Reference service has existed in public and academic libraries for over one hundred years, but as libraries move into an age of increasing technology, many traditional methods for providing reference service will no longer be adequate. By examinmg reference services of the past and present, reference librarians can learn from the mistakes and successes of their predecessors to better plan for the future. Reference librarians must be committed to retaining the most successful ideas from the past and giving up the least successful. This critical examination of past services must also be coupled with a visionary and risk-taking outlook for what is needed in the future if reference librarians are to remain a vital part of the information age.  相似文献

This article examines the relationship between bibliographic instruction and reference services. It provides historical definitions for the two services, reviews selected literature that comments on this relationship, and, in turn, considers questions that librarians might ponder as they look at the relationship between reference and instruction in the age of information literacy. The results of a survey distributed to and completed by libraries in the Southeast provide information about how these libraries are making connections between the two services. Finally, recommendations for improving the teaching of information literacy at the reference desk and in instruction classes are provided.  相似文献

The information age has changed libraries of all types and sizes in ways that no one could have predicted. For a rural library, though, changes have been fast and furious and have made a dramatic impact on the very nature of the library and the services the library offers. Rural libraries went from a gathering place for community activities to fully wired information centers in a matter of a few years. The article addresses what these changes mean for reference services-one of the most basic functions of a public library. While people are consuming more information than ever, will the rural library be able to keep up with this demand even with the Internet? The article explores reference services in rural public libraries, using examples from libraries in central and northern Illinois, giving consideration to the nature of reference services, how they have changed over time, and how this compares to small libraries in a metropolitan setting.  相似文献

Twenty-four public and academic reference librarians were surveyed for the purpose of obtaining information about the services if any, that they currently provide for information brokers, the appropriateness of providing reference services for those who market the information obtained, and whether or not reference departments of public and academic libraries should provide competing fee based reference services. Few public or academic librarians objected to providing reference services for information brokers. Academic reference librarians expressed the view that service should not interfere with services for their primary clientele. Public reference librarians generally held the opinion that their services should be available to all and had already been provided for with public funds. Both public and academic reference librarians expressed concern about qualifications of some commercial suppliers of information as this effected their relationship with them. Public reference librarians were of the opinion that information brokers did not compete with the library and the library should be hesitant about providing fee based reference services. Academic reference librarians were divided in their opinoins about the latter.  相似文献

在高速发展的信息时代,信息的生产、传播发生了巨大的变化。作为信息主要载体之一的图书,其传统地位也受到前所未有的挑战。在校园中,随着学生读书量的减少,由此引发的阅读理解能力的下降以及读者日益脱离图书馆的倾向等诸多问题都显现出来。信息化走在世界前列的日本,这种现象就更加突出。该文以创价大学图书馆开展的全校读书运动Soka BookWave(SBW)为例,介绍了日本大学图书馆应对信息化浪潮冲击的多项举措,希望给我国高校图书馆的发展和功能定位带来一些启示。  相似文献
