Drawing on 30 semi-structured interviews with women academics based in London higher education institutions in the UK, this paper investigates the gendered nature of the prestige economy in academia. We explore how mid-career academic women strategise their career development and the opportunities and barriers they perceive, particularly in relation to the accrual of academic esteem. Concept maps were used to facilitate dialogue about career plans and provided an artefact from the interviewee’s own perspective. The analysis draws on the concept of prestige, or the indicators of esteem that help advance academic careers, against the backdrop of a higher education context which increasingly relies on quantitative data to make judgements about academic excellence. The interviews indicated that women generally feel that men access status and indicators of esteem more easily than they do. Many women also had ambivalent feelings about gaining recognition through prestige: they understood the importance of status and knew the ‘rules of the game’, but were critical of these rules and sometimes reluctant to overtly pursue prestige. The findings are valuable for understanding how women’s slow access to the highest levels of higher education institutions is shaped by the value that organisations place on individual status.  相似文献

本文从社会性别和国际比较的视角对我国高校女教师队伍的发展现状进行了分析。论文以1994至2004年为研究范围,首先对我国高校女教职工队伍的基本构成及变化趋势进行分析,在此基础上,从性别视角对高校专任教师队伍的职称结构、学位结构和年龄结构进行量化研究,并进一步从女教授占教授总数比例的角度将我国女教师队伍置于国际视野之下进行比较,从而较为全面地对我国女教师队伍的发展状况在国际坐标中作出清晰的定位,最后,论文分析了女性在高级职称中占比例低的机构制度原因,同时指出高校女教师发展的现实策略。  相似文献

This article is concerned with the management of the symbolic life of academic organizations, an area strangely neglected in discussions of academic management. The adoption by higher education of the techniques of market-based businesses comes at a time when these businesses are being criticized for lack of attention to organizational culture. Academic institutions may best be understood as value-rational organizations grounded in strong cultures described as ideologies and belief systems. Some thoughts on the management of academic culture, on the management of meaning and social integration, are developed.This is a revised version of a paper originally presented at the Fifth International Conference on Higher Education, University of Lancaster, 2 September 1981. This paper examines the changing status of women faculty through an analysis of statistics on China’s universities from 1994 to 2004. This paper first presents the trend of a drastic increase in women faculty members in recent years. Further details on the academic ranks of women faculty, their age and highest degrees obtained are also presented. A comparison of female representation in faculty ranks is made between China and a few selected countries. Lastly, this paper attempts to account for the low percentage of female professors in higher education. Recommendations for the professional development for women faculty are made in the end.   相似文献

对《高等教育研究》(2001-2010年)的载文分析发现,我国高等教育研究领域还是一个以男性为主的话语结构,女性参与率低,论文被引用率低,并且越往学术界的上层女性越处于不利地位。学术界的社会分层虽主要遵循普遍主义,但社会的性别角色观念仍会影响学术界的判断以及女性的自我判断和努力程度,加上学术工作的"男性工作模式"假定、学术评价的"劣势累积"效应、学术竞争的"锦标赛"制,以及女性承担生育职责和过多的家务劳动等原因,女性走向学术顶端更难。  相似文献

This article, which examines the conflicting role perceptions of ranking women administrators in Russian higher education and research organizations, is constructed around in-depth interviews of nine administrators. In a male-dominated academic culture in a country in which transition is leading to a patriarchal agenda for returning women to their ''proper'' place in the home, high-level women academic administrators are confronted with a number of conflicting demands forcing them to adopt a ''phantasmic superwoman identity''.  相似文献

This article begins by recognizing that Finnish women, like those in the other Nordic countries, were admitted to universities relatively early. Although they now constitute some 52 percent of enrolled students in Finnish higher education and 47 percent of the labour force, they have lagged behind men in terms of obtaining academic employment and even more so with regard to being appointed to leadership positions in universities and in other academic organizations. A combination of factors accounts for this situation: the tendency to channel aspiring women academics into non‐scientific fields, the failure of women academics to be included in the informal professional networks, the deprecating attitudes of male academics towards the research results of women, and in general, a societal power structure which favours men. Finally, an economic climate which is leading to cutbacks in higher education budgets is creating a situation which makes catching up by women academics next to impossible. Only major structural changes in Finnish society will lead to further progress for Finnish women in academic careers.  相似文献

Why, the author asks, despite the women's movement, policy initiatives, the enhanced participation of women in higher education, particularly as students, are women so under-represented in the higher strata of higher education and in the e ´lite professions in general. She seeks the answer to her question in an analysis of micropolitics, particularly the micropolitics of gender in organizations in general and in higher education and the learning society, in particular. Through the manipulation of gendered power relationships at micropolitical level the traditional, and flawed, power structures of higher education persist and graft themselves onto the new concept of the learning society. Notions of leadership, superiority, and academic excellence continue to be characterized as masculine.  相似文献

A series of national conferences focusing on faculty renewal is described in this paper. These conferences were attended by over 450 faculty members, faculty development professionals, and academic administrators representing 188 institutions and higher education organizations in 39 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, and the Virgin Islands. The programs of these conferences demonstrate that a wide range of activities promoting faculty renewal are ongoing in a variety of institutional settings throughout the country and examination of the conference programs and participants provides additional insight into the topic of faculty renewal in higher education.William K. Jackson is associate director of the Office of Instructional Development at the University of Georgia and a founding co-chair of the National Renewal Conferences. He holds graduate degrees in physics and educational administration (higher education) from the University of South Carolina and has served as an academic administrator at both a private liberal arts college and a public research university. 基层学术组织作为学术"重镇",在高校的发展演变与内部改革中扮演重要角色。国内对大学基层学术组织的研究主要集中于三个方面:大学基层学术组织的内涵、特征与历程;大学基层学术组织权力结构、发展机制的理论;大学基层学术组织的改革与发展的理论创新与实证。国外相关研究则集中于对高等教育系统本身或者大学组织的整体特性,未将大学基层学术组织作为独立对象进行专门探讨,但他们介绍的大学学术组织的发展经验以及研究所采用的科学方法,形成的独特见解和取得的特色成果仍然具有借鉴意义。  相似文献

Despite sustained efforts to promote engineering careers to young women, it remains the most male-dominated academic discipline in Europe. This paper will provide an overview of UK data and research on women in engineering higher education, within the context of Europe. Comparisons between data from European countries representing various regions of Europe will highlight key differences and similarities between these nations in terms of women in engineering. Also, drawing on qualitative research the paper will explore UK students’ experiences of gender, with a particular focus on the decision to study engineering and their experiences in higher education.  相似文献

The paper is based on research into the position of women academic staff in a sample of colleges of higher education in England. This reveals a pattern of entrenched sexual inequality in these institutions, especially at middle and senior management levels. A similar pattern has been found in the university and polytechnic sectors of higher education. However, in the colleges there is an even greater disjunction between the sexual distribution of students and staff. The research is related to recent literature on equal opportunities in education. It is argued that the formal curriculum of equal opportunities is continually subverted by a hidden curriculum of unequal opportunities. Finally, several approaches to positive intervention are suggested.  相似文献

在过去几十年里,世界高等教育发展呈现出趋同趋势。多样化办学模式的出现和市场力量的介入是其显著特征。在市场力量发挥积极作用的同时,高等教育发展过程中也出现了"经济主义"倾向。经济主义的主要表现是:其一,在知识经济或所谓新经济条件下,高等教育的经济功能被强化,由经济价值界定高等教育的目标。其二,由经济关系界定高等教育机构的外部关系。其三,由经济投入界定高等教育的内部质量。其四,由经济利益诉求界定学术人员的行为驱动力。经济主义对高等教育的性质和大学的身份具有深远影响。潜在的结果是,由于夸大高等教育的经济价值使大学的功能窄化;由于服从于外部的现实利益而使大学的独立性受损;由于大学组织与经济组织的边界模糊化而改变大学成员的行为,进而改变着大学的身份。  相似文献

高等继续教育在高等教育大众化发展历程中发挥着重要作用。随着现代教育技术的不断进步,天津高等继续教育的基本格局已经发生了变化,呈现出高等学历继续教育规模偏低、非学历继续教育亟待提高、远程教育迅速发展的现状。针对这些变化,提出扩大高等继续教育规模、明确高等继续教育发展定位、创新高等继续教育人才培养模式、建立高等继续教育管理体制、实施高等继续教育改革与发展试点项目等五项措施,对于探索天津高等继续教育发展规律,科学制定发展战略和政策,促进高等继续教育持续发展,具有重要的理论和实践指导意义。  相似文献

This article explores the changing dynamics between gender, cultural capital and the state in the context of higher education expansion in contemporary China. With a particular focus on the one-child generation and women’s opportunities and aspirations, I draw upon empirical evidence from a first-hand survey study and in-depth semi-structured interviews with female undergraduates from one-child families in 2007. The findings from the survey study suggest that singleton status might mediate the impact of socioeconomic status and cultural capital on students’ academic performance and elite opportunities. The qualitative interview data provide further evidence on how singleton women’s aspirations are related to their socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The most significant finding is concerned with singleton girls’ strategy of applying for Chinese Communist Party membership as a way to minimize their social and gender disadvantages. I argue that there emerges a bottom-up approach of women empowerment through qualifications and political selection during China’s transition. Political selection is dressed up in seemingly meritocratic selection, thus becoming more appealing to female undergraduates who, in turn, take advantage of party membership to add a silver lining of political loyalty to higher education qualifications.  相似文献

The article analyses some of the problems of academic women in Poland. It begins with an historical survey of the status of educated and professional women in Poland beginning with the end of the eighteenth century and then focusses on the social and political determinants and the differences and similarities of the recruitment patterns and the course of the careers of women and men in the academic world. Women, the author recognizes, are underrepresented in academic and scientific careers in comparison with men; however, the problem stems as much from the perceived role of women in society at large as from blatant sexual discrimination. The situation is slowly improving, but women need to form organizations to further their collective interests.  相似文献
