Classroom     
In this section of Resonance, we invite readers to pose questions likely to be raised in a classroom situation. We may suggest strategies for dealing with them, or invite responses, or both. “Classroom” is equally a forum for raising broader issues and sharing personal experiences and viewpoints on matters related to teaching and learning science. Benzene is a special molecule. There is hardly any other molecule that has captured the imagination of generations of chemists. It was isolated first in 1825 byMichael Faraday but took more than 100 years before the actual structure was nailed down. This article intends to highlight one crucial discovery: the actual determination of the crystal structure of hexamethylbenzenewhich solved the riddle about the structure of benzene conclusively.  相似文献

Recent studies show that nearly 40% of the 118 elements that make up everything – from the chemist’s arsenal to a variety of consumer products, are facing depleting supplies. Based on this data, in 2011, Mike Pitts and his colleagues at the Chemistry Innovation Knowledge Transfer Network developed a new type of periodic table. Their analysis revealed that 44 elements are facing limited supply, or are under the threat of becoming scarce or inaccessible. These includes all of the rare earth elements, as well as zinc, gallium, germanium, helium, silver, and even phosphorus. The Royal Society of Chemistry has also published a color-coded periodic table, indicating the ‘endangered elements’. The objective of this article is to draw attention to this issue, and create awareness about the scientific, social and economic impacts of this problem.  相似文献

Media is abuzz with advertisements of multitude of antibacterial products ranging from toothpastes, toilet soaps, and handwashes to disinfectants and cosmetics. While, almost every manufacturer claims that their product has 100% efficiency in eliminating microbes, the truth really is questionable. On 2 September 2016, the Food and Drug Administration of USA, banned 19 compounds used in antibacterial products. These ingredients, as per FDA experts, are not effective as antibacterials as they are claimed to be, and few of them even have adverse effects on humans. India is the largest consumer of such antibacterial products, but is yet to take any regulatory measures against these products. This article focus on the need of creating large scale public awareness about these products.  相似文献

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) prevent freezing of the body fluids of plants and animals inhabiting low temperature environments. Recently their role in cold adaptation of bacteria is also coming to the limelight. This article discusses some of these recent findings. Bacterial resistance to antibiotics poses a serious challenge to the prospect of chemotherapy. Rational use of antibiotics is most desirable but it cannot provide a permanent solution to the problem. In this article the biochemical and genetic basis of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is discussed with examples. An on-chip lectin microarray based glycomic approach is employed to identify glyco markers for different gastritis and gastric cancer. Changes in protein glycosylation have impact on biological function and carcinogenesis. These altered glycosylation patterns in serum proteins and membrane proteins of tumor cells can be unique markers of cancer progression and hence have been exploited to diagnose various stages of cancer through lectin microarray technology. In the present work, we aimed to study the alteration of glycan structure itself in different stages of gastritis and gastric cancer thoroughly. In order to perform the study from both serum and tissue glycoproteins in an efficient and high-throughput manner, we indigenously developed and employed lectin microarray integrated on a microfluidic lab-on-a-chip platform. We analyzed serum and gastric biopsy samples from 8 normal, 15 chronic Type-B gastritis, 10 chronic Type-C gastritis, and 6 gastric adenocarcinoma patients and found that the glycoprofile obtained from tissue samples was more distinctive than that of the sera samples. We were able to establish signature glycoprofile for the three disease groups, that were absent in healthy normal individuals. In addition, our findings elucidated certain novel signature glycan expression in chronic gastritis and gastric cancer. In silico analysis showed that glycoprofile of chronic gastritis and gastric adenocarcinoma formed close clusters, confirming the previously hypothesized linkage between them. This signature can be explored further as gastric cancer marker to develop novel analytical tools and obtain in-depth understanding of the disease prognosis.  相似文献

On 29 September 2016, the Indian army conducted a surgical strike along the India–Pakistan border. The mainstream news media in India followed the event with assertive nationalistic rhetoric. What was supposed to be a covert military operation against terrorism became morphed into political rhetoric aggravated by the unwarranted jingoism of television news channels and social media. The coverage of the strike on television news is typically characterized by a confluence of militant nationalist discourses, and the ideologically imbued labelling of specific communities. Within this context, drawing from the close reading of the coverage, this article analyses how Indian television news sustains the construction of a fictive “we”, conflated with the government policies and military strategies, and speaks for a supposedly homogeneous national consensus that also consciously obscures the dissent through minority voices. The article emphasizes the relationship between communities, formal politics, and the supposedly non-political spaces and practices of news media in India.  相似文献

This case study investigated whether data gathered from discussions within the social media provide a reliable basis for a biomedical resources recommendation system. Using a search query to mine text from Google Blogs and Discussions, a ranking of biomedical resources was determined based on those most frequently mentioned. To establish quality, these results were compared with rankings by subject experts. An overall agreement between the frequency of social media discussions and subject expert recommendations was observed when identifying key bioinformatics and consumer health resources. Testing the method in more than one biomedical area implies this procedure could be employed across different subjects.  相似文献
