In recent years, eBook collections have been increasing at a slow but steady rate in both public and academic libraries. With the increasing eBook collections in libraries and the advancements made in information discovering services, users can now discover materials existing outside of their local library more easily. EBooks also offer the potential for quick interlibrary loan delivery. Ironically, eBook interlibrary loan has not become prevalent in libraries. Many studies have been done to explore eBook licensing and interlibrary loan in academic libraries and to offer practical solutions for eBook interlibrary lending. Few studies have been done in public libraries. This study explores the current practice of eBook interlibrary loan activities in American public libraries. Survey questionnaires were distributed to 118 randomly selected public libraries. Questions focused on current eBook interlibrary loan best practices, issues, and obstacles in American public libraries. Findings from this study indicate eBook ILL is not a priority for the surveyed public libraries, and the adoption rate of eBook ILL in public libraries is much lower than that in academic libraries. 相似文献

The evaluation of productivity of main services of city libraries using the example of 48 large public libraries and 44 small public libraries from the Czech and the Slovak Republic was performed according to the decomposition of the input-oriented Malmquist index (MI). The results of MI achieved are evaluated using a confidence interval and the bootstrap method. The productivity of main services of public libraries was studied for the year 2016 in comparison with the year 2012. On average, small as well as large libraries exhibit a statistically significant decline in productivity. The average value of the MI of small libraries is 1.29. The average value of the MI of large libraries is 1.16. The deterioration of productivity was caused by lower efficiency of the inputs. The small as well as the large libraries on average exhibit a comparable level of productivity in both studied years. This conclusion is the same for the Czech and for the Slovak libraries as well as for all libraries together. The Czech libraries, when compared with the Slovak ones, achieve better results in terms of productivity. The higher productivity of the Czech libraries in comparison with the Slovak ones is caused by the improvement of efficiency of the inputs, not by the technological changes. 相似文献

This study examines the cost-effectiveness of consolidated county libraries in large metropolitan areas of the Midwest and compares it with the cost-effectiveness of large city libraries which share service to the county with other large public library systems in the area. The hypothesis that consolidated county library systems serve a large metropolitan area more economically than two or more large public libraries within a county is tested. The survey method is used to collect population, budget, and circulation statistics from 19 libraries in Midwestern cities of 100,000 or more. The data are analyzed for cost-effectiveness using a one tailed T-test to compare the means of county versus noncounty. The results of this study demonstrate a significant difference between the Cost per Item Circulated and the Per Capita Circulation from county to non-county libraries. It costs the county libraries less to circulate one item and they also circulate more items for each person in the population they serve. These results have implications for future decisions of libraries considering merger of several libraries into a consolidated system. 相似文献

The outlook for special libraries is neither the previously forecast Baby Boomer retirement crisis nor the dire end of special libraries many feared during the recent recession. Instead, the special library world is transforming, creating both challenges and opportunities for special librarians. Millennials entering both the workforce at large and the library workforce will make their presence known. Savvy information professionals will stay on top of these trends and find their niche, whether in a traditional physical library or in emerging careers outside the library.Column Editor’s NoteSpecial libraries share concerns with their more general academic, public, and school counterparts, but they also have unique characteristics and concerns which merit separate consideration. Libraries of all types are evolving, and just as special libraries can learn from the general literature on libraries, practitioners in all types of libraries can learn from the experiences and best practices of special libraries. “The Specialist,” appearing in even-numbered issues of this journal, addresses the administrative concerns of special libraries. 乡村图书馆是乡村文化的重要组成部分。文章回顾乡村图书馆的历史,讨论乡村图书馆参与乡村文化振兴的理论依据、发展中存在的问题、重新复活的方式、目前的实践经验等,总结出乡村图书馆发展中的两种原动主体及其优劣之处,揭示出乡村图书馆在乡村文化振兴中的地位,提出了乡村图书馆自身健康发展、服务能力提升的可行方案。认为乡村图书馆具有保存乡村记忆、传播人类知识、培养地方认同感的功能,是实施社会教育的第二课堂、交换信息意见的公共空间、从事休闲娱乐的文化场所。其外部效应也很大,如扶助村民致富、成为美丽乡村文化标志等。乡村图书馆的建设应提倡“自下而上”的内生方式,其可持续发展的四种有效途径是:(1)政府分级投资、整合多方资源创办乡村图书馆;(2)政府通过购买乡村图书馆服务的方式促进乡村文化发展;(3)鼓励新乡贤或社会力量创办乡村图书馆,支持乡村文化建设;(4)图书馆专业力量介入乡村图书馆业务活动,提供专业指导及各种资源。 相似文献
