International Service-Learning (ISL) is a pedagogical activity that seeks to blend student learning with community engagement overseas and the development of a more just society. ISL programmes have grown as educational institutions and non-governmental organizations have sought to achieve the goal of developing ‘global citizens’. However, Service Learning (SL) in general and International Service-Learning (ISL) in particular remain deeply under-theorized. These educational initiatives provide policy-makers with a practical response to their quest for a ‘Big Society’ and present alluring pedagogical approaches for Universities as they react to reforms in Higher Education and seek to enhance both the student learning experience and graduate employability. After outlining the development of ISL in policy and practice, this paper draws on the rich tradition of ISL at one British university to argue that ISL is a form of engagement that has the potential to be ethical in character, although a number of factors are identified that militate against this. The contention is that ISL which promotes rational and instrumental learning represents a deficit model and, therefore, ISL is conceptualized here as a transformative learning experience that evinces distinctly aesthetic and even spiritual dimensions. Upon this theoretical groundwork is laid the foundations for conceptualizing ISL in ways that ensure its ethical integrity. 相似文献

Learning about foreign language (FL) cultures is becoming an important objective in the FL curricula and national standards of different countries throughout the world. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of the cultural portfolio project on: (1) students' concept development in their perceptions of the target language culture and their own; (2) students' evaluation of stereotypes towards English‐speaking cultures; and (3) students' self‐awareness and perception of EFL (English as a foreign language) and cultural learning process. Data were collected from students' cultural portfolio projects, classroom observation, and interviews. Results indicate that through the cultural portfolio project, students engaged in active learning, gained insight into specific aspects of the target language cultures and became more aware of the diversity within these cultures, and developed their ability to think critically instead of automatically accepting cultural information. 相似文献

In this paper we use Transformative Learning Theory as a lens for making sense of teachers’ learning from study visits to the Global South. Transformative Learning theory is made up of two main elements: the form of transformations and the processes that support transformations. ‘Life changing’ experiences as expressed by study visit participants have been interpreted as transformational, but questions about who and what are transformed, and whether this is at the expense of the ‘Other’, are rarely addressed. Drawing on data from a project investigating study visits for UK teachers to Gambia and Southern India, we analyse the form that changes take and discuss whether these can be seen as transformational. We argue that without an explicit focus on relational forms of knowledge about culture and identity, self and other, the potential for transformations in how we relate to, and learn from, each other in postcolonial contexts is severely diminished. 相似文献

新冠肺炎疫情导致的国际冲突昭示着跨文化交流的重要性,历史教育对此应有所作为。历史教育的功能一直在与时俱进,内涵不断丰富,从以史为鉴到国家认同,再到国际理解。在信息时代,全球化和文化多样性并存,历史教育应再度进行调整。跨文化知识是跨文化交流的基础,历史教育应建构出整体的世界史叙事、均衡的世界史框架,形成合理、深刻的跨文化知识体系。跨文化交流与历史教育在认识论和方法论层面存在高度的一致,它们都致力研究面对和处理差异的智慧,跨文化交流与历史思维都是后天养成的,跨文化交流与历史思维均须克服自我中心主义。历史教育所着力培养的理解能力,正是跨文化交流所亟需的共情能力。历史教育要想不被时代淘汰,只能直面挑战,调整自我。 相似文献

It aims to overcome language/communication problems between prison staff and foreign inmates at European prisons via online language teaching programs for the staff. This paper discusses the rationale and application of the project with an eye to the related literature and theoretical background. ＂萨丕尔-沃尔夫假说＂包括两个基本观点,即语言决定论和语言相对论。其中语言决定论,也就是语言决定思维,由于其过分强调了语言对思维的决定作用,已经渐渐地淡出了语言学家的研究视野,主要是由于其决定作用过于强势。语言相对论即语言反映思维、信念、态度等。跨文化交际学是一门新兴的学科,语言与思维的关系,以及语言与文化的关系一直以来都是跨文化交际学中不可回避的问题,提及语言与思维,与文化的关系,就离不开对萨丕尔-沃尔夫假说的讨论。作者从该假说的语言相对论角度入手,把该假说放入跨文化交际当中,让读者可以更好地体会为什么在交际过程中,语言不同的人,在思维方式和文化形态上的表现也有所不同,希望从此角度给能给读者以启发,以便更好地进行交际。 相似文献
