Bibliographic records in the Innovative library catalog at Kent State University Libraries had fallen out of synchronization with the Libraries’ holdings represented on OCLC's WorldCat database. The Libraries made a decision to undertake a batch reclamation project with OCLC to re-synch their holdings on WorldCat. This project was beneficial for both parties. OCLC received a clean copy of the Libraries’ database, while the Libraries were able to improve the quality of their local bibliographic data and address problem areas in the catalog. This case study is intended to provide a reference for other libraries considering OCLC batch reclamation projects. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Academic libraries serve great numbers of distance learners and must address the unique challenges faced by these students. Technology can bridge the gap in terms of access and use of library resources. Academic librarians working with distance students must examine their student population, determine the needs of their users, and be prepared to adapt technology available to meet those needs. Many academic libraries have adapted Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) ILLiad to allow better support of distance learners. AbstractPCC and the Music Library Association (MLA) and Music OCLC Users Group (MOUG) have a long history of coordinating and collaborating on standards, best practices, and training of the music cataloging community. The impact of these collaborations on the formation and structure of the PCC is found throughout the organization, particularly in the PCC funnels, but also in the basic concept of a cooperative cataloging community. OCLC’s WorldCat now holds more than 320 million bibliographic records with some 2-plus billion holdings linked to the bibliographic records. The vast majority of the world’s libraries, archives, and museums rely on OCLC as the primary source for bibliographic records. Compared to all other options, OCLC is clearly the very large elephant in the room. OCLC provides a broad range of services, including WorldShare Metadata Services (cataloging); WorldShare Interlibrary Loan (sharing resources); WorldShare Management Services (cloud-based integrated library system); WorldCat Discovery Services; and CONTENTdm? (management of digital collections). This article explores the available options for obtaining cataloging records from alternative sources by considering four factors: breadth, quality, ease of use, and costs of use of the bibliographic database. 相似文献

Union listing of serials on OCLC can bring about an increase in interlibrary loan and turn-around time when implemented at a university library. Formerly accessible as a subsystem of OCLC, union listing is now available on Connexion Browser as MARC 21 holdings data. Immediately following a batch load of OCLC union listing records at medium-sized Louisiana university library, it was found that lending requests sent to the library were up 10% for all materials and up 13% for serials. An increase in borrower requests from patrons at the library was also observed when interlibrary loan request buttons were inserted into citation entries found on EBSCO host university databases. 相似文献

During the past several years the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) noted increasing concern from the library community regarding the future of cataloging. In response to this concern and to the rapidly changing metadata environment, OCLC is taking steps to further a paradigm shift toward early acquisition of metadata in WorldCat directly from the entities responsible for content purchased by libraries—chiefly the publisher supply chain. This shift in thinking requires the acknowledgement that metadata is dynamic and will change over time and relies upon the automated capture of metadata early in the publishing cycle as well as automated processes to help make the early metadata “good enough.” 相似文献

ABSTRACT On May 19, 2009, the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Members Council held its 90th and final meeting. It was the end of an era that began in 1977, when the Ohio College Library Center changed its name to OCLC and adopted a new governance structure that extended membership in the cooperative to libraries outside Ohio. This paper reports the results of a study using the 1993 Depository Libraries Shipping Lists for microfiche U.S. documents (approximately 24,000 documents) to determine the availability and timeliness of microfiche bibliographic records from OCLC. A random sample of 931 records was searched on the OCLC bibliographic database in November 1994. Results reveal that records were available for 44 percent of the sample within one month of the shipping list date. By three months after the shipping list date, cataloging copy was accessible on OCLC for 76 percent of the sample. Six months following the shipping list date, 89 percent of the sample had bibliographic records on OCLC; and one year after the shipping list date, there was cataloging copy for 97 percent of the sample. This study demonstrates that cataloging copy for many U.S. federal microfiche documents is available in a timely manner from the OCLC database. 相似文献

The session explored how collaboration among libraries, suppliers, and the OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC) cooperative can address some of the problems being faced with the management of electronic resources. Examples of specific challenges that impact budgets and services are: libraries’ reliance on multiple non-interoperable systems; the difficulties in getting and maintaining high quality and timely metadata; and the issues with managing workflows that cross system and staff boundaries.
