documents, the author uses a series of qualitative interviews with individuals connected to the court case to gather more in-depth information regarding events surrounding this case of censorship in public libraries and investigate the phenomenon of librarians acting as censors themselves.  相似文献

Abstract

Library education in Jordan falls into three categories: professional, at the post-graduate level, subprofessional, at the community colleges level, and in-service training. The primary institution concerned with in-service training is JLA. Detailed accounts of programmes, syllabus, curriculum and course contents offered at all levels are given. The historical account of the library movement in Jordan indicates that Jordan’s libraries are in transition from traditional to advanced library and information functions and practice. Continuous course evaluations and assessments resulted in the development of curricula endeavouring to advance trends in library and information science. Thus, more libraries are implementing computer systems. The post-graduate curriculum introduces courses on advanced topics in information science and technology besides library automation. JLA is shifting its emphasis towards specialized courses on computerization and library software packages such as CDS/ISIS. Community colleges’ library education has also changed to include advanced topics.

Statistical analysis of students and trainees at all levels is given. The impact of information technology on several library aspects and information services is highlighted to disclose what should be incorporated into the new library education curricula to equip the future generation of library and information professionals to practise the profession in Jordan.  相似文献
