The study explores students' use of language in the process of making sense of genetics concepts. It aims to analyze primary
and secondary discourses, and examine the relationship between social practices and discourses. Sixth-grade students were
interviewed before and during four weeks instruction on genetics. General trends were detected regarding border crossing between
discourse communities and the difficulties and ease of moving among informal experience, social practices, primary discourse
of family, friends and community, and secondary discourse of science and school instruction. Two comprehensive case summaries
– Debbie and Sam – are presented in the paper. Debbie took what she experienced in her social life as criteria to discuss
how people resembled one another. However, the language practiced in the classroom was different from Debbie's familiar language.
Debbie thus experienced a conflict between primary and secondary discourses. Sam's school education and home environment provided
an aligned social context with rich scientific ties that nurtured his use of secondary discourse practices in thinking and
learning science. We recommend that science instruction needs to build a learning community where students' discourses will
be recognized and border crossings between discourses facilitated in the process of learning science.

A Survey of Reading Attitudes was administered to 431 intermediate grade students enrolled in three inner-city elementary schools which are part of the Columbus (Ohio) Public Schools. The Survey is a multidimensional instrument which provides measures for eight different dimensions of reading attitude. An ANOVA was performed on scores for each of the eight dimensions to identify developmental changes in reading attitude during the intermediate grades. The results of the ANOVA’s and post hoc comparisons indicated significant patterns of change for the following dimensions: Expressed Reading Difficulty, Reading as Direct Reinforcement, Silent vs Oral Reading, and Comics. In contrast, the Reading as Enjoyment, Alternative Learning Modes, and Reading Group dimensions failed to show appreciable developmental changes. 相似文献

Coursework masters degrees in Australia have experienced rapid, decentralised growth since deregulation at the end of the
1980s. The result is an extraordinarily high level of diversity and some confusion as to standards, strategic positioning,
purpose and educational approaches. Throughout this period of growth, a sense that large-scale (often distance-education based)
collaboration between universities and with industry would be beneficial has not always led to successful outcomes. Using
a new collaborative, industry-funded postgraduate coursework program as a case study, this paper describes the issues that
decision-makers need to address and evaluates the challenges and benefits of the coursework masters in higher education. The
outcomes of industry surveys, student interviews and action research suggest that postgraduate coursework can facilitate technology
transfer and aid capacity building, through mechanisms similar to ‘mode 2’ research. With some additional systems to ensure
sustainability and standards, this could position coursework masters to be uniquely valuable nationally.

A common missense mutation (1470T > A) in gene SLC16A1 responsible for an amino acid substitution in protein MCT1 has been associated with differential lactate transport and hence, differences in physical performance and muscle injuries in relation to physical exercise. This study describes, for the first time, the worldwide variation of MCT1 variant 1470T > A at an intra- and inter-continental level. Two thousand five hundred and four individual genotypes of 26 populations clustered in 5 population groups have been analysed with data downloaded from the public database 1000 Genomes Phase 3 Browser. Several parameters of population differentiation and structure have been explored as well as selection signatures in the whole gene. Allele T, the common variant, shows extremely high values in Sub-Saharan African groups (frequencies 86–91%) as compared with the remaining world regions (69–49%). TT genotype also predominates in African groups, showing significant differences with the rest of world populations. In view of the evidence that the TT genotype is associated with clinical implications and a better predisposition to sprint/power performances, we suggest that the high presence of the TT genotype in African populations should be taken into account in future association studies at both medical and sports fields. 相似文献
