This study reports on a nationwide unobtrusive evaluation of government documents reference service at public and academic depository libraries in Canada. Fifteen questions dealing with subject matter from both the legislative and executive branches of government were asked 488 times at 104 depository libraries in 30 census metropolitan areas. Overall, depository library staff members provided complete answers to questions 29.3% of the time. When complete and partially complete answers are counted together, the success rate climbs to 42.4%. Academic full depositories achieved the highest rate of success, followed by public full depositories. In-person questions were answered more successfully than phone questions. Print materials were by far the largest single source used (45.7%) to answer questions. When print alone was used, complete answers to the test questions were found only 39.9% of the time. When World Wide Web sources alone were used, the complete answer rate was 60.7%. To improve service, extensive and periodic staff training may be needed about the structures and functions of both the legislative and executive branches of government. Staff members need to know what programs are available and who is responsible for which program in the federal government.  相似文献

Government publications in serial form provide timely, authoritative information on a range of subjects but reference librarians are not always aware of what is available in these sources. In libraries with separate documents departments, reference staffs may abrogate all responsibility for government publications, relying upon commercial sources to fill information needs more appropriately met with government periodicals. Documents librarians and reference librarians can facilitate the incorporation of govemment information in serial form into the general reference process. Benefits will include improved service to library patrons and an expanded user base to support the continued publication and distribution of government periodicals.  相似文献

Abstract

World Wide Web technology has reached the highest levels of U.S. government. Many changes are taking place at the federal level of government. Every cabinet level agency has a homepage and subordinate agencies are making gains in this new technology on a daily basis. This article highlights the web sites of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. Well known government publications which are found in any traditional government documents reference collection are noted and recommended for both bookmarking and local web site development. This article examines the written comments of proxies participating in an unobtrusive nationwide study of government documents reference service in Canada. Proxies submitted overviews about the quality of reference service they received. On the whole, proxies were disappointed in how they were treated by depository library staff. For example, reference personnel were criticized for providing numerous unmonitored referrals, telling users that the questions were too difficult, and for not being sufficiently knowledgeable about government documents. Some aspects of reference service, such as use of multiple sources and collaboration among staff, received positive comments. Proxies also made a number of salient recommendations for improving government documents reference service in Canada. If depository libraries are to survive as vital links in the transmission of government information to the public, the knowledge level and service ethic of staff needs significant improvement.  相似文献

In recent years, academic reference librarians often find themselves working in closer proximity to computer workstations, labs, and information commons. They are spending a greater portion of their time assisting library users with the vast array of software and hardware used to access library resources. This study examines whether an increased demand for technological knowledge and proficiency is reflected in job expectations for academic reference librarians. Researchers compared randomly chosen academic reference librarian job advertisements from 1999 to those from 2011, examining both job responsibilities and candidate qualifications. Results were mixed, with some variables gaining prominence but others declining. There was no apparent increase in demand for technological skills and responsibilities overall.  相似文献

Prior investigations have indicated that government documents are a relatively underutilized resource by most librarians. Almost invariably, these studies have been of academic libraries and librarians. It is highly probable that scholars use documents unobtrusively and may be overlooked in many surveys, but it must be assumed that they are assisted in their use by knowledgeable documents librarians. A survey of documents use by public reference librarians serving 25 geographically dispersed population centers revealed that there was substantial awareness and use of U.S. government documents. Respondents indicated that they believed accredited programs in library education should provide reference librarians with the backgrounds necessary to assist with reference questions which concern current, but historical issues. Privatization or the commercialization of federal information sources is discussed as the possible consequence of the lack of knowledge and use of documents which can be used for reference purposes, as opposed to those which provide technical information. A Current Issues Seminar for programs of library education is proposed. Using current issues of the day as examples, the content of a typical seminar is reviewed.  相似文献

Digital publishing can make timely distribution and widespread accessibility of state government information possible if these online documents can be captured and archived before they are removed from agency Web sites.
