It is widely acknowledged that men and women are different from each other in their individuality, value image and status, which lead to the variations in their language styles and language uses. This thesis will mainly discuss the speech differences between men and women, differences between linguistic representations of men and women, and possible explanations on language differences related to gender.By analyzing these differences,we found that the different roles men and women play as well as the different status they enjoy are the main reasons of these differences.Language and social reality are closely connected.Language not only reflects reality but also helps to construct reality. The roles women play in the society as well as their social status foredoom their discriminated "famine" language.  相似文献

In this study, the authors analyzed data from a nationally representative survey of youth to study happiness amongst Canadian adolescents aged 12-17. Testing for differences in the level of happiness between female and male adolescents was conducted. Following this, multivariate analysis was employed to determine which factors were associated with adolescent happiness. The authors determined that the level of happiness appeared to vary between the genders, as the males reported a higher level of happiness than the females. However, the difference between the genders in terms of reported happiness was modest. The authors detected some gender differences in regards to determinants of happiness. The study's theoretical and practical implications are also considered.  相似文献

Based on a case study, this paper explores the reason of the formation of the gender role and various negative stereotypes imposed on females by the patriarchal society, and attempts to analyze the painful experiences, physically and mentally, that females have to undergo both at home and out at work and to reveal the harmful influences that have been exerted upon the development of society by the prescribed gender role and negative stereotypes which virtually make females suffer throughout history. This paper also reveals a big irony:while various biases imposed by society victimize females, they also victimize society itself. Therefore, the paper argues that the only way out is to establish a new cycle which will undermine the structural basis for traditional views of male and female roles.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to compare the obedient/disobedient behavior in secondary + 1 level students. Objectives of the study were: (1) to study and compare the obedience/disobedience in secondary + 1 level students on gender basis; (2) to study and compare the obedient/disobedient behavior in secondary + 1 level students in relation to their stream (arts/science); and (3) to study the interactional effect of gender and stream on the obedient/disobedient behavior in secondary + 1 level school students. ODTS (obedient-disobedient tendency scale) by Mehta and Hasnain was used for the present study. The results reveal that males are disobedient in their behavior, whereas, females show the mixed behavior, i.e., both obedience and disobedience; arts students are disobedient, i.e., both boys and girls in comparison to science stream students; gender and stream have a significant interactional effect on the obedient/disobedient behavior of secondary + 1 level students.  相似文献

Sex and gender have been confusingly categorised by many scholars.Sex refers to biological characteristics;gender, can also be influenced by biology but does not determined by it.Unlike sex, which is determined by nature at birth, gender is a social construct specifying the culturally prescribed roles that men and women are to follow and represent. In order to argue that gender attaches to culture and that gender identity is shaped socially and culturally, this essay analyses Jane Campion’s The Piano from three perspectives.Firstly, the essay will examine the way people in the film represent their gender characters through three repeatedly demonstrated narrative motifs, clothing, the axe and the piano,to illustrate that gender is performative and that cultural gender identities advocate specific performances in terms of behaviour,speech,views,etc.(Butler,2011).Then,through an analysis of the different gazes of the characters in the film, the essay indicates that social and cultural interaction between the genders can go beyond and blur the boundaries of the stereotypical categories of male and female. In the third section, the essay will argue that social rules and discourse also play a prominent role in shaping people’s gender,by discussing how the characters represent and re-define their gender identity under the pressure of the patriarchal society they inhabit.  相似文献

Gender difference is a popular research topic for many disciplines. It has also aroused the interest of an increasing number of linguists. This article attempts to explore one of the aspects of gender difference in language, that is, discourse styles of male and female in speech communication and adopts two approaches —the dominance approach and the difference approach, proposed by some researchers to explain different discourse styles of men and women and show its socio-cultural reasons in order to enhance people’s understanding of the relationship between language and gender.  相似文献

The study was to investigate the vague words measurement across native and non-native English speakers and gender differences. Ninety-two students from the University of Oklahoma participated in this study by filling out an internet-based questionnaire on the vague words. The researchers put each of the thirty-two vague words in a context, or the same word put into different contexts. The participants were asked to rate the degree or the numerical value that they thought was the most appropriate in the context of the vague word. It was found that ten out of the thirty-two words had a significant difference across the native and non-native English speakers, and two of thirty-two words had a significant difference across genders. The word "fairly" showed the most significant difference interactions of language speaking by gender.  相似文献

This study compares the life events perceived as "rites of passage" from adolescence to adulthood by respondents between the ages of 14 and 23 in 3 countries and discusses the possible influences of culture and globalization on these perceptions. Participants include: (1) 250 adolescents from the US (125 males and 125 females); (2) 191 adolescents from southeastern Brazil (70 males and 121 females); and (3) 163 adolescents from Malaysia (76 males and 87 females). These adolescents ranked a variety of life events which may be perceived as indicative of adult status by completing a questionnaire about perceived rites of passage. Although there were similarities among the 3 groups, several differences also emerged. The most commonly noted indicator of adult status for Malaysian youth was physical maturity, followed by completing one's education. Participants from the US cited financial independence as the major indicator of adult status, while those from Brazil cited the ability to make important decisions independently from family and to take responsibility for others, such as children, aging parents or a spouse. Brazilian youth were significantly more likely to cite a love affair and voting in major elections as rites of passage than were participants from the other 2 countries. Participants from the US were significantly more likely to cite military service, and Malaysian youth were significantly more likely to consider completion of education and achieving physical maturity as rites of passage. Gender and age differences within groups were evident on some items, but these were not consistent across groups. Possible explanations for the differences between countries and implications for educators working with adolescents in rapidly changing societies are discussed.  相似文献

The aims of the study were to census and compare the technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK) of secondary science teachers and their most used information and communication technology (ICT) in two contexts, Taiwan and Shaanxi Province in China. A questionnaire was employed to examine secondary school science teachers' most used ICT and their TPACK in science teaching. Eight hundred and six secondary science teachers from Taiwan and 164 teachers from Shaanxi participated in the study. The analytical results showed that multimedia was the most used ICT in Taiwan, followed by PowerPoint (PPT), Internet platforms, and interactive whiteboards (IWBs). In Shaanxi, PPT was the most used ICT reported by science teachers, followed by multimedia, IWBs, and Intemet platforms. The findings indicated that in Taiwan, science teachers' TPACK was statistically significant in relation to different types of ICT, whereas in Shaanxi, science teachers' TPACK did not demonstrate significant difference. In Taiwan, science teachers who reported their most used ICT to be multimedia were found to show significant differences in TPACK according to gender and teaching experience. In Shaanxi, science teachers who reported their most used ICT to be PPT did not show any significant difference on TPACK by gender; however, they showed significant differences on TPACK in regard to teaching experience. The research implications of this study are provided below along with suggestions for future research.  相似文献

When classrooms are not gender responsive, boys and girls seating in the same classroom and learning from the same teacher receive very different education. Each and every textbook and all learning materials tell a story about people; how they relate to one another and to the environment within which they live. The present study is a desk research conducted to establish the extent of gender responsiveness of selected primary school English textbooks in Zimbabwe. Using the ABC of Gender Analysis framework, the study made quantitative and qualitative analyses of two selected series of primary school English textbooks, which are Step in New Primary English (Grade 1 to 7) and Ventures English Alive! (Grade 1 to 7 Pupil's Book). Components of the ABC of Gender Analysis were used to make a critical analysis of the textbooks. Despite the fact that a number of measures have been put in place to address issues of gender inequality in all sectors, findings from the study revealed that the selected primary school English textbooks continue to perpetuate gender discrimination and bias. This impacts negatively on the education of girl children and it is detrimental to equal educational attainment for boys and girls. Girls tend to be affected and lag behind, others fail to excel and even drop out. The study recommends the promotion of zero tolerance to gender biases and stereotypes in all learning and teaching environments. The study also recommends that school textbooks be exposed to the rigour of gender analysis before they are recommended for use in any educational activity.  相似文献
