ABSTRACT The current study examined the case of religious students who opted to study in a secular teacher-training college despite the fact that there are religious colleges that would have suited their needs. This phenomenon is unusual because the education system in Israel is segregated and each educational sector has its own teacher-training colleges. Findings of this qualitative study indicate that the majority of participants did not wish to depart from the religious framework, but rather sought to forge reciprocal relations with the secular society and carve a space for themselves where they could express their identity, which does not entirely conform to the demands of the religious society. These findings highlight an interesting dynamic that developing between students from a minority group and the mainstream secular society in Israel that promotes multiculturalism. An academic campus that adopts a multicultural approach is a safe space for minority students, whose sectorial framework does not fully provide for all their needs. 相似文献

Substantial medical data, such as discharge summaries and operative reports are stored in electronic textual form. Databases
containing free-text clinical narratives reports often need to be retrieved to find relevant information for clinical and
research purposes. The context of negation, a negative finding, is of special importance, since many of the most frequently
described findings are such. When searching free-text narratives for patients with a certain medical condition, if negation
is not taken into account, many of the documents retrieved will be irrelevant. Hence, negation is a major source of poor precision
in medical information retrieval systems. Previous research has shown that negated findings may be difficult to identify if
the words implying negations (negation signals) are more than a few words away from them. We present a new pattern learning
method for automatic identification of negative context in clinical narratives reports. We compare the new algorithm to previous
methods proposed for the same task, and show its advantages: accuracy improvement compared to other machine learning methods,
and much faster than manual knowledge engineering techniques with matching accuracy. The new algorithm can be applied also
to further context identification and information extraction tasks.

This examination revealed performance deficiencies in the administrative realm that required mainly a noninstructional intervention. In this essay, Oded Zipory assigns a different meaning to presentism in education: one that signifies respect for the present, especially for the actual student in his here‐and‐now. Zipory suggests that the key component of such a presentist pedagogy is interest and argues that focusing on children's current and possible interests instead of, or at least in addition to, working toward their expected future achievement is both respectful of children as meaning‐makers and promising in regard to their autonomy. First, he lays out principles for a presentist pedagogy of interest. Following Harry Frankfurt's work on the concept of care, Zipory suggests that schools should pay attention to the fact that students care about various things in addition to focusing on children's required knowledge and desired behavior. He then shows that being interested in something is a particular form of caring about it, and that this form is closely connected to education and learning. After showing the importance of interests to education, Zipory presents the challenges to incorporating them into a curriculum, and, drawing on P. S. Wilson's work, suggests strategies for coping with these challenges. He concludes by addressing the temporal tension embedded in the word “interest” itself and suggests that, in order to distance education from instrumentalization and commodification, a present‐oriented meaning of interest should be adopted. 相似文献

This is a two-phase research process in a wiki environment. The first phase explored (1) the significance of peer-feedback on students’ academic performance on a specific task in a wiki environment, (2) three types of peer-feedback and (3) students’ constraints on offering meaningful feedback to their peers. The objective of phase two was to determine the reasons why students refrain from peer-feedback. Significant correlation exists between the willingness to give feedback and the willingness to receive feedback. Significant correlation also exists between the difficulty of giving feedback and the difficulty of receiving feedback. Female students tend to consider feedback as the teacher's responsibility more than male students. Religious beliefs did not have any significant effect on any of the parameters tested. The results indicate that traditional students tend to be more conservative regarding feedback. There are worrying implications to pre-service teachers’ refraining from giving feedback. 相似文献

This study publishes a newly identified letter to Moses Maimonides reconstructed from three Geniza fragments. The letter describes an inheritance dispute over real estate in the Egyptian delta town of al-Ma?alla. Having a letter written by a litigant provides information on what took place outside of court, information that is often missing from legal records. This allows us to explore the dynamics of a dispute in which one side makes a legal move, and the other counters with a move outside of court, and vice versa. These manoeuvrings included action in Jewish and Muslim courts, appeal to a jurisconsult, social pressure and performative disregard to the boundaries of the religious communities. As a result, we can conceive of the legal arena not only as encompassing different legal institutions but also as a social space constituted by the ways litigants experienced and interacted with legal institutions. 相似文献

An exo-atmospheric interception scenario between an accelerating missile and its target is investigated. It is assumed that the maneuvering acceleration is obtained by instantaneous rotation of the missile's body to the required attitude. Two different guidance laws are derived for such an interceptor using the sliding mode control methodology. The difference is in the definition of the sliding surface enforcing different trajectories for the interceptor. It is shown that if this surface is chosen as the zero-effort-miss of the well-known proportional navigation guidance law, then the missile is commanded to point its acceleration vector along the line-of-sight and consequently fly along a curved trajectory. For the second guidance law, a unique sliding surface is chosen enforcing the missile to fly on a straight line towards collision, after the initial heading error is nulled. The performance of the guidance laws is analyzed and compared using a nonlinear two dimensional simulation. It is shown that on top of enforcing a different flight geometry for the interceptor, the use of the new guidance to collision sliding mode guidance law can enhance the capture zone of the interceptor. 相似文献
