The role of outdoor recreation in family enrichment

Abstract

The family is the fundamental unit in society and perhaps the oldest and most important of all human institutions. Several studies have indicated a positive correlation between strong, successful families and family participation in outdoor recreational activities. This paper addresses the role of structured outdoor recreation programming in family enrichment. Findings from two studies based in the United States are presented: one on the effect of a one-day family outdoor adventure program on parental and child perceptions of family functioning and the other from a qualitative inquiry into the meaning of family residential camping experiences. The first study collected both quantitative and qualitative data from 24 families who participated in an 8-hour outdoor adventure program. The second study utilized structured interviews with 11 families participating in a residential camp experience. Findings from both studies demonstrate that structured outdoor family recreation programming has a strong positive relationship with family strength. Furthermore, findings indicate that the type of outdoor adventure activities being used in the treatment of dysfunctional and maladaptive families is also effective in providing family enrichment experiences.  相似文献   

Acculturation and academic achievement of rural to urban migrant youth: The role of school satisfaction and family closeness

China's 'tidal wave' of rural to urban migration has had a tremendous impact on the educational outcomes of its children. It remains unexplored how and when do migrant children’s experience of acculturation following arrival in the place of settlement influence their academic achievement. This study used a stratified cross-sectional sample of 2412 Chinese migrant children and adolescents aged 10–18 (Mean = 14, 45 % female) to investigate the role of school satisfaction and family closeness in the relationship between acculturation patterns and academic achievement. Acculturation patterns are derived from the bidimensional model proposed by Berry (2005). The results indicated that integration had a positive association with concurrent academic achievement. School satisfaction was a mediator between integration and academic achievement. Furthermore, the full mediation of school satisfaction was only supported when there was a high level of family closeness. Findings from this study underline the usefulness of the bi-dimensional model in understanding the individual differences in academic achievement and suggest greater attention to the cultural variations in interpersonal functioning at the family and school context.  相似文献

我国现有的生育政策是马克思主义的人口理论与中国的社会现实相结合的产物。以“提倡晚婚晚育,少生优生,提倡一对夫妇只生育一个孩子”为主要内容的现有生育政策的实施有效地遏止了我国快速增长的人口发展势头,有力地推动了我国经济建设的顺利发展。然而我国控制人口增长的工作依然任重而道远。我们要在坚持现有的人口生育政策不放松的前提下,适当调整和缩紧现有生育政策中的不合理、过于宽松的部分,以促进我国社会主义现代化建设的全面、和谐、可持续地发展。  相似文献

移动通信技术与信息技术的融合带动了移动计算技术的蓬勃发展,随着各类移动终端的普及应用,人们迫切需要探索新型的基于移动计算技术的应用。文章以移动计算技术家庭教育应用为背景,侧重移动计算技术在儿童成长家庭记录方面的应用前景研究。研究结果表明,随着家庭教育水平的提升,人们对于系统化的、便捷化的儿童成长记录支持系统需求迫切,而移动计算技术所带来的多媒体支持能力、便捷的可携带性和情景特性支持能力为构建新型的儿童成长家庭记录系统提供了可能。  相似文献   

西北农村家庭教育投资影响因素分析——以甘肃农村为例

基于甘肃农村地区的实地调研对农村地区家庭教育投资的影响因素进行了定量分析和探讨。分析结果说明:影响西北农村地区家庭教育投资有很多因素,有经济因素也有非经济的因素。其中非经济因素是影响家庭教育投资的重要因素。家长的民族、宗教信仰、文化程度、传统文化、教育观念以及教育价格等因素直接影响着农村家庭教育投资状况,而孩子数量、孩子性别、打工潮、大学生找工作难等因素并不能直接影响到家长对孩子的教育投资状况。家庭的经济条件状况对家庭教育投资的影响是一个复杂的因素,家庭经济状况并不直接对家庭教育投资力度产生明显影响,但是当家庭经济状况达到相当水平时,家庭教育投资水平会明显提高。  相似文献
