A tremendous amount has been written about the library as a learning space and about this model's two most popular outgrowths, the information commons and the learning commons. Little to nothing, however, has been written about how reshaping an academic/research library and repurposing library space affects the library as a collection, its resources, and its collections-related services. ABSTRACT

Based on William Birdsall's research on the Communicative Commons (2010), this research moves toward reworking the commons model by integrating classical definitions of the commons with theories of psychological ownership, the Information/Learning Commons, and engaged learning and citizenship behaviors. This research seeks to enable institutions without the financial resources for physical renovations projects to create an environment in their libraries capable of training students to become citizen-scholars by providing the goal of increasing student ownership over library resources. It argues that prioritizing student participation within the library may be the best preparation for participation in the wider cultural commons post-graduation.  相似文献

Abstract

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging’s Strategic Directions document for 2018-2021 mark the first explicit mention of diversity and inclusion in PCC strategic planning, but the organization has a significant record of supporting diversity, inclusion and collaboration within the library cataloging community throughout its 25?year history. This paper will outline what the PCC has done to be more diverse and inclusive in its work and collaborations, and offer recommendations on where PCC should go next to even further support diversity, equity, and inclusion with collaboration in the future.  相似文献

Summary

Migrating from one automated system to another has become a common experience in libraries. Such a migration is as great a change for serials staff as implementing the library's first automated system. It involves conversion or re-entry of data, alterations in workflow, changes in system “philosophy,” and a lot of relearning. Much of the success of the process depends on staff training. This workshop offered practical ideas and suggestions for training serials staff to deal with a new system and the transition process. The emphasis was on practical steps to help with the migration process from initial planning through implementation and on to daily operations under the new system.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

At the University of Connecticut, Learning Commons were created at each of the five regional campuses as was reported in the Journal of Library Administration (Dryden & Roseman, 2010). This article will discuss the further evolution of the commons at each campus, based on a variety of assessment methods that were undertaken. These included technology surveys, online space assessment surveys, focus groups, marketing surveys, and virtual focus groups. This article shares assessment models which may be useful for the evaluation of learning commons at other academic libraries.  相似文献

Abstract

A new library in San José opened on August 1, 2003. This library is the result of a unique collaboration between San José State University Library and the San José Public Library. The planning for this new library highlighted merging several key areas of operation, including Government Publications. Several years before the two libraries merged, the University Library merged government publications reference functions into the general reference service of the Reference department. Depository library status at the federal and state levels impacted the planning and implementation stages. This paper discusses the background, planning, and implementation of merging the reference service for government publications, first within an academic environment and then in the unique joint library environment.  相似文献

Abstract

Measuring website success is critical not only to the web development process but also to demonstrate the value of library services to the institution. This article documents one library's approach to the measurement of website success. LibQUAL+(tm) results and strategic-planning documents indicated a need for a new type of measurement. The current literature on e-metrics focuses predominantly on vendor-based network statistics and reporting standards and other collaborative projects by various academic libraries around the world, such as the International Organization for Standardization, National Information Standards, Project COUNTER, and the Association of Research Libraries. There is no evidence within the body of library literature of academic libraries incorporating the use of e-metrics to measure the success of the library website in relation to library strategic planning and marketing. The purpose of this research paper is to consider how academic libraries can use web-conversion rates as a managerial tool for measuring a website's success and provides an outline for further research into a more strategic application of e-metrics as it relates to library strategic planning and marketing.  相似文献

Abstract

The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library, as a county government agency, is required to follow a specific budget planning process in order to obtain funding for library programs and services. One tool of this planning process-the “decision unit”-requires advanced planning and continued evaluation of potential and existing library services. Prior to receiving funds for any new service, performance measures must be established in order to measure the success of the service in relation to the public money invested. This article will look at the evaluation process built into the funding of the library's participation in a statewide virtual reference service and the implications for continuation and/or expansion of this service based on continued assessment.  相似文献

Summary

The promising future of new and better information services supported by the use of information technologies is well documented. Many journal articles describe successful experiences with better reference and instructional services, new services to new kinds of students who are engaged in distant independent learning or other non-traditional education, and better communication with library users. However, there are many perils on the way to delivering such improvements with the use of new finding tools, new software, new printing systems, and new telecommunication networks. An administrative overview of the sorts of planning which can smooth the implementation of information technology-based reference and instructional services outlines options for staffing, troubleshooting, fund raising, and budget development. Planning takes time and effort, collaboration and creativity. With appropriate emphasis on planning, the promise of implementing improvements in quality of services through information technologies can and should become a reality.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper talks about Desa Informasi (Information Village), an initiative to document local information resources at Petra Christian University through the implementation of an institutional repository (IR) system. The author argues that IRs have potential and an important role in the effort to preserve and disseminate indigenous knowledge. The author also describes the relationship between institutional repositories and digital libraries, that both are interchangeable terms. As evidenced in current literature, few libraries are able to provide the time and resources needed to fully orient and train their staff. This article proposes that the metaphors with which people imagine the Internet are more central to its political constitution than might at first be supposed. Instead of focusing on discourses of whether the Internet is a progressive force, a capitalist or anticapitalist space, digital commons or artifact of controlled interests, this article shows that metaphors of social relations themselves frame the politicization of the Internet. The way social actors are conceptualized in turn informs the senses in which a technology could be considered an object of political constitution, and the senses in which policy is a relevant mode of social engagement. An ethnographic account of uses of the Internet in St. Petersburg, Russia is presented with a view to framing Western metaphors of sociality.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The culture and structure of each organization are unique. A successful fee-based service will take into account the critical features of its own organization, understanding that strong internal support will be vital for long-term success. Whether the business environment is local, regional, or global, an information provider must understand the overall needs of that environment and be able to satisfy them. Providing services for which costs are not fully recoverable may attract business but be unsustainable in the long run; finding and developing the right niche will build a solid base and lead to long-term success. This paper addresses these issues and identifies strategies for success in both internal and external environments. Since neither environment is static, the issues should be re-examined frequently; since neither environment exists totally independent of the other, it will be beneficial to take advantage of the situations where they overlap or exert influence on each other.  相似文献

In planning for a new library construction project for the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa, graduate students enrolled in the University of Oklahoma (OU) School of Library and Information Studies collaborated in an innovative effort to develop a commons-based reference service. By first considering a philosophical approach to the need for a commons, blending in the experiences of other libraries that have created similar spaces, and focusing on the workflow issues likely to be encountered by the graduate assistants staffing the commons itself, this planning team developed an uncommon peer-to-peer approach to reference and education services, one focused on the patron as student.  相似文献
