Measuring effectiveness of information retrieval (IR) systems is essential for research and development and for monitoring search quality in dynamic environments. In this study, we employ new methods for automatic ranking of retrieval systems. In these methods, we merge the retrieval results of multiple systems using various data fusion algorithms, use the top-ranked documents in the merged result as the “(pseudo) relevant documents,” and employ these documents to evaluate and rank the systems. Experiments using Text REtrieval Conference (TREC) data provide statistically significant strong correlations with human-based assessments of the same systems. We hypothesize that the selection of systems that would return documents different from the majority could eliminate the ordinary systems from data fusion and provide better discrimination among the documents and systems. This could improve the effectiveness of automatic ranking. Based on this intuition, we introduce a new method for the selection of systems to be used for data fusion. For this purpose, we use the bias concept that measures the deviation of a system from the norm or majority and employ the systems with higher bias in the data fusion process. This approach provides even higher correlations with the human-based results. We demonstrate that our approach outperforms the previously proposed automatic ranking methods.  相似文献

The retrieval effectiveness of the underlying document search component of an expert search engine can have an important impact on the effectiveness of the generated expert search results. In this large-scale study, we perform novel experiments in the context of the document search and expert search tasks of the TREC Enterprise track, to measure the influence that the performance of the document ranking has on the ranking of candidate experts. In particular, our experiments show that while the expert search system performance is related to the relevance of the retrieved documents, surprisingly, it is not always the case that increasing document search effectiveness causes an increase in expert search performance. Moreover, we simulate document rankings designed with expert search performance in mind and, through a failure analysis, show why even a perfect document ranking may not result in a perfect ranking of candidate experts.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new machine learning method for constructing ranking models in document retrieval. The method, which is referred to as SSRank, aims to use the advantages of both the traditional Information Retrieval (IR) methods and the supervised learning methods for IR proposed recently. The advantages include the use of limited amount of labeled data and rich model representation. To do so, the method adopts a semi-supervised learning framework in ranking model construction. Specifically, given a small number of labeled documents with respect to some queries, the method effectively labels the unlabeled documents for the queries. It then uses all the labeled data to train a machine learning model (in our case, Neural Network). In the data labeling, the method also makes use of a traditional IR model (in our case, BM25). A stopping criterion based on machine learning theory is given for the data labeling process. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets and one web search dataset indicate that SSRank consistently and almost always significantly outperforms the baseline methods (unsupervised and supervised learning methods), given the same amount of labeled data. This is because SSRank can effectively leverage the use of unlabeled data in learning.  相似文献

The importance of query performance prediction has been widely acknowledged in the literature, especially for query expansion, refinement, and interpolating different retrieval approaches. This paper proposes a novel semantics-based query performance prediction approach based on estimating semantic similarities between queries and documents. We introduce three post-retrieval predictors, namely (1) semantic distinction, (2) semantic query drift, and (3) semantic cohesion based on (1) the semantic similarity of a query to the top-ranked documents compared to the whole collection, (2) the estimation of non-query related aspects of the retrieved documents using semantic measures, and (3) the semantic cohesion of the retrieved documents. We assume that queries and documents are modeled as sets of entities from a knowledge graph, e.g., DBPedia concepts, instead of bags of words. With this assumption, semantic similarities between two texts are measured based on the relatedness between entities, which are learned from the contextual information represented in the knowledge graph. We empirically illustrate these predictors’ effectiveness, especially when term-based measures fail to quantify query performance prediction hypotheses correctly. We report our findings on the proposed predictors’ performance and their interpolation on three standard collections, namely ClueWeb09-B, ClueWeb12-B, and Robust04. We show that the proposed predictors are effective across different datasets in terms of Pearson and Kendall correlation coefficients between the predicted performance and the average precision measured by relevance judgments.  相似文献

To cope with ambiguous and/or underspecified queries, search result diversification (SRD) is a key technique that has attracted a lot of attention. This paper focuses on implicit SRD, where the subtopics underlying a query are unknown. Many existing methods appeal to the greedy strategy for generating diversified results. A common practice is using a heuristic criterion for making the locally optimal choice at each round. As a result, it is difficult to know whether the failures are caused by the optimization criterion or the setting of parameters. Different from previous studies, we formulate implicit SRD as a process of selecting and ranking k exemplar documents through integer linear programming (ILP). The key idea is that: for a specific query, we expect to maximize the overall relevance of the k exemplar documents. Meanwhile, we wish to maximize the representativeness of the selected exemplar documents with respect to the non-selected documents. Intuitively, if the selected exemplar documents concisely represent the entire set of documents, the novelty and diversity will naturally arise. Moreover, we propose two approaches ILP4ID (Integer Linear Programming for Implicit SRD) and AP4ID (Affinity Propagation for Implicit SRD) for solving the proposed formulation of implicit SRD. In particular, ILP4ID appeals to the strategy of bound-and-branch and is able to obtain the optimal solution. AP4ID being an approximate method transforms the target problem as a maximum-a-posteriori inference problem, and the message passing algorithm is adopted to find the solution. Furthermore, we investigate the differences and connections between the proposed models and prior models by casting them as different variants of the cluster-based paradigm for implicit SRD. To validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approaches, we conduct a series of experiments on four benchmark TREC diversity collections. The experimental results demonstrate that: (1) The proposed methods, especially ILP4ID, can achieve substantially improved performance over the state-of-the-art unsupervised methods for implicit SRD. (2) The initial runs, the number of input documents, query types, the ways of computing document similarity, the pre-defined cluster number and the optimization algorithm significantly affect the performance of diversification models. Careful examinations of these factors are highly recommended in the development of implicit SRD methods. Based on the in-depth study of different types of methods for implicit SRD, we provide additional insight into the cluster-based paradigm for implicit SRD. In particular, how the methods relying on greedy strategies impact the performance of implicit SRD, and how a particular diversification model should be fine-tuned.  相似文献

Pseudo-relevance feedback (PRF) is a well-known method for addressing the mismatch between query intention and query representation. Most current PRF methods consider relevance matching only from the perspective of terms used to sort feedback documents, thus possibly leading to a semantic gap between query representation and document representation. In this work, a PRF framework that combines relevance matching and semantic matching is proposed to improve the quality of feedback documents. Specifically, in the first round of retrieval, we propose a reranking mechanism in which the information of the exact terms and the semantic similarity between the query and document representations are calculated by bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT); this mechanism reduces the text semantic gap by using the semantic information and improves the quality of feedback documents. Then, our proposed PRF framework is constructed to process the results of the first round of retrieval by using probability-based PRF methods and language-model-based PRF methods. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on four Text Retrieval Conference (TREC) datasets. The results show that the proposed models outperform the robust baseline models in terms of the mean average precision (MAP) and precision P at position 10 (P@10), and the results also highlight that using the combined relevance matching and semantic matching method is more effective than using relevance matching or semantic matching alone in terms of improving the quality of feedback documents.  相似文献

Word sense ambiguity has been identified as a cause of poor precision in information retrieval (IR) systems. Word sense disambiguation and discrimination methods have been defined to help systems choose which documents should be retrieved in relation to an ambiguous query. However, the only approaches that show a genuine benefit for word sense discrimination or disambiguation in IR are generally supervised ones. In this paper we propose a new unsupervised method that uses word sense discrimination in IR. The method we develop is based on spectral clustering and reorders an initially retrieved document list by boosting documents that are semantically similar to the target query. For several TREC ad hoc collections we show that our method is useful in the case of queries which contain ambiguous terms. We are interested in improving the level of precision after 5, 10 and 30 retrieved documents (P@5, P@10, P@30) respectively. We show that precision can be improved by 8% above current state-of-the-art baselines. We also focus on poor performing queries.  相似文献

In this paper we propose and evaluate the Block Max WAND with Candidate Selection and Preserving Top-K Results algorithm, or BMW-CSP. It is an extension of BMW-CS, a method previously proposed by us. Although very efficient, BMW-CS does not guarantee preserving the top-k results for a given query. Algorithms that do not preserve the top results may reduce the quality of ranking results in search systems. BMW-CSP extends BMW-CS to ensure that the top-k results will have their rankings preserved. In the experiments we performed for computing the top-10 results, the final average time required for processing queries with BMW-CSP was lesser than the ones required by the baselines adopted. For instance, when computing top-10 results, the average time achieved by MBMW, the best multi-tier baseline we found in the literature, was 36.29 ms per query, while the average time achieved by BMW-CSP was 19.64 ms per query. The price paid by BMW-CSP is an extra memory required to store partial scores of documents. As we show in the experiments, this price is not prohibitive and, in cases where it is acceptable, BMW-CSP may constitute an excellent alternative query processing method.  相似文献

Document similarity search (i.e. query by example) aims to retrieve a ranked list of documents similar to a query document in a text corpus or on the Web. Most existing approaches to similarity search first compute the pairwise similarity score between each document and the query using a retrieval function or similarity measure (e.g. Cosine), and then rank the documents by the similarity scores. In this paper, we propose a novel retrieval approach based on manifold-ranking of document blocks (i.e. a block of coherent text about a subtopic) to re-rank a small set of documents initially retrieved by some existing retrieval function. The proposed approach can make full use of the intrinsic global manifold structure of the document blocks by propagating the ranking scores between the blocks on a weighted graph. First, the TextTiling algorithm and the VIPS algorithm are respectively employed to segment text documents and web pages into blocks. Then, each block is assigned with a ranking score by the manifold-ranking algorithm. Lastly, a document gets its final ranking score by fusing the scores of its blocks. Experimental results on the TDT data and the ODP data demonstrate that the proposed approach can significantly improve the retrieval performances over baseline approaches. Document block is validated to be a better unit than the whole document in the manifold-ranking process.  相似文献

In this paper, a new robust relevance model is proposed that can be applied to both pseudo and true relevance feedback in the language-modeling framework for document retrieval. There are at least three main differences between our new relevance model and other relevance models. The proposed model brings back the original query into the relevance model by treating it as a short, special document, in addition to a number of top-ranked documents returned from the first round retrieval for pseudo feedback, or a number of relevant documents for true relevance feedback. Second, instead of using a uniform prior as in the original relevance model proposed by Lavrenko and Croft, documents are assigned with different priors according to their lengths (in terms) and ranks in the first round retrieval. Third, the probability of a term in the relevance model is further adjusted by its probability in a background language model. In both pseudo and true relevance cases, we have compared the performance of our model to that of the two baselines: the original relevance model and a linear combination model. Our experimental results show that the proposed new model outperforms both of the two baselines in terms of mean average precision.  相似文献

In the whole world, the internet is exercised by millions of people every day for information retrieval. Even for a small to smaller task like fixing a fan, to cook food or even to iron clothes persons opt to search the web. To fulfill the information needs of people, there are billions of web pages, each having a different degree of relevance to the topic of interest (TOI), scattered throughout the web but this huge size makes manual information retrieval impossible. The page ranking algorithm is an integral part of search engines as it arranges web pages associated with a queried TOI in order of their relevance level. It, therefore, plays an important role in regulating the search quality and user experience for information retrieval. PageRank, HITS, and SALSA are well-known page ranking algorithm based on link structure analysis of a seed set, but ranking given by them has not yet been efficient. In this paper, we propose a variant of SALSA to give sNorm(p) for the efficient ranking of web pages. Our approach relies on a p-Norm from Vector Norm family in a novel way for the ranking of web pages as Vector Norms can reduce the impact of low authority weight in hub weight calculation in an efficient way. Our study, then compares the rankings given by PageRank, HITS, SALSA, and sNorm(p) to the same pages in the same query. The effectiveness of the proposed approach over state of the art methods has been shown using performance measurement technique, Mean Reciprocal Rank (MRR), Precision, Mean Average Precision (MAP), Discounted Cumulative Gain (DCG) and Normalized DCG (NDCG). The experimentation is performed on a dataset acquired after pre-processing of the results collected from initial few pages retrieved for a query by the Google search engine. Based on the type and amount of in-hand domain expertise 30 queries are designed. The extensive evaluation and result analysis are performed using MRR, [email protected], MAP, DCG, and NDCG as the performance measuring statistical metrics. Furthermore, results are statistically verified using a significance test. Findings show that our approach outperforms state of the art methods by attaining 0.8666 as MRR value, 0.7957 as MAP value. Thus contributing to the improvement in the ranking of web pages more efficiently as compared to its counterparts.  相似文献

The increasing volume of textual information on any topic requires its compression to allow humans to digest it. This implies detecting the most important information and condensing it. These challenges have led to new developments in the area of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Retrieval (IR) such as narrative summarization and evaluation methodologies for narrative extraction. Despite some progress over recent years with several solutions for information extraction and text summarization, the problems of generating consistent narrative summaries and evaluating them are still unresolved. With regard to evaluation, manual assessment is expensive, subjective and not applicable in real time or to large collections. Moreover, it does not provide re-usable benchmarks. Nevertheless, commonly used metrics for summary evaluation still imply substantial human effort since they require a comparison of candidate summaries with a set of reference summaries. The contributions of this paper are three-fold. First, we provide a comprehensive overview of existing metrics for summary evaluation. We discuss several limitations of existing frameworks for summary evaluation. Second, we introduce an automatic framework for the evaluation of metrics that does not require any human annotation. Finally, we evaluate the existing assessment metrics on a Wikipedia data set and a collection of scientific articles using this framework. Our findings show that the majority of existing metrics based on vocabulary overlap are not suitable for assessment based on comparison with a full text and we discuss this outcome.  相似文献

We generated networks of journal relationships from citation and download data, and determined journal impact rankings from these networks using a set of social network centrality metrics. The resulting journal impact rankings were compared to the ISI IF. Results indicate that, although social network metrics and ISI IF rankings deviate moderately for citation-based journal networks, they differ considerably for journal networks derived from download data. We believe the results represent a unique aspect of general journal impact that is not captured by the ISI IF. These results furthermore raise questions regarding the validity of the ISI IF as the sole assessment of journal impact, and suggest the possibility of devising impact metrics based on usage information in general.  相似文献

We propose an approach to the retrieval of entities that have a specific relationship with the entity given in a query. Our research goal is to investigate whether related entity finding problem can be addressed by combining a measure of relatedness of candidate answer entities to the query, and likelihood that the candidate answer entity belongs to the target entity category specified in the query. An initial list of candidate entities, extracted from top ranked documents retrieved for the query, is refined using a number of statistical and linguistic methods. The proposed method extracts the category of the target entity from the query, identifies instances of this category as seed entities, and computes similarity between candidate and seed entities. The evaluation was conducted on the Related Entity Finding task of the Entity Track of TREC 2010, as well as the QA list questions from TREC 2005 and 2006. Evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed methods are effective in finding related entities.  相似文献

Expert finding addresses the task of retrieving and ranking talented people on the subject of user query. It is a practical issue in the Community Question Answering networks. Recruiters looking for knowledgeable people for their job positions are the most important clients of expert finding systems. In addition to employee expertise, the cost of hiring new staff is another significant concern for organizations. An efficient solution to cope with this concern is to hire T-shaped experts that are cost-effective. In this study, we have proposed a new deep model for T-shaped experts finding based on Convolutional Neural Networks. The proposed model tries to match queries and users by extracting local and position-invariant features from their corresponding documents. In other words, it detects users’ shape of expertise by learning patterns from documents of users and queries simultaneously. The proposed model contains two parallel CNN’s that extract latent vectors of users and queries based on their corresponding documents and join them together in the last layer to match queries with users. Experiments on a large subset of Stack Overflow documents indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method against baselines in terms of NDCG, MRR, and ERR evaluation metrics.  相似文献

Learning-to-Rank (LtR) techniques leverage machine learning algorithms and large amounts of training data to induce high-quality ranking functions. Given a set of documents and a user query, these functions are able to precisely predict a score for each of the documents, in turn exploited to effectively rank them. Although the scoring efficiency of LtR models is critical in several applications – e.g., it directly impacts on response time and throughput of Web query processing – it has received relatively little attention so far.The goal of this work is to experimentally investigate the scoring efficiency of LtR models along with their ranking quality. Specifically, we show that machine-learned ranking models exhibit a quality versus efficiency trade-off. For example, each family of LtR algorithms has tuning parameters that can influence both effectiveness and efficiency, where higher ranking quality is generally obtained with more complex and expensive models. Moreover, LtR algorithms that learn complex models, such as those based on forests of regression trees, are generally more expensive and more effective than other algorithms that induce simpler models like linear combination of features.We extensively analyze the quality versus efficiency trade-off of a wide spectrum of state-of-the-art LtR, and we propose a sound methodology to devise the most effective ranker given a time budget. To guarantee reproducibility, we used publicly available datasets and we contribute an open source C++ framework providing optimized, multi-threaded implementations of the most effective tree-based learners: Gradient Boosted Regression Trees (GBRT), Lambda-Mart (λ-MART), and the first public-domain implementation of Oblivious Lambda-Mart (Ωλ-MART), an algorithm that induces forests of oblivious regression trees.We investigate how the different training parameters impact on the quality versus efficiency trade-off, and provide a thorough comparison of several algorithms in the quality-cost space. The experiments conducted show that there is not an overall best algorithm, but the optimal choice depends on the time budget.  相似文献

The semantic web not only contains resources but also includes the heterogeneous relationships among them, which is sharply distinguished from the current web. As the growth of the semantic web, specialized search techniques are of significance. In this paper, we present RSS—a framework for enabling ranked semantic search on the semantic web. In this framework, the heterogeneity of relationships is fully exploited to determine the global importance of resources. In addition, the search results can be greatly expanded with entities most semantically related to the query, thus able to provide users with properly ordered semantic search results by combining global ranking values and the relevance between the resources and the query. The proposed semantic search model which supports inference is very different from traditional keyword-based search methods. Moreover, RSS also distinguishes from many current methods of accessing the semantic web data in that it applies novel ranking strategies to prevent returning search results in disorder. The experimental results show that the framework is feasible and can produce better ordering of semantic search results than directly applying the standard PageRank algorithm on the semantic web.  相似文献

In current IR approaches documents are retrieved only according to the terms specified in the query. The same answers are returned for the same query whatever the user and the search goal are. In reality, many other contextual factors strongly influence document’s relevance and they should be taken into account in IR operations. This paper proposes a method, based on language modeling, to integrate several contextual factors so that document ranking will be adapted to the specific query contexts. We will consider three contextual factors in this paper: the topic domain of the query, the characteristics of the document collection, as well as context words within the query. Each contextual factor is used to generate a new query language model to specify some aspect of the information need. All these query models are then combined together to produce a more complete model for the underlying information need. Our experiments on TREC collections show that each contextual factor can positively influence the IR effectiveness and the combined model results in the highest effectiveness. This study shows that it is both beneficial and feasible to integrate more contextual factors in the current IR practice.  相似文献

Listwise learning to rank models, which optimize the ranking of a document list, are among the most widely adopted algorithms for finding and ranking relevant documents to user information needs. In this paper, we propose ListMAP, a new listwise learning to rank model with prior distribution that encodes the informativeness of training data and assigns different weights to training instances. The main intuition behind ListMAP is that documents in the training dataset do not have the same impact on training a ranking function. ListMAP formalizes the listwise loss function as a maximum a posteriori estimation problem in which the scoring function must be estimated such that the log probability of the predicted ranked list is maximized given a prior distribution on the labeled data. We provide a model for approximating the prior distribution parameters from a set of observation data. We implement the proposed learning to rank model using neural networks. We theoretically discuss and analyze the characteristics of the introduced model and empirically illustrate its performance on a number of benchmark datasets; namely MQ2007 and MQ2008 of the Letor 4.0 benchmark, Set 1 and Set 2 of the Yahoo! learning to rank challenge data set, and Microsoft 30k and Microsoft 10K datasets. We show that the proposed models are effective across different datasets in terms of information retrieval evaluation metrics NDCG and MRR at positions 1, 3, 5, 10, and 20.  相似文献

In this paper, we describe a model of information retrieval system that is based on a document re-ranking method using document clusters. In the first step, we retrieve documents based on the inverted-file method. Next, we analyze the retrieved documents using document clusters, and re-rank them. In this step, we use static clusters and dynamic cluster view. Consequently, we can produce clusters that are tailored to characteristics of the query. We focus on the merits of the inverted-file method and cluster analysis. In other words, we retrieve documents based on the inverted-file method and analyze all terms in document based on the cluster analysis. By these two steps, we can get the retrieved results which are made by the consideration of the context of all terms in a document as well as query terms. We will show that our method achieves significant improvements over the method based on similarity search ranking alone.  相似文献
