大学是学术交流中的一支活跃力量,随着开放获取影响的日益扩大,大学图书馆与开放获取的关系更加紧密。国外大学图书馆在推动开放获取发展,应对学术交流变革的进程中,在大学校园内创新性地采取了一系列举措。这些成功举措包括图书馆员积极推动校园开放获取政策出台,并为政策的顺利推行提供不可替代的服务;图书馆摈弃信息看门人的信息交流末端角色,直接参与到学术出版环节;图书馆员重视加强自我教育;图书馆有很好的组织性,图书馆联盟机制为图书馆高效运作和开辟未来发展空间发挥了巨大作用;大学图书馆面对学术交流体系的巨大变革,也清醒地认识到大学图书馆未来发展战略需要做出重要调整。  相似文献

Globally library consortia activities are gaining momentum and Africa is not an exception. The Information and Communication Technology (ICTs) dispensation has ushered in a transformative era characterised by the open access initiatives (OAI). Technologies development has added a new dimension to how academic libraries manage scholarly content. This article seeks to explore how academic libraries are progressing in their open access initiatives in Zimbabwe. This article also examines the extent to which open access has been adopted in Zimbabwe's higher education institutions (HEIs). The article seeks to find out how academic libraries can benefit from open access initiatives. The article also analyses the roles of stakeholders in strengthening the open access initiatives among academic libraries in Zimbabwe. The purpose of this study was to identify the challenges students faced in accessing the information from academic libraries during COVID and factors that contributed to stress among students during the pandemic. Another purpose of the study was to know the expectations of the students regarding libraries' services and library professionals' competencies in the post-COVID era. A quantitative research approach and survey method was employed to conduct this study. The population of the study was students of public and private sector universities in Pakistan. Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the collected data. Results revealed that lack of digital resources (limited access to the internet and digital devices such as smartphones) and limited information skills found the highest mean score (3.92 and 3.90 respectively) regarding contributing to stress among the students. Similarly, findings confirmed that lack of access to printed material and printers, scanners, recorders, and websites with limited guidelines were the major challenges students faced while accessing the information from academic libraries during the period of a pandemic. Students agreed and expected remote access to information sources, availability of more electronic content, presence of online tutorials regarding the use of information sources and access to institutional repositories from libraries after the COVID era. Respondents also agreed that post-COVID librarians should be good information managers, communicators, problem solvers and internet librarians. The study also shares the implications for practitioners and polisymakers and future research directions for academics and researchers.  相似文献

1995年以来,海南省普通高校图书馆在省教育厅的领导下,在省高校图书情报工作委员会的直接指导和部署下,完成了图书馆的自动化建设和网络化建设。具体包括基本网络环境和网络资源建设、数字图书馆建设、重点学科导航建设,并开始着手进行以馆际互借和网上在线数据库服务为基本特征的网络信息服务。对海南省普通高校图书馆网络化数字化建设提出了基本构想。  相似文献

In the past, undergraduate libraries have tried to provide unlimited services to secondary users. Increased technological change, severe budget cuts, and lack of human resources are forcing libraries to examine their mission and audience and to determine what level of service they can offer unaffiliated users. The addition of low-quality vendor records to the bibliographic utilities (OCLC and RLIN) has had a significant impact on cataloging and access in academic libraries. Vendor records are brief, non-standard bibliographic records created by booksellers and loaded into the utilities. Because many libraries are choosing to copy these records from the utilities to their local online catalogs without editing or enhancing them, much effort is being duplicated, as individual libraries make the same enhancements locally. Less original cataloging is being conducted in the languages represented by the vendor records, and more upgrading of lower-quality records is now necessary, a change that has affected cataloging workflows, and ultimately access, in academic libraries. America has become a choice for international students to study abroad because of its advanced education system and environment. Libraries become a way for international students to access resources and experience campus life, while Chinese students are increasing gradually as the biggest component of international students. This article investigates how Chinese students use American academic libraries and their information needs and seeking behaviors, as well as Chinese students' satisfaction with library facilities, resources, and services, and their expectation for other services. Information centers are increasingly being confronted with the challenges of shifting information environments. The development of a digital information society has dictated that libraries devise strategies to capture, describe, and provide access to these digital documents in addition to physical formats. This is nowhere more apparent than in the field of government information. With a public access mandate and a distribution model that has forever been destabilized by the development of low barrier Web publishing technologies, libraries providing access to government information face more challenges than ever. This article looks at the possibility of using topic modeling to increase access to the growing number of poorly described digital texts distributed to libraries and archives. The article provides a basic overview of what topic modeling is and its potential applications in libraries, describes some popular tools and potential workflows, and illustrates how the author tested a potential workflow.  相似文献

Continual changes in information technologies over the past three decades have wrought substantial changes in library services and in information-seeking behavior among the general public. Thus the necessity for libraries to utilize the internet to communicate with stakeholders is even more important for academic libraries, as the rate of internet usage among those with college degrees continues to outpace that of the general population. The online availability of a well-crafted mission statement is therefore crucial. This analysis of the web sites of 113 ARL academic libraries—an update of Kuchi's (2006) study—considers the inclusion (availability) and placement (accessibility) of mission statements on library web sites and provides insights into the academic library's use of such statements for communicating mission and purpose to different stakeholders.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Budget constraints in academic libraries have led them to seek alternative means of providing patrons with articles without subscribing to every journal requested. In order to determine how academic libraries were doing this for business articles, a study was conducted of selected academic libraries at universities offering MBA degrees. The results of the study indicate that academic libraries use a combination of ways to obtain business articles that are not held in their collections. In addition to traditional interlibrary loan, libraries are providing access to full text databases, subscribing to electronic journals and using commercial document delivery services. This article examines the influence that technology and, especially the Internet, has had on the ability to offer patrons quicker, and often better, access than ever before. In spite of tight budgets, academic libraries are finding innovative ways to fund these services in order to provide timely service to their business faculty and students.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

About twenty years ago, the Internet began to change the way people create, access, publish, and share information. The impact of this information revolution has been felt in every industry. For instance, the Internet has enabled new models in the publishing sector, which has subsequently impacted education and changed the landscape of teaching and learning. About a decade ago, the introduction of new buzzwords such as open access, electronic publishing, digital humanities, and digital scholarship continued to challenge the scholarly production and dissemination of knowledge. Undoubtedly, these changes also created new opportunities for collaboration among multidisciplinary groups including researchers, scholars, students, technologists, librarians, and others. In this article, the author discusses four successful faculty-driven digital scholarship projects that his library system has supported in the last two years. His team's work serves as an example of how academic libraries and centers for digital scholarship at undergraduate institutions can support digital humanities and digital scholarship initiatives. Additionally, the case examples can contribute to the ongoing discussion of new roles for librarians and technologists in working with scholars and students to gain the skills necessary to implement digital scholarship projects.  相似文献

Electronic access to information is transforming both the vision of future libraries and the way in which librarians today deliver information services. In reference service, especially in academic libraries, the wide availability of electronic access to periodical indexes and full-text periodical databases has raised speculation about the possibility of relying on purely electronic reference collections. A field test indicates that this is not yet a viable option and points to the continued vital role of the reference librarian as guide, interpreter, and integrator of print and electronic information sources. In the tradition exemplified by Charles Bunge's “Potential and Reality at the Reference Desk: Reflections on a ‘Return to the Field,’” this article rests on field experience and testing, and is written in part in the first person.  相似文献

As libraries continue to grow and change in the 21st century, we are seeing an increased emphasis on outreach, engagement, creativity, and innovation for academic libraries. These ideas are crucial to the future of academic libraries and makerspaces are one way for academic libraries to realize these ideas. Makerspaces can be affordable, don't need to take up a lot of space, and have potential to be catalysts for creating partnerships within one's community. Electronic information resources, such as CD-ROM bibliographic databases, are transforming significantly the way academic researchers find information and the way in which librarians assist academic researchers. CD-ROM and other electronic information resources in academic libraries bring new demands from end-users for services from librarians.
