This paper provides a foundational framework to bring into conversation indigenous world views in reimagining universities. Highlighting a specific indigenous world view, the university is presented as a site for critical conversation and transformative praxis. We discuss the workplace experiences of indigenous staff in a university and infer from these how management practices related to indigenous staff could be enhanced. Building on our study of Māori academic and administrative staff in a New Zealand university, an indigenous typology and a Wero or challenge matrix is offered, which locates different positions and actions that universities adhere to or seek to emulate. The paper argues for universities to reimagine their policies and practices by drawing from the complex richness of indigenous world views.  相似文献

For many companies the remaining barriers to adopting cloud computing services are related to security. One of these significant security issues is the lack of auditability for various aspects of security in the cloud computing environment. In this paper we look at the issue of cloud computing security auditing from three perspectives: user auditing requirements, technical approaches for (data) security auditing and current cloud service provider capabilities for meeting audit requirements. We also divide specific auditing issues into two categories: infrastructure security auditing and data security auditing. We find ultimately that despite a number of techniques available to address user auditing concerns in the data auditing area, cloud providers have thus far only focused on infrastructure security auditing concerns.  相似文献

This article reports the second stage of a study examining an academic partnership in which Bangladeshi doctoral students in a western university focus their research in the grounded context of Bangladesh and investigate the processes for change. After briefly outlining the previous published stage which examined the academic trade in higher education with developing countries, the article builds on the concept of fair academic trade to critically reflect on the development of a doctoral learning community, a publication project and three specific doctoral studies. The importance of the laboratories for the study of engineering problems is manifold. At the undergraduate level it provides an opportunity for the students to get an impression of the basic principles of engineering. At the postgraduate level it becomes an instrument for advanced level study and for the solutions to real-life engineering problems. Level of emphasis by an individual engineering institution on basic engineering, interdisciplinary aspects of engineering and relevance to international, national and local industrial trends effects the policy to establish the engineering laboratories. However, a core facility, for the teaching of the most basic principals of relevant field of engineering should be a common feature of all the laboratories associated with individual subject area. In this research paper an approach for establishing engineering laboratories is presented. It discusses the relation between the syllabus of appropriate level of study and the equipment required in the laboratory, physical planning for the laboratory, sequential and parallel approaches for establishing the laboratories, the functional capacity of laboratories, the organizational flexibility of the laboratories, the cost factor and the recurring expenditure. It suggests ways of utilizing the laboratory for effective teaching and research through optimal use of the above factors.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of Ethnoscience instruction and moderating effects of school location and parental educational status on students' attitude to science. It employed pretest-posttest, non-equivalent control group quasiexperimental design. Participants were 352 Junior Secondary School 1 (aged 9–12 years) students from two schools, each in urban and rural areas of Ìbàdàn, southwestern Nigeria. Instruments used are: Teachers Instructional Guide on Ethnoscience instruction, Teachers Instructional Guide on Modified Lecture Method and Attitude Toward Science Scale (r?=?0.86). Three null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance. Significant main effect of treatment on attitude to science (F(1, 347)?=?296, p?<?0.05) was recorded, with Ethnoscience instruction group performing better than the Modified Lecture Method group. Effect size of treatment was strong (η2 p?=?0.46). Also recorded were significant main effects of school location (F(1, 347)?=?10.2, p?<?.05) and parental educational status (F(1, 347?=?3.37), p <?0.05) on students' attitude to science with weak effect sizes (η2 p?=?0.029 and η2 p?=?0.019 respectively). Learners in rural schools performed better than those in urban schools and those from lowly educated parents had better performance than highly educated parents. Ethnoscience instruction promoted learners' attitude to science. Therefore, its use in educational instruction, especially among traditional science learners, should be explored.  相似文献

Recent research in concrete analysis and design has revealed that the shear capacity contributed by concrete correlates well with the neutral axis depth. While nonlinear analysis calculation of the neutral axis depth is trivial for reinforced concrete beams, it is iterative for prestressed concrete beams and does not lend itself to straightforward hand calculations. In this study, a program is developed to simulate the response of prestressed concrete rectangular sections subjected to monotonic bending taking into account cracking, yielding and ultimate states. This program is used to benchmark a simplified analytical procedure devised to perform the same task by hand. Accordingly, critical observations made to a large pool of experimental and analytical results reveal that the moment-curvature and moment-extreme fiber strain can be accurately modeled as trilinear relationships. The four key points that define the trilinear functions (initial, cracking, yielding and ultimate) may be computed analytically from simple equations derived based on consistent assumptions with the true behavior. Once the simplified analysis is performed, the computation of the neutral axis depth becomes a simple hand calculation. A parametric study was performed to further simplify the analytical procedure by computing the four key points that define the trilinear functions through linear relationships that were derived based on regression analysis of a large number of beam solutions. The neutral axis depth was calculated using the analytical and the simplified procedures for three beams with different ratios of prestressing steel and concrete strength. The results compared well with the iterative numerical procedure.  相似文献

Abstract

Purpose: This article reviews the experience of ICT applications as a tool for putting research derived knowledge into use for innovation in South Asia.

Design/methodology/approach: The article uses the contemporary understanding of communication and innovation in reviewing the experience of ICTs in putting new knowledge into use in South Asia.

Findings: The findings from this study suggest that ICTs in general have not contributed effectively to the challenge of putting new knowledge into use as they are mostly used to support traditional communication tasks — such as information dissemination and training. The article argues that this under-utilisation of the potential of ICTs could be due to: a lack of appreciation of the new communication-intermediation tasks required for innovation, underestimation of the roles of intermediaries and their capacities for innovation and lack of networks needed for communities to make use of the information provided through ICTs.

Practical implications: Although the understanding of communication, innovation and extension has changed substantially in the past two decades, there is still a big gap between theory and practice. This article contends that this gap needs to be bridged if ICTs are to effectively contribute to putting new knowledge into use.

Originality/value: The article manifests the necessity for ICT based initiatives to be embedded into the renewed understanding of communication and innovation and it moves ICT related debates from merely a success story to a pragmatic world of communication and innovation process.  相似文献
