In planning for a new library construction project for the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa, graduate students enrolled in the University of Oklahoma (OU) School of Library and Information Studies collaborated in an innovative effort to develop a commons-based reference service. By first considering a philosophical approach to the need for a commons, blending in the experiences of other libraries that have created similar spaces, and focusing on the workflow issues likely to be encountered by the graduate assistants staffing the commons itself, this planning team developed an uncommon peer-to-peer approach to reference and education services, one focused on the patron as student. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Of the steps in implementing an Information Commons, one of the most important is the planning phase. For the planning and implementation to be a success, buy-in and support from library users and administrators is essential. The result of the planning process is a detailed planning document that will influence the success of the commons. The document should include plans for policy changes, space for the commons, staffing issues, and assessments, both before and after implementation. Even with all the planning completed, an evaluation of the viability of and desirability for a commons should determine whether a commons should be implemented on each individual campus. 相似文献

[目的/意义] 针对当前我国图书馆面临的不确定性复杂环境, 引入情景规划理论, 建立嵌入情景的大学图书馆战略规划实施模型, 旨在丰富图书馆战略规划理论, 并在实践层面上为我国大学图书馆及其他类型图书馆战略规划提供借鉴。[方法/过程] 运用系统研究方法, 融合战略规划与情景规划理论, 突出情景规划的系统学习、应急性与反馈性等特性, 构建大学图书馆情景规划模型, 以香港理工大学图书馆为例阐释说明其实现过程与实施效果。[结果/结论] 结果显示, 作为面向复杂多变的不确定性环境的战略规划方法, 大学图书馆情景规划有助于形成面向未来导向与公共导向的未来情景, 培养与形成图书馆共享心智模式, 在成本预算、建筑修复、员工技能等方面, 为图书馆制定面向未来的战略规划研究与实践提供有益参考。 相似文献

Learning Commons in Academic Libraries: Discussing Themes in the Literature from 2001 to the Present
Although the term lacks a standard definition, learning commons represent academic library spaces that provide computer and library resources as well as a range of academic services that support learners and learning. Learning commons have been equated to a laboratory for creating knowledge and staffed with librarians that serve as facilitators of learning. Many of these spaces evolved over time with the addition of campus partners and services. In this article, the authors examined the literature on academic library learning commons to identify common themes. A qualitiative analysis of 103 articles identified five themes including: planning the learning commons, assessing the learning commons, benefiting from the learning commons, collaborating in the learning commons, and staffing the learning commons. Foremost, the review pointed to the increasing popularity of learning commons in academic institutions. To that end, it remains critical that librarians possess the capabilities necessary to support students, faculty, and staff in these next generation learning spaces. Some of these capabilities include traditional library skills, but librarians' computer literacy, including familiarity with web 2.0 technologies, and their knowledge of instructional design remains important too. 相似文献

A seismic retrofitting project required the UCSB Library (University of California, Santa Barbara) to permanently reduce its on-site collections by 120,000 volumes. To accomplish this successfully, a strong collaboration with the faculty was essential. This article describes a planning process in which the library worked with a faculty committee to implement a campus-wide survey of faculty and graduate students regarding their behaviors and preferences in accessing and using the collections.
