The study surveyed the use of Internet among undergraduate students at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. A total of 1000 questionnaires were distributed using a stratified sampling method to select the respondents. Ten faculties were covered. A total of 664 questionnaires were returned and all were usable. The findings revealed a high percentage use of the Internet. The access point for them is cyber cafes. The university library though linked to the Internet is yet to provide access to students. Respondents pay for the access time through their pocket money for food, books and assistance from friends. Their use of the Internet has not affected their use of the library. Some problems they face in their use of the Internet include slowness of the server and payment for the access time. The study recommends that the university should provide access points for students. The university library also should continue to aim at ensuring that it gets enough funds from the government and sponsors to be able to provide access points in the library for use by students and include the use of Internet in its library instruction course. 相似文献

A previous survey, in 1995, revealed that only 3% of Canada's regional and county library systems provided public Internet access. The present survey showed that 67% of these libraries provided access and that connectivity was proceeding rapidly despite the geographical, technical, and financial difficulties faced by systems with large geographical areas and numerous members from different municipal or county jurisdictions. Library directors indicated that using the World Wide Web as a reference tool was the most useful staff application of the Internet and that this function was most appreciated in small branches located far from adequate reference collections. Funding for initial connectivity set-up costs came mainly from federal and provincial grants and from existing library budgets. Directors expected library budgets to be the primary funding source for ongoing Internet costs, a potentially difficult situation because of continuing fiscal shortfalls and increasing technical expenses. The Internet has ameliorated some of the long-distance communications problems unique to county and regional systems, but many difficulties remain. 相似文献

The Internet brings the best and the worst into depository libraries in terms of Web sites and patron behavior. Acceptable Use Policies were created to help deal with the problems associated with Internet access, but have not stopped the abuse of library resources or staff. As members of larger communities, depository libraries have various options for dealing with unacceptable user behavior. This article looks at some of the problems that depositories are dealing with and the laws that effect them. Some problems may be better solved through nonlibrary agencies and offices.
