The quality of interlibrary loan services was investigated from the dyadic perspective of the library and the library customer. The study paired the use of a valid, reliable measuring instrument, SERVQUAL, with an unobtrusive approach related to 130 contrived interlibrary loan transactions in 38 large public libraries in Canada. Library measures of quality produced a fill rate of 52% and a turnaround time of 38 days. Customer expectations of quality proved higher than their perceptions of the quality of services they had received. Reliability, the dimension of quality ranked most important by customers for evaluating service quality, scored lowest in performance. Overall attitudes about the public library were higher than levels of satisfaction with interlibrary loan services. The study found a mismatch between library measures of interlibrary loan performance, based on fill rate and turnaround time, and customer measures of quality, based on disconfirmation theory.  相似文献

In recent years, eBook collections have been increasing at a slow but steady rate in both public and academic libraries. With the increasing eBook collections in libraries and the advancements made in information discovering services, users can now discover materials existing outside of their local library more easily. EBooks also offer the potential for quick interlibrary loan delivery. Ironically, eBook interlibrary loan has not become prevalent in libraries. Many studies have been done to explore eBook licensing and interlibrary loan in academic libraries and to offer practical solutions for eBook interlibrary lending. Few studies have been done in public libraries. This study explores the current practice of eBook interlibrary loan activities in American public libraries. Survey questionnaires were distributed to 118 randomly selected public libraries. Questions focused on current eBook interlibrary loan best practices, issues, and obstacles in American public libraries. Findings from this study indicate eBook ILL is not a priority for the surveyed public libraries, and the adoption rate of eBook ILL in public libraries is much lower than that in academic libraries.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to outline the “best common practices” at Regent University Library, and share survey data illustrating their effectiveness. Also discussed is how transitioning from an entirely graduate university to a university serving both graduates and undergraduates has influenced library services. The new constituency will increase interlibrary loan transactions and test the library's practices. Providing quality interlibrary loan service to a growing academic population requires innovative ideas and practices while keeping the workflow streamlined. New programs implemented over the past several years include books on demand and providing more electronic books and journals. A growing distance education student population has led to paying for library cards for academic libraries located near students' homes and permitting them to return materials to satellite campuses.  相似文献

通过网络调查的方法对我国跨系统图书馆联盟建设的现状进行分析发现,高校图书馆跨系统合作意识不强、跨系统图书馆联盟分布地域较窄、城市基层公共图书馆尚未加人联盟、共享合作停留在表面、馆际互借联盟服务程序繁琐、区域发展不平衡、缺乏深层次服务。针对存在的这些问题,可以采取以下措施:充分发挥高校馆的资源优势和服务特色、扩展跨系统图书馆联盟网、建立联盟馆际互借服务系统、提高对跨系统图书馆联盟的重视、扩展联盟的服务项目。  相似文献

馆际互借补贴是图书馆帮助读者获得非本馆收藏文献的重要的支持手段,许多国家推出了政府投入的馆际互借支持项目,而图书馆也有自己的馆际互借补贴计划。在充分利用国家投入的馆际互借项目的基础上,建立起图书馆自己的馆际互借政策,有利于全面保障读者使用文献资源。以清华大学图书馆馆际互借补贴政策的完善过程为例,诠释这一思想,希望对其他图书馆有一定的借鉴意义。

Current fiscal shortfalls are projected to bring deep and long-lasting budget cuts to libraries. With every budget dollar under close scrutiny, the urgency of filling patron information needs efficiently and cost-effectively increases. Interlibrary loan plays an important role in filling in gaps in library collections, yet as significant budget cuts are made at libraries of all sizes, materials will be available from fewer and fewer lenders. Libraries unable to find items from those with whom they have reciprocal arrangements will be will be forced to use lenders who charge. Cooperation among libraries in the Pacific Northwest is of long standing and is an example of regional cooperation among public libraries and other libraries through interlibrary loan, union catalogs, union lists, cooperative cataloging, and telecommunications networks between two countries and over a large and sparsely populated region. Networking has resulted in increased services to library users and in increased efficiencies in library operations. The traditional library organization for over forty years has been divided into technical services and public services. The age of automation, however, is bringing these two areas much closer together, and in some large academic libraries, the technical services librarian and the public services librarian are the same person. The work done in serials acquisitions and collection development is now available online in many libraries. Several libraries also have automated serials control and cataloging capabilities. With the advent of online access to serials, reference, interlibrary loan and library instruction services have simplified the work demands for the reference librarian. This conclusion suggests that cooperation between technical services and public services is the logical solution to provide the best possible service to the library patron.  相似文献

This study investigates the methods by which faculty obtain scholarly articles, books, and chapters. It focuses on full-text retrieval rather than discovery, drawing on a survey of 529 full-time faculty at U.S. colleges and universities in the Carnegie master's—large and master's—medium categories. When seeking articles, faculty rely mainly on their home-institution library collections, freely accessible online resources, and interlibrary loan. The situation is different for books, however; faculty most often purchase the books they need. Despite the continuing importance of formal access mechanisms (home-institution library collections and interlibrary loan), faculty rely on other sources of full text—informal access mechanisms—for 50% of the articles and 66% of the books they use. Nearly 25% get more articles from the open web than from any other source, and substantial minorities report heavy reliance on other sources. In particular, faculty sometimes use other libraries, often relying on current or past affiliations (e.g., part-time teaching) or on the user accounts of family, friends, and colleagues. Many are critical of their university library collections, but most are satisfied with freely accessible online resources and interlibrary loan.  相似文献

An overabundance of duplicate journals without an efficient and economical method of distribution caused one library's staff to reassess traditional methods of dispersal. A simplified form for listing duplicates was devised. In conjunction with the Regional Medical Library Program and the extension program, lists of duplicates were distributed to hospital and clinical libraries. These libraries selected materials to strengthen their ability to fill information needs at the local level and to conserve RMLP support for esoteric and expensive materials. In a two-year period, 86,000 individual pieces were distributed. Some lessening of interlibrary loan requests from heavy users was documented. In an evaluation survey users expressed satisfaction with the program. The successful use of the duplicate program will lead to a further experiment--the library will attempt to fill interlibrary loan requests for common journals with hard copy rather than photocopy in a cost and time reduction effort.  相似文献

民国时期,中国现代图书馆事业的推动者们广泛宣传馆际互借的意义,通过图书馆协会制订馆际互借办法,推动开展馆际互借;经过图书馆员的努力,民国政府在图书馆法规中,确定了馆际互借作为图书馆工作职责的内容;从图书馆界学者的批评、图书馆借阅统计等方面可以看出,民国时期的馆际互借总体规模处于较低水平;民国时期图书馆界开展馆际互借的基本特点主要有:谨慎选择服务对象;局限于本地区;图书馆协会对开展馆际互借有一定程度的推动;抗战爆发使整个图书馆事业陷入低谷,馆际互借因此失去开展的基础,直至新中国成立,民国时期的馆际互借再也没有出现新的高潮。  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The evolution of statewide resource sharing and reciprocal borrowing for Maryland public libraries is discussed. Beginning in the 1950s, the Enoch Pratt Free Library assumed responsibility for filling interlibrary loan requests for the state due to the size of its collection. In 1971, Pratt became the State Library Resource Center and its interlibrary loan responsibilities became formalized. Through a series of technological advancements in library catalogs and interlibrary loan systems, Maryland has arrived at the MARINA system to facilitate sharing resources throughout the state. The state has a long-standing philosophy of cooperation, which makes the MARINA endeavor possible.  相似文献

Ariel files are the starting point for electronic delivery of interlibrary loan articles through ILLiad, Virginia Tech's interlibrary loan system. Despite some advantages to electronic delivery of articles to their desktops, a large majority of ILL customers continue to prefer print on paper delivery rather than electronic delivery. This fact has implications for introducing additional electronic services. Correctly choosing what services to impose on library customers, and what services to offer as value-added options, is fundamental to maintaining the credibility of libraries during these times of rapid change.  相似文献
