The Internet has been seen as a resource for reforming education. Researchers and reformers have had some success in developing reform-based innovations using the Internet. However, most teachers who use the Internet are not part of such projects and instead, are developing their own approaches to Internet use. This study explores the experiences of one teacher as she uses the Internet on her own as a tool for changing her practice. Ms. Owens is a high school chemistry teacher who used the Web as part of a unit on nuclear chemistry. Her experience suggests that reform by way of the Internet is complex and challenging; that it makes huge demands on teacher knowledge and time; and that, even with commitment and effort, the results can be distant from the kind of science reform at which the NRC Standards are aimed. 相似文献

This paper presents an on-line server-based examination system for analytical chemistry or any other subject suitable for administration over large geographical areas and for students in distance education to do self-assessment. The analytical chemistry test bank is ready and others may be added by any instructor over the Internet at our server. The advantages are that examinations can be administered to thousands of candidates and the results are known immediately. What is unique about the system is that it combines the course material with the examination system so that the examination system may also be used by students to measure their preparedness. Although on-line examiners are widely used, they are expensive to develop or buy. The main purpose of this paper, therefore, is to share the resource which is very useful in teaching and is fairly difficult for nontechnical educators, not to mention the cost. Material on the World Wide Web may be freely accessed by instructors and students, regardless of its source. Evaluation of such material can be facilitated by use of one of a number of web site evaluation tools. These assess a web site in terms of content and design by adapting established principles in each of these areas. The feasibility of using one such tool, originally developed for the evaluation of medical information sites, in chemistry has been explored. The tool was applied to 37 sites that cover the periodic table. Most of the criteria seemed to be as applicable to chemical sites as to those for which it was designed, and gave useful information on the quality aspects of each site. On the other hand, some of the criteria included for medical sites were inappropriate or too vague in the context of chemical sites, and additional criteria not present in the original tool would have been useful for this application. These observations have been used to construct a modified tool which should be more applicable for World Wide Web sites with chemical content. 相似文献
