Abstract

Today's reference librarians are constantly faced with the challenge of orienting users to the complex, ever changing world of the electronic library. A well-structured library instruction program is one important approach to the overall goal of educating users. But library instruction sessions cannot and do not reach all students. Studies indicate that students are most receptive to learning research techniques at the point of need, which most often occurs at the reference desk. Although many reference librarians are committed to “teaching students to fish,” they are frequently faced with students whose research needs require in-depth lessons that exceed the time available for most reference desk transactions. This paper offers a way to close the gap by providing a set of techniques and strategies, utilizing behaviors and props, which can be used in those short, one-on-one instruction-based situations.  相似文献

An instruction program that covers search tools on the Web should incorporate a user's information need as the basis for teaching these tools. This article lays the theoretical groundwork for such a query-based approach, deriving its argument from the literature published in the early days of databases in libraries. A review of recent literature as well as tutorials on the Web reveals that librarians do not routinely consider a user's query in their training in the use of Web-based search tools. Other training elements are more prevalent, in particular the nature of search tools, search strategies and the evaluation of results found in a search. When training recommends a context for searching the Web, the advice tends to be of a general nature. These results suggest that librarians may not routinely be teaching queries as a strategy for selecting and using search tools on the Web. Suggestions for further research are presented to explore these findings.  相似文献

Some librarians embrace discovery tools while others refuse to use them. This lack of consensus can have consequences for student learning when there is inconsistent use, especially in large-scale instruction programs. The authors surveyed academic librarians whose institutions have a discovery tool and who teach information literacy classes in order to identify barriers to using them and to develop strategies to effectively integrate them into instruction. The authors used the survey results and recent studies on the research habits of undergraduates to propose strategies for integrating the discovery tool at the programmatic level in a more meaningful and sustainable way.  相似文献

The knowledge-systems community is interested in easing the knowledge-system development process. One approach, the mechanisms approach, views knowledge systems as a set of tasks, each of which can be realized by a computation mechanism. To be effective, knowledge-acquisition (KA) tools must be automatically configured once a set of mechanisms has been selected. We present a method for automatically generating a model-based KA tool for a given set of mechanisms. The method advocates combining KA mechanisms, which acquire knowledge in the small, and a set of strategies that provide a global view of the KA activity. We show that these global strategies are necessary for the KA tool to efficiently interact with a domain expert.  相似文献

The delivery of library reference service can be practically supplemented through the appropriate incorporation and use of software tools commonly referred to as expert systems. The level of support such systems can afford the reference service organization is dependent on the degree of complexity characteristic of the rule-based programming techniques used to develop a particular system and the size of its knowledge database. Since most expert systems are designed to simulate the process of problem-solving practiced by an expert in a given field, an expert system designed to fully emulate library reference work must have the potential to respond to a wide subject range of questions with varying degrees of response adequacy. The widespread development of expert systems with this type of potential is limited due to the tremendous personnel and hardware costs currently associated in the design and application of systems of this size. Most locations utilizing some form of reference expert system have applied a compromised, more cost-efficient approach in this area. The following describes a micro-computer-based reference expert-type system that has emerged due to this needed compromise.  相似文献

Embedded librarians serve an important role in assisting remote users. Despite the varying degrees of embeddedness, all maintain the goal of ensuring the same high-quality reference and instruction services that users have come to expect from the traditional library setting. Embedded librarians select and use technology that most effectively meets the needs of this unique user group. This technology can include the library Web site, course management systems, research guides, lecture and screen capture software, remote reference (including telephone, chat, and email), web conferencing, online survey tools, citation management, and social media.  相似文献

Summary

The Internet has brought great changes to reference services in academic libraries. One significant impact has been the growth and evolution of the reference librarian's role as teacher. This article reviews the literature on the librarian's increased teaching role with the emergence of the Internet, discusses the changing student populations who require a librarian's instruction and the skills that students need to achieve information literacy, and reviews how the Internet has affected current teaching strategies including classroom instruction, Web-based instruction, and efforts to integrate information literacy instruction into the curriculum. In addition, it also introduces emerging Internet technologies with their potential impact on teaching and instruction. The authors conclude that the reference librarian's teaching role will further increase with the development of information technologies.  相似文献

A major challenge facing academic libraries is the need for reference librarians to become knowledge experts in their assigned subject areas. The subject-specialist approach increases the effectiveness of collection development, classroom instruction, and faculty liaison interactions. Simultaneously, this approach creates the need for continuous learning opportunities. Conferences organized around academic disciplines provide a direct connection to subject-specific information as well as opportunities for meeting people who share common interests. With the increase in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and research, the authors argue that attending subject-specific conferences is the best way to keep up with information needs in various fields. This article reviews the benefits of attending academic conferences and discusses five strategies for selecting an appropriate subject conference in any discipline. The purpose of this study is to investigate how archivists conduct reference services. The investigators administered two surveys to 19 participants at 15 Canadian academic archives to understand archivists’ behaviour while performing reference. There is no standard approach to reference as many archivists use institution-specific tools coupled with their own knowledge. Finding aids are the most frequently accessed tool and are most often used in conjunction with other tools. Limited resources are the primary barrier to the provision of effective reference services. The tools that are employed by archives are archivist focused, which results in reference services that are not user focused.  相似文献

The European Union (EU) maintains a system of depository libraries in the United States. This study surveyed 55 of the U.S. European Union depositories concerning the scope of their efforts to provide bibliographic instruction for the EU collection. Survey respondents were also asked about other promotional efforts. The study found that librarians responsible for the European Union collections were enthusiastic about the applicability of the materials to a variety of research questions, but that the time available for instruction in their use was limited. In designing an instruction program, respondents indicated that it is important to include information about the structure and function of the EU, as well as information about the use of the major reference tools.  相似文献

In recent years, there have been several attempts to relieve reference desk overload by creating online tools that handle some of the easier reference queries. Some of these tools are or include "expert systems" that simulate the problem-solving skills of an expert. This paper examines the consequences of adopting a simulation perspective rather than an expert systems perspective. Because such a shift in perspective allows a simulation of the entire process, and not merely the role of the expert in it, it becomes possible to create a tool that simulates not just the problem-solving skills of a reference librarian, but the information-seeking behavior of a client as well. The resulting tool could then assist not only at the reference desk, but also in case-oriented training for reference librarianship.  相似文献

This article presents and discusses a class-based approach to more closely tie together reference and instruction services, with the goal of addressing shortcomings of both the traditional reference and instruction models. This project entailed the provision of individual feedback for all students in selected first-year seminar classes and senior seminar classes, in which the librarian was an essential component of the research process. The project's effectiveness was evaluated via surveys of students who received librarian feedback through written comments on annotated bibliographies or reference consultations.  相似文献
